First time I slow pitched, I used my Trevala Rod with my Avet 5.3 vertical jig set up. Just dropped for the hell of it in 1000 ft of water offshore and got slammed by a blackfin tuna. Crushed wahoo and dorado last season. And I only use JYG jigs. Spoke to Jorge on KZbin, dude is super cool people.

This is interesting. I've been doing this style of fishing since the late 90s. But we called it flutter jigs. The 2 that I used were the Crippled Herring and the Anchovey Dart. Another lure we used was the diamond jig. Those have been around since the 80s (at least as far as I know, may have been even earlier than that) We certainly didn't have access to the fast reels and rods that are available today, so it's definitely been refined into its own killer style.

Is there any advantage being able to hold position with a spot lock trolling motor if the current isn't rippin too much in under 300 ft? Or maybe using it as a drift anchor to slow the drift? @Fish_Bluewater
@fishbluewater
@fishbluewater Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Love where your heads at! A trolling motor would work great and both Mercury and Yamaha offer similar functionality as well. Could be a big advantage especially when you are over a location where you are marking fish good and getting bites
@acojo
@acojo 2 жыл бұрын
Does spj work from an anchored boat? Any adjustments to tackle have to be made to compensate for a non drifting boat?
@fishbluewater
@fishbluewater 2 жыл бұрын
Would need to be very little to no current from an anchored boat. Vertical presentation is key. If the current is running hard and you are anchored the jig will not fish effectively

Thanks for this. May have missed it, but how many grams per foot or yard of depth as your general rule? ...Heard 1g per meter and 1g per foot. Big difference. Appreciate your expertise.
@fishbluewater
@fishbluewater Жыл бұрын
Yes that is definitely a big difference. The general rule of thumb is 1g per foot of water. But wind and current definitely factor in also
@bringit3164
@bringit3164 Жыл бұрын
@@fishbluewater This technique was made the Japanese yes? If they use 1g per meter you just can't have the same formula for foot. That makes no sense and doesn't conform to reality. Please make this make sense.... Now if your telling me we use thicker line that's a hold different story. Thanks in advance.
@sharaguchi1
@sharaguchi1 Жыл бұрын
@@bringit3164 I agree with you. What I've heard from others who have adopted the slow pitching technique from Japan is, 1g per 3ft for easy conversion, but if the current is ripping, go heavier in weight. 1 g per ft is way too heavy. 80g jig in 80ft would sink too quickly without fluttering much.

Won’t you get a lot of break offs with hooks at the front because the fish will have the leader in the mouth ? Especially toothy fish. What is your suggestion for leader length and weight to enable proper fluttering action? Do you sell a set at a discount price? Thank you for the video. It helped explain a great deal.
@fishbluewater
@fishbluewater Жыл бұрын
Double hook set rig works fine. Toothy fish can cut it off regardless of hook placement. 50 lb fluorocarbon leader is best all around for deep jigging. Weight of jig is entirely based on how deep you are fishing.
@jimdrechsel3611
@jimdrechsel3611 Жыл бұрын
@@fishbluewater thanks for the reply. I plan to fish between 75-100’. Would 50 pound still be your choice. Enjoyed the seminar very much. I could use some help choosing which of your jigs to start with. There’s too many to choose from starting out. I plan to target grouper and snapper but of course anything else that bites. If I see a school of bait being cut apart on the surface which jigs would you use and why? Thank you.

@@jimdrechsel3611 Im still learning spj as well. Tried floro 40lb and 50lb works really well for leader. 5 to 10 ft. Then depending on depth, current and structures. I start with their deep jyg then depending on current ill switch type of jyg or weight. I go with lightest weight i can stay vertical. I always use their Deep for slow to med current and Stryke for fast current or very deep water. I rarely used their wyld for no to slow current since there is always moving current when i tried their jygs and my line scopes out. The beauty of spj is u can fish which ever water column you want to fish. Just jig middle to higher column if thats the case. I did bottom jig for groupers and med column for ARS and AJs. Which worked out well. Its so fun that i just bought my first spj set up. 😊

If you need to turn a big fish’s head to get it off the bottom you’re not going to do it with the reel. The rod is critical for that. Once it’s up a ways off the bottom you can let the reel do the rest of the work

Some things I disagree with is you can use a spin reel no worries. You don’t need an overhead reel. The other thing is I use cheap jigs which are $5 each compared to brand name jigs which are $15-20 each. I get the same amount of fish as a brand name jig and they do the same thing. The design is all marketing. Don’t let them fool you.
