INFORMATION about this video | INFORMATION sur cette vidéo ### English / Français.
For several years Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE, with their friend Michel DJOMO GUISS, have installed large mirrors,(+/- 244X122cm) in the rain forest of Nyonié in GABON (West coast of Africa) close to the equator line, in order to film wild animal reactions in view of their reflexion. In front of each mirror digital infrared trap cameras are triggered by any movement of animals monitored by a sensitive infrared motion sensor and then automatically capture pictures or record video clips according to preset settings.
A group of Chimpanzees, from this forest, spend numerous hours in front of these intruders. In the serenity of the jungle, they observe their reflexion.
The behavior of some of these primates would even suggest that they recognize themselves in their reflection.
However, to be more formal, the cameras have not yet recorded the repeated use of mirrors to look at parts of their bodies that they cannot see without their help, e.g.. interior of mouth or rump.
When one of the congeners less advanced in its learning in the mirror, begins to shout out of fear, anxiety replaces serenity and the self reflexion becomes an unknown invader.
He then chases away the invader by "tap-dancing" or dances of intimidation. To impress its opponent with his height and corpulence, these dance steps are performed in a bipedal position with often bristly hair, with very powerful smacks and loud slaps with cupped hand on the ground. To feel stronger, nothing is better than a tree branch in hand, but the opponent (the reflection) instantly responds to these attitudes with identical behaviors!. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror.
The properties of the mirror are very difficult to understand by these chimpanzees who, unlike humans, did not learn mirror practice as children with their mother as a teacher able to talk.
While humans and gorillas are mostly right-handed, without anyone knowing why, orangutans are more clearly left-handed, "chimpanzees are ambidextrous, with the possibility of favouring one hand or another for certain tasks" (Marie-Claude Bomsel, professor at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris)
-------------------------------------------

Haha not that he knows it's his own reflection, same as when tribe's who've existed without the rest of the world and never known anything else being contacted and shown mirrors, lighters and such. They all posses self awareness it's ignorance to assume otherwise, but the concept of a mirror to both is alien at first, something unknown and never thought about before then. Maybe they've seen it in water sources possibly, maybe not. But imagine having never seen a mirror before and walking across one in the jungle that blends in with the tree's then you see another male chimp you don't recognize and eventually he copies your action's so you become curious instead of a territorial warning display. :)

If you do not wear shoes like many pygmies your soles of your feet become hard as horn. If you are a quadruped, your hands will be also covered with horn. And finally if, when you smack on the ground with cupped hands (open hands) or with your feet flat and slap on sandy ground then you won't hurt yourself. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because silverback gorillas as alpha chimpanzees who are slapping the ground, want to show their power and thus scare the invader of their domain (their own image) and push him to escape. We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our trap cameras, some facing huge mirrors set up in a remote area of the Gabonese virgin forest and collect their memory card. Then we do the editing with for each one a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on.._* Keep watching the other videos on my channel kzbin.infovideos Please read the description attached to each of my videos you will know very interesting informations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle ! Having been attacked after a withdrawal/emotional outburst. But once you lose respect for these creatures, anything and everything can happen. In the description attached to my video, I explain this very particular behaviour in silverback gorillas. Click on the "show more" option, I attach a description with more explanations to each of my 150 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos
