Water will never work on an optical sensor. The light being cast on your finger is warped to such a drastically different extent that if it did unlock I'd be worried.

I don't think that is an optical sensor because it works with the screen open( and the screen produce light) I think the fingerprint scanner is Capacitive scanners but either way it doesn't change anything unless it's a ultrasonic scanner.

Since it's an optical sensor, that won't make a difference. If there's cracks in the way of of the sensor seeing your finger, it won't matter if it's the phone's screen itself or a screen protector

One more plot Twist: Do some Googling about optical fingerprint reader and capacitor based fingerprint reader. Capacitors are not disturbed by dust. They can make it work. Dust however can disturb the image of a finger.

There's a difference between throwing a phone into a blender for the sake of it and scratching the screen to see how much wear would the fingerprint reader withstand. This video might come in handy if you were actually interested in buying this phone. You'd obviously want to make sure that its killer feature doesn't stop working because of something leaving a mark on your screen.

Optical sensor was considered from the human eye autonomy . Finger print sensor picks up heat . Glass will not pick up finger print if small debris is interrupting the skin. The iPhone is picking up the finger print for the pressure of the built in bottom crushes the debris picking up the finger print. Heat will always penetrate the glass screen regardless. All flat surfaces will pick up heat for sensor purposes . Buttons usually work with pressure . Most people will most likely have to live and learn , so thanks for the demonstration. Good work. 🌻

I don't know about the iPhone 8 specifically, but most capacitive fingerprint sensors (like iPhone 8's) work perfectly fine even with much worse scratching. Look up JerryRigEverything's videos and you'll see what I mean.

That's irrelevant, most fingerprint sensors are made of very scratchable materials, but still work perfectly fine even with heavy scratching.

Ole but iPhones use a very scratch resistant material on their sensors, so the point to be made is unless you're taking sand paper to the button, wear and tear of the button shouldn't ever reach a point to critically question whether it hinders functionality. They also have a couple generations of Touch ID out since 2013, so it is probably more reliable on detection as well.

No Marques, I've never had scratches or cracks on my display, because I always use a tempered glass screen protector. I have lot's of micro scratches elsewhere on the phone, but the display is scratch free.

Now that I've had the S9 for a few months, I think I prefer the sensor on the back. Even if they get under-display sensors working, I hope they keep one on the back as well.
