I feel like this should be played at schools for “how to have a healthy and respectful debate”. I personally like growing in both as well as raised beds and for the reasons both of you already mentioned. Not only do I like to experiment but different crops do well in different growing conditions. Great video, thanks!

Growing in raised beds, started indoors (for many plants) seems like the best blend of the pros while minimizing the cons of both sides. Love your content! Happy growing!

I can't grow in the ground except the newest bed I created because my ground gets saturated with water. It was one of the reasons that my first garden in this new area (not my first ever garden) flopped. I bought raised beds and storage containers and that was the game changer for me. Four years later, I'm still growing in containers, raised beds, buckets, grow bags, pots...whatever I can get my hands on to expand my garden. Btw, after four years of adding woodchips to the ground, I was able to create an elevated garden bed for my sweet potatoes. So that's the closest to in ground that I'm getting.

Myself, I do raised beds due to the heavy clay soil, and also use Greenstalk planters for greens and more compact herbs due to limited space. One plus for containers is renters who may have very limited space or are just not allowed to dig up the yard, or apartment dwellers with no yard at all can still grow some food on a patio or balcony.

I like growing veggies in pots because i live in an apartment. Also i can move them when needed. I have a sweet pepper ant i started by seed last spring and it is still doing good. I put it outside in the summer and bring it inside during the fall and put it on the radiator in my livingroom. I tried carrots in pots once and they ended up small. This year i am doing green beans i dried from my dads green beans and tomato in pots. So far they are doing good. I live in Brewer, Maine

Love your videos and I have switched over to raised beds as I am getting older and it’s easier for me to continue to garden. It also helps keep some pests away. I am just completing my 10X20 greenhouse and am trying to figure out what type of beds to put in there.

Like most people, I have veggies in containers and also in the ground We'll see how things go, but I think the soil I have has a lot of clay and it's not the best quality, I try to amend with compost and manure and other stuff. I think container gardening has a lot of benefits, but I certainly believe that it consumes more water and more fertilizer. I think it's nice to have containers near your in-ground plants so at least the water and fertilizer that drains out of the containers can end up benefitting your in-ground plants instead of just going down the drain.

I start all my tomatoes and peppers indoors but nealry all of them end up in-ground except some pepper plants that naturally stay small. I grow peas both in-ground and in containers and both work pretty well. A major category of plants that don't do well in containers are very tall plants, like most indeterminate tomatoes, pole beans, tall pea varieties; it is impractical to have tall supports in a container and there is a much greater risk of getting blown over. Very large containers can blur the line between the two -- the larger the container, the easier it is to keep it watered but it loses the advantage of being easy to move around. As for herbivores -- it depends on which ones you are concerned with. I have very few problems with rodents and no rabbits (thanks to owls and foxes) but deer are a big problem. Containers and raised beds bring plants up to a height that deer love to browse from -- it takes less energy for them than eating something close to ground level. Overall, the main deciding factor for me is a matter of scale -- a large-scale planting for me will be in-ground, small-scale usually in a container. I don't have a large flat area, but rather terraces built out of inexpensive fake stone blocks; these provide a good trade-off between drainage and moisture retention. In a flatter location, raised beds could give you a similar result.

I like growing all of my chili peppers in containers, for the reasons mentioned, and also so I don't need to worry about them being shaded by taller, faster growing plants. It's an issue in my planter boxes, which are strung out in a line, more or less north to south, due to constraints in our backyard. No good places for in-ground growing without renting space in a community garden. All my other plants are in the planter boxes.

Good video and good topic. I plant a lot in fabric grow bags and use several raised beds. The only plants I put directly in the ground is Okra and some annual flowers. I grow cucumbers, beans,, cabbage, asparagus, some herbs and a few other larger plants in the raised beds. Everything else I grow in fabric grow bags. I use 7 gallon for tomatoes, 5 gallon for peppers, chives and summer squash and 3 gallon for several herbs including sage, basil, rosemary, borage, calendula and chamomile. I also grow Thyme and potatoes, (both sweet and Irish) in 15 gallon fabric bags. I enjoy your channel, thanks for sharing.

I do both ground and containers. Potatoes, peppers, spinach, thyme, rosemary, oregano, and other spices in pots, 1 habenero, tomatoes, broccoli, peas, beans, all squash, cucumbers, carrots, rhubarb, tomatillos and all berries in ground. Did peas in a container last year, oddly only got a couple peas per pod. With containers my garden is much larger, they give me the ability to grow more in less space. I get a far better yield within in ground, with the exception of potatoes, I definitely get more potatoes in containers. (Specifically 15 gallon grow bags)

I definitely live in an area where in-ground growing isn't favorable. Its mostly clay and rocks which means all "in-ground" gardening has to be done with above ground garden beds which is a lot of work and maintenance. using pots is less maintenance and less soil costs. Pest control is also easier in pots since you can lift the plant up and inspect every inch of it and change the soil if need be for pests that lay eggs in the soil or fungus in the soil. I also like the portability of pots. I can move them on the rail of my porch which makes maintenance much easier. I also really like the customization of pots... you can pick colors, patterns, ect. I will also say that my peppers seemed to have grown better in pots vs in ground which is probably due to the quality of my top soil being mostly clay and rocks which limits nutrients and oxygen. however, the water costs is higher since they dry up faster which is an issue where I live, but it is the only negative aspect of container gardening in my current location.

I vermicompost so I sift the worms and cocoons out then use 1 part of that, 1 part perlite (my worm castings make the vermicompost heavy) and 2 parts potting mix. I then add fertilizer (always organic) and 2 parts cococoir. I fill the bottom 4-8 inches of my containers with shredded paper, toilet paper and paper towel holders then 1-2 inches of garden cutting or frozen veggies then the potting mix. I water well and allow to set 24 - 48 hours before I plant in the container because I also add 5-10 worms at the same time.

In ground is superior, just amend over time for better results. Container growing requires more stringently controlled feeding schedules. To each their own! ...Also, weeding is therapeutic...

Small yard for me means containers are my best option. And based on my limited experience, plants really don't care if everybody notices that they are being watered with an automated irrigation system.

My soil is very sandy so water doesn’t stay for long, it drains very quickly and with our heat in the Central Valley of California the soil dry quickly. All of my garden is in containers and 2 raised beds.

My husband mows over, weed whacks, poisons anything I plant in the ground. I'm mostly a container gardener. How old is your potted lemon tree? I'd love to do this, I live in Nebraska.

For me container plants increase workload and decrease plant growth. Staying on top of watering becomes a huge, time consuming job in summer whereas plants in the ground get bigger and are more resilient. Lucky with the soil we have here in Cornwall UK.

My raised bed garden does way better than my in ground garden does. I also like 5 gallon buckets for most of my pepper plants and some pota for herbs, though basil and cilantro do best close to my tomatoes where they get some shade and stay cooler in the middle of the day.

If I had a yard I would plant in ground. Container gardening has a lot of maintenance and initial costs. I garden on my balcony and use containers strictly. I live in SoCal so it's dry and hot in the summer which is the season that usually makes or breaks the garden simply due to the containers. I can't really grow indeterminate slicers and beefsteaks as those require 20 gal pots. I rather have eight determinate plants in five gallon pots than only three indeterminate plants in 15-20 gallon pots. I wish I could grow indeterminates.

Yep, growing in pots definitely has its drawbacks, but at least you can grow on your balcony! Maybe check around for a local community garden where you could rent a plot for the season?
