This video is in memory of Scottish FM Graham Morrison who sadly died last week at the age of 65. I played Graham in 2018 at the 4NCL when Barbican met Guildford and it was an amazing game featuring some inspired sacrificial play from Graham, starting with a startling AlphaZero-style long-term exchange sacrifice and following up with a further knight sac!
I’m grandmaster Matthew Sadler, a 2-times British Champion, and ranked in the world’s top 50 for many years. I’m also a prolific author. My latest book "Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" appeared in May 2023. It uses the techniques described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" to analyse afresh thirty-five of the most fascinating and complex chess games ever played by World Champions and other top grandmasters.
"Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" is available from here:

"The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" - which came out in October 2021 is, just like this channel, all about learning from and training with engines. My previous book, the award-winning Game Changer - written together with Natasha Regan - brought the amazing chess games of DeepMind’s AlphaZero to the world.

"Game Changer" came out on 20th January 2019 and won the prestigious ECF Book of the Year and FIDE Book of the Year prizes for 2019! The Game Changer chess book is available in print and digital versions from these links:

Fantastic game, thanks for sharing. Met Graham quite a few times. A nice and gentle chap but could play some crazy attacks like in this one.

Thanks! I missed his vattacks in my quick preparation against him - wish I'd known! This came as quite a shock during the game!

What a thrilling game! At 10:44, is reason the engines prefer Bxc7 in order to challenge the knight landing on e5? (Similar to what Nc6 does at 12:09?) Condolences to Graham Morrison's family and friends.

Yes exactly. The g4-g5-g6/gxh6 is actually less dangerous than the knight establishing itself on e5. I hadn't grasped that (it is difficult to be sure about stuff like that during a game 😊 )

Thanks Martyn. Yes a real shame, people only have kind words to say about him and he was very friendly after our game.

The endless complications of the game of chess - the scope for originality - all credit to Graham for this game.
