The book I have shows a different way to play the intro using open strings, and all around the 2, 3, 5 which is a bit easier if you can’t do the stretch,

I've been playing the intro melody wrong all these years. It involved a bit of string skipping because of a bad tab book I had many years ago. The riff at the end of this video, I just leave it and play the other riff so that I can sing over it. If I was in a band I'd get the other guitarist to play it.
