Wow that surprised me because my 89 year old mother said it started when she was a young woman. Her cousins and uncle called the pus slice. Snot slice. and so on. So it has been around a LONG TIME. I am 59 and heard it all my life.

Hi Taryn - another Kiwi cook here. I've been thinking of making custard squares again which I haven't done since my children were little. I do always make my custards, sauces and gravies in the microwave and have never had a problem with lumps. My go to custard recipe was given to me years ago by a very old country lady - but yours intrigues me and I will definitely try it. I've subscribed and look forward to exploring your channel.

Hi Taryn, It is really pretty! I had never heard of custard powder and had to look it up. Here in America we have instant pudding and Google recommends using that as a substitute. Also, we don't have corn flour here, but we do have corn starch. I'm amazed by the differences between our countries when it comes to ingredients. BTW, I missed you last week. I hoped you were well. Glad to see you back.
@EasyPeasyKitchen3 жыл бұрын
Hi Miriam, thanks for your comment. It is interesting what is available and not available in different countries! Yes corn flour and cornstarch are the same thing. I have updated the recipe in the description and also added a note for how to make your own custard powder. This is really just a flavouring and you can leave it out completely if you wanted to. That is interesting about the instant pudding, I hadn't thought of that, but it should work and you could potentially get different flavours using that too. I'll be uploading videos every second week for a few months. I left a message on the SFMK community tab, but maybe you missed it :-)

Great video! Ha ha ha! Yes, off-cuts don't last very long, do they! My husband was quite put out that there were no off-cuts from the cake I made for our son's wedding, yesterday, after I tortured him all week with the smells of baking. Usually, when I carve a cake, there are plenty of off-cuts leftover, but I needed them to bulk up the lamb's tummy.

Could you just use custard powder Taryn, or is how you did it how you get that custard square flavour. 😋💗
@EasyPeasyKitchen3 жыл бұрын
No you can't just use custard powder for the whole thing, that will give you a much stodgier custard. Doing it this way gives a smoother, creamier custard and the little bit of custard powder is a flavouring. I have made it without the custard powder and it was still yummy. Maybe that's where is gets it's vanilla slice name from.
