Sawyer held on to the rope and it traveled with him to a time before the well was ever built. The MIB’s people probably came across the rope just sticking out of the ground and that is why they decided to dig there.

Remember 5X16 " The Incident" Jacob weaves (curtain or whatever it was) he tells a storry of when the Egyptians lived on the Island (and left). Since we assume they built the temple and worshiped the black smoke, we also asume they built erected the wheel in the well after they had found the rope that Sawyer brought to the past during their time jumping.

I think the "mother" really did favour MIB. When he asks her about death she says it's something he'll never have to worry about, implying that she wanted him to be her successor. She also doesn't deny it when Jacob says she wanted it to be his brother.

The first time Locke tells Eko that he saw the "monster," he says he saw a very bright light. Eko tells him, "That is NOT what I saw." I guess UnLocke took the form of light, probably similar to the heart of the island, just to make Locke feel special or chosen or something, probably reading his mind and seeing that he had that miracle of getting his legs back and was ripe to look for something to believe in.

The real MIB died here, Smokey basically escaped once a dead body entered the cave so it could "copy it", same as it did with Christian and Locke, it pretty much inherited the personalities of them all while retaining its original purpose.

Whats interesting about this episode is that it shows you how the island "religion" was created. All of those myths / rituals / rules we heard about, those are just things that happened in the past, stories that were repeated over and over again by people who don't really know how all of it works. For example: The mother was stabbed in the back by a dagger. As far as Jacob and MIB know, that was the only way to kill one of "their kind". MIB gave the same dagger to Richard hoping those are the rules, later Richard repeated the same thing to people in the temple and they repeated the same thing to Said. We don't even know if those rules are real, they are just legends that were repeated over thousands of years.

Been dying to see your reaction to this one. Thanks for making us wait, lol. When this aired I was in the camp of "why the hell are we seeing this? When are we going to cut back to our gang???". I've grown to absolutely love it, and how it explains the lore of the island, but I still feel like it should have been placed earlier in the season. The wait for the series finale was brutal and this just seemed like a roadblock to it. You bingers have it easy these days. I find it really funny that Allison Janney went on to star in the show "Mom" after this.

About the body and smoke monster form being separated: I'm pretty sure Flocke said on a previous episode how Jacob "took my body from me" or something along those lines. Also, we did see smoke monster as "Facob", on S5 finale the first scene is before the Black Rock (with Richard) get to the island, Jacob was already the protector of the island and Facob was already the smoke monster. Also on 6x09 (Richard's episode) we see him on his original form and as the smoke monster.

Also fun fact: this is the only episode of the show where no main cast members appears. (Yes, we have the flashback to Jack, Kate and Locke finding the dead bodies on 1x06, but that's just reused footage from old episodes, so it's not a new appearance or anything)

This episode closes "the circle" (coincidentally, the working title for the show). We now have the key to understand everything that happened in the show. Of course a lot of things happened between many characters, but everything really happened "for the sake of the island", apparently.Because the island hides "the source" of everything. The "mother" might have had a similar fate for the previous millennia. I really like the way the writers described this seemingly sacred job as an unbearable burden, for maybe the wrong person. Who knows the rules she had to endure, just like Jacob and the man in black

Also, I got to say your comment about Sawyer grabbing on to the rope during his time flash is very observant. A common theory people have is that Man in Black and his people never would have started digging if they hadn't found a random rope sticking out of the ground. In other words, Sawyer and his group started the whole chain of events by leaving that rope sticking there. Making the whole thing a paradox.
@BigMikeKOE

I think the reason why the Man in Black is considered to be so evil is because, imagine harboring hate and anger for everyone for hundreds, if not thousands of years. He became everything he described humans to be, times 1000. If he were to leave the Island now, as powerful as he is, nothing good would come of it.

I always felt that the smoke and the brother are two different entities. The monster is a manipulator and evil, takes the shape of the brother and his motives, but is ultimetly a demon or something. Jacob lays his brother to rest at the end and says goodbye because he was remorseful for killing the human entity that was his brother, because like you said, the brother wasn't really in the wrong or a bad person.

this episode is INCREDIBLE in my opinion. its SUPER well done and written ✨ wow! claudia does look like ilana! "then who is it!?" "another character for the next six seasons!" HAHA that was gold 😎 "every question i answer will simply lead to more questions" LOL that's the writer's way of telling us to STOP ASKING (but we can't help it!!!) 🤪 oh Rob focusing on the cave instead haha! but i like the fact that jacob & the mib are in white and black blankets when they’re born, such a cool detail 🤯 "yes, phillip!" OMG LOL that was too funny ("the murdurous scum could've named him") 🥲 the casting in this show is unbelievable. the kids really look like the older versions of themselves. 😁 i LOVE the questions that jacob and the mib were asking. trin was 100% correct, they were amazing questions! 🧐 "now imagine a box.." not again lol 😅 i love the line “one day you can make up up your own game and everyone else will have to follow your rules.” SUPER telling 🤩 "early hatch" indeed 👍🏻 YES ROB!!! you figured out the wheel/light thing!! yay! 🎉 its honestly crazy how far back in time they went 😉 such a good scene where the black smoke comes out from the heart!! 😱 what’s even more crazy is that the two people who were found in S1 in the cave are mother & the mib’s original body. like, WHAT?! i love the fact that they also flashback to that scene to make it better. such a good scene and very well acted too. its one of my fav reveals on this show, and there are tons! so good. 😳🤯 season 1 is actually awesome after watching this, from rewatches it still blows my mind! 😊 tbh, i do feel bad for jacob & the mib because they were sort of “forced” to be stuck on an island and live their lives as enemies from one another 😭 "you absolute sugars" 😂 understanding flocke is something i 100% understand because why would he want to be there? 😢 some people don't like this ep. because we get so many answers when we're so close to the end, but to me i love that and idk why! im so glad rob enjoyed it and trin seemed to really enjoy it on the rewatch!! such a good episode. especially because like you guys said all of the references from previously. 😌 i cannot believe we are almost to the end.. st and now this is ending! super bittersweet. see you guys in the next one! im going to go watch the st finale since i missed it ✌

So excited for you to get to this episode! The light is the answer to everything. As for the timing of this and when it all happened, we never get a firm answer but a lot of people assume it was not long after AD 54 during Roman times. That's when Roman emperor Claudius ruled. The boys' birth mom was named Claudia and she and Mother are speaking Latin to each other. It was common for children to be named after the Roman emperor at that time.

Well, I've always understood that Jacob and his brother weren't the first condemned to guard the island, just as their mother wasn't the first either. And the stature much earlier ... in the beginning there was light! The Light of the World! Relatively at the beginning it will have been paradisically easy to accept the fate of staying on the island for an indefinitely long time. No shipping, no planes... Just think that many mechanisms were built in by the island itself to protect itself as time progressed in the evolution and progress of mankind. Such as birth control. - I think it's an absolute must-see for every fan of mystery series LOST! What always comes to mind first about Jacob and his brother (they could have put a name to it 😄) the conversations about people. That they are nasty, mean, selfish and hurt and kill each other. 😔And we've had a lot of that for all 6 seasons.

Rob real talk your perception on this episode was truly truly impressive. from the word go you were on the cave, the bodies, the wheel, etc... just outstanding sir. A few things, 1) mother couldn't commit suicide because she was the one with the power, she basically did commit suicide by passing her power to Jacob. 2) I do think you read the 'Mothers" I love you differently wrong. I feel she does realize MIB is special and wants him to be the eventual successor, she loves Jacob like any mother would love all her children, but even up till the end Jacob realized he was the 2nd choice. After she wiped out the village she was resigned to dying (she betrayed her favorite son and was tired of all involved, as you noted she looked a wreck) she passed her powers on to Jacob which made her vulnerable, and she new MIB would kill her... Jacob would never have given her sweet relief. That is why she thanked MIB . But TLDR: MIB was the favorite son but that didn't mean she didn't love her other son... just not as much lol that's my 2 cents on the matter or 2 pence if your so inclined

So a very debatable theory was; is Mother a smoke monster? I believe she is she wrecked that Village just like the smoke monster wrecked the temple. She couldn't have possibly as a normal human refilled that whole well and kill off everybody on her own. She conveniently knew that going into the light was a fate worse than death. Was stabbed by the knife that Dogan said you must stab before they talk which is exactly what happened and afterwards she said thank you.

The game Jacob and the Man in Black are playing is called Senet. The official Lost documentary is here on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKunmn2iqcd3n7c Hint: Pay extra attention to the part about the "Invisible / Own Soul Adversary"... This is a reference to the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taiji as practiced in the martial art Taiji-Quan / Tai Chi. There is an identical reference in Mysteries of the Universe. The Dharma logotype is a Bagua-symbol originating from Taiji as well. The meaning is briefly discussed but to understand the reference to Dharma you must understand what Taiji is about, look it up. This episode should be enough to understand the mysterious Dharma Initiative and what they were trying to accomplish. I think it's a coincidence that Jacob's brother and Black Smoke both want to leave the island (each for different reasons). They're 2 different characters I believe, it makes more sense that they're not one person. When Black Smoke take their bodies their memories continue to do what they wanted when they were alive: Christian wants to help his son Jack (to find water), Yemy wants his brother to confess and face the consequences, Locke wants to belong to a group of people (that's why Flocke gather a group of islanders to follow him, he is their leader like Locke alwayes wanted) and finally Man in Black wants to leave the island and "go home" (Devil aka Black Smoke just wants to corrupt the world so they kinda want the same here but it's just a coincidence). I believe Black Smoke is a devil force and that he has never been a human, he only has bits of humans memories, emotions and motivations from dead people.

The man in black is "special" and Jacob is a worthless mamas boy. The MIB tells Jacob about his mothers lies and crimes and how she is lying and preventing him from going home. Finally thru a tremendous act of courage and bravery, the MIB survives his mothers "Purge" and rises to slay the Big Bad of the island. Woot!! Only to have the moment stolen seconds later, Jacob take up the mantle of big bad and murders his brother, then imprisson him after he steal his brothers body. Damn, Jacob is a POS and anyone on team Jacob is helping the real bad guy. This episode is all the proof you need that we should all be on TEAM MIB. The evidence 'for' is definitely very compelling. I mean, how would she know that going down into the source was a fate worse than death unless she'd gone down there herself? And it's interesting that the MIB kills her with a knife before she gets a chance to speak to him (Dogen's advice to Sayid is to do exactly this). In S1E5, after rescuing Jack clinging to the edge of a cliff, Locke has a conversation with him and says "I've looked into the eye of this Island. And what I saw was beautiful.". I think in episode 4, the Black Smoke, who knows where the source is since Jacob takes him there without blindfolding him to rush him there, shows Locke the source, which looks like a eye and who is beautiful as the boy in black says in this episode when he sees it for the first time. This is definitely part of one of the MIB's plans to use Locke as he will later do with Ben so he can finally leave. it's a genesis episode of LOST that comes at the end, a bit like closing a loop. Loops are common in the series when you see all the past actions that cause the characters to do that they themselves will do those past actions or be the instigators of them.

I think Locke sees an image of the light source within the actual smoke, rather than being led to it in a physical sense. We know the Black Smoke can show people images (like when Ben sees images of Alex in the smoke while being 'judged'). And there's a conversation where the MIB says he's been trying to find the light source again but has never managed to.

I'm glad you enjoyed the episode so much, since many fans where very upset with it. They thought it to be too supernatural with the light and the creation of the black smoke. As if a black smoke monster could be explained natural. ;) Exspection of fans went of the roof over the seasons and could never be satisfied. Same thing happened with Game of Thrones. I hope you enjoy the last episodes as much as this one. You will be satified i think.

The writers/producers did some real art with this episode. Very consistent with the story that was built up for us through the seasons.

Except the writers of GOT rushed the series in order to do a StarWars trilogy which ended up never happening. They built up so many plots in some characters that I felt never used their skills to the fullest potential such as Arya and Bran. And Maybe one more season beyond season eight with Dany being an evil tyrant mad queen would have shown us how dangerous she was. Yes we saw all the signs leading to it but one more season or two would have given the series a proper closure.

@TJMalana maybe another season would have been better. Maybe it would have made it worse. However even with another season many people would not have liked the outcome, since they portayed Dany way too good in the early seasons. And made Brans story not important enough. Aryas Story in my opinion was complete and told. You wanted more, i was satisfied. People are allowed to have different opinions. Thank you for sharing yours. I mean it.

I just realized karma was the reason Sayid died: Sayid shoot Ben trying to kill him - and Ben's father actually killed Sayid! He would died from Rodger's gunshots anyway (temple people were not able to save him after Jacob's death - something was not working).

Rob, please don't mistake the black smoke for Jacob's brother. Just like the black smoke became Locke and was able to use his appearance, voice, and memories to manipulate the people around him to get what he wants (to leave and corrupt the world with his darkness), the same goes for Jacob's brother. Jacob sending his brother into the light was a sacrifice (the first body) to release the darkness as a physical form. Once the black smoke took the appearance of Jacob's brother, Jacob knew his "mother" was right about the darkness. That's why originally when Jacob's brother wanted to leave the island, Jacob didn't try to stop him. But when he realized his brother was the black smoke (after his death), he made sure to do everything he could to keep him on the island.

"I don't dislike flocke as much now" sure, it was a tragedy what happened with the MIB in the beginning. Does that justify all the people he's killed? There must be hundreds, perhaps thousands over the years, victims of his rage. As tragic as his beginning was, he is now truly evil, so I shed no tears for MIB. I just can't say, hey, I get it, you have every right to kill Jin and Sun and Sayid.... the list is long.

well but we dont see the man in black kill that many people.. and even IF he did he could only do so because JACOB brought all the people to the island after mother died and his brother was turned to the smoke monster by him. Jacob on the other hand has MUCH more blood on his hands but still this show tries to tell us that he is the "good" guy.. Yeah sure... i mean he let a plane crash where atleast 100 people died just because jacob HAD to bring his candidates via plane crash to the island killing so many innocent people just for his own personal goals.. not to mention all the people who died before 815 (dharma and others) and the ones that died after the plane crashed.. So yeah in my book Jacob is WAY more evil than the Man in Black ever was. MiB also never said anything of wanting to destroy the whole world thats just what others said about him what would happen if he ever left the island. But HOW could they know? How can anyone defend Jacob but not MiB which's life was ruined by jacob? SMH...

@@Tenpinmaster ... If you think Jacob is the absolute power of the island, you clearly don't understand this show. He is a conduit for the source, but the source is the prime mover, it is sentient. Since the source is connected to these pockets all over the world, it doesn't take much of an imagination that crap like that started happening everywhere. Jacob's brother is NOT the smoke monster, just like Locke is NOT the smoke monster. Jacob's brother and Locke both are dead. that’s debatable, but i feel quite confident it’s not as you say. all interactions that smokey has with jacob are in the same register of the conversations between jacob and his brother in this episode, when the latter was still alive…the smoke monster “wants to go home” and this episode clearly explains what that means, but it makes sense only if we assume that smokey is jacob’s brother…and in next episode (i’m sure rob and trin have watched it by now) jacob says he made smokey this way..this comes from a basically omniscient entity, the smoke monster could have not tricked him into thinking it was his brother when it wasn’t, exactly as jacob could instantly recognize smokey pretending to be locke in “the incident”…so no, i’m quite sure that smokey IS jacob’s brother, at least a representation of its soul heavily corrupted by the light
