They dropped a lot of their plotline and even stole some of their lines and gave them to Usnavi and Vanessa instead.

As far as I can tell, the musical doesn’t have a spin-off sequel, so the movie realistically should stand on its own. It’s kinda disappointing, really.

I think not seeing Benny and Nina's future was deliberate. I heard that one creator, Quiara Alegría Hudes, married their childhood sweetheart. The other creator, Lin Manuel Miranda, married someone he met later in life. They said the ending is open because that means the songs work both for people who see Benny and Nina as their first and only love...and they also work for people who see Benny and Nina as the one who got away. I think that's beautiful
