Speaking of Nina’s hair, one little detail I really like in the movie was how when we are first introduced to Nina here, she starts with straight hair, with some blonde highlights. And then after a day back in her neighborhood, went back to curly hair. And it gets progressively curlier as the movie goes on. And at the end, as she is leaving back to Stanford, her hair is fully brown and curly. It’s like she had to hide her Hispanic/indigenous roots to be able to fit in college, but once back home was proudly displaying her latinidad! And as she goes back to college, she finally accepts that she’s not the one that needs to change. Like Abuela said, Little details that tell the world, we are not invisible.

This song isn’t just a technically well done song. It speaks so deeply to our culture and the pressure put on our well-performing youth. Those of us who did well academically are always seen as the ones who ‘can make it out’ - the ones who will ‘defy the odds’. We become the saviors of our community whether we want to or not. And when we don’t or can’t succeed in a way that is monetarily measurable, the guilt that comes along with that is so visceral and painful. So many levels to this song.

I enjoyed seeing Ariana Greenblatt as little Nina during this scene. I like Leslie's voice, she did a great job on this song. I like how in the movie, Nina is seen to be fresh-out-of-college while in the original Broadway production (with Mandy Gonzalez), she acts and sounds more mature. Both actresses are great, just different perspectives (of the character Nina singing this song).

The people centering their focus on her in this song, in my opinion, is supposed to demonstrate the pressure she feels to be successful in order to be what her community expects of her. They represent more of her subconscious relationships between her and the others, thus why the little girl is there interacting as a younger version of her who saw unlimited potential with no understanding of the ceiling she needs to break to reach her dreams beyond the horizon. It’s an internal struggle of , who am I vs. who am I expected to be?

@@mjr3902 same! The original version hits SO HARD emotionally, the first time I heard it I was sobbing on the floor because I related to it so much. This one felt a lot weaker and less effective - I get maybe they were going fit a more “realistic” feel (so it wouldn’t feel like you were at the theater) (which is why Claudia’s first “calor, calor, calor” is also so soft in the movie)… anyway, by doing so they took away too much of the pain, emotion, etc and thus the song in the movie bounces gently past the audience instead of punching them right in the feels :(

Personally, this song has marked me a lot, since really Nina's voice (Lesslie Grace) is so sweet and she has a truth to face and tell her father ... I didn't hear Mandy's original voice first but Lesslie's; and really in my opinion Lesslie makes it as cute and sweet as Nina's character is. Now removing the subject of the voice (ok not really we will also talk about that xd) the scene of "When I was a child" the spin off of the scenes and the feeling that gives it .. It was something that marked me a lot since I must give my all, and see a girl grow up with the help of her father and leave him to study AND BREAK in the "what'll you be" ... *just breathe ...*

This was great I just couldn’t understand what she was saying and I KNOW the lyrics. She didn’t enunciate like at ALL. Someone who doesn’t know the lyrics would have had no clue. When she sang “Just breathe” I heard the “just” but the breathe was more like “ree” lol

Could it be that I missed that bc I know the lyrics? 😂
