The time is now! Watch an extended intro of #InTheHeightsMovie
and see it only in cinemas June 24.
The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... “In the Heights.”
Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
“In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.
“In the Heights” stars Anthony Ramos (“A Star is Born,” Broadway’s “Hamilton”), Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “BlacKkKlansman”), singer/songwriter Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (TV’s “Vida”), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s “In the Heights”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s “Rent”), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s “Matilda the Musical”), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Dascha Polanco (TV’s “Orange is the New Black”) and Jimmy Smits (the “Star Wars” films).
Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the musical stage play, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and concept by Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.
Behind the camera, Chu reunited with his “Crazy Rich Asians” production designer, Nelson Coates, and editor, Myron Kerstein. He also collaborated with director of photography Alice Brooks (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and costume designer Mitchell Travers (“Eighth Grade”). Original songs by Miranda. Alex Lacamoire (“Fosse/Verdon”) and Bill Sherman (“Sesame Street”) served as executive music producers. The choreography is by Christopher Scott, who previously teamed with Chu on the award-winning “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
“In the Heights” was filmed in New York, primarily on location in the dynamic community of Washington Heights.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a 5000 Broadway / Barrio Grrrl! / Likely Story / SGS Pictures Production, A Jon M. Chu Film, “In the Heights.”, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

I think Lin plays him as more of a guy going to do everything to get his dream and who thinks he’s better than the heights, Anthony plays him more like a regular dude who can’t believe it when his dream is coming true even though he worked hard for it (and is a lil better at singing imo)

The part where they add" My Family came from miles away!" Really hits as a 3rd generation latino. Because we as 3rd and 4th generation Latinos have always been in the US, we were born here but our families, our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles were from miles away in our respective countries of origin. We are here because of them. And we often forget that. Its good to remind yourself you wouldn't be here without them.

Stephen Sondheim had a lot of rules when it comes to songwriting, one of which is “Content dictates form”. Which mean their characters reflect on how their songs are written. Lin actually said in a couple of interviews that that's his favorite part of making musicals, giving each character their own style and musical essence. For example, whenever abuela Claudia was talking/singing, there would be cuban music in the background, and whenever Usnavi was talking/singing there would be a type of hip-hop music in the background, and when the two of them interacted there would be a mix of these two styles in the background. Genius idea and execution imo

one of my favorite scenes is towards the end when the power is out and theyre having a party to say goodbye to the hairdressers. In the middle of the song, Vanessa and Sonny stop and try to get everyone to realize that they're "powerless", that they're underprivileged and in danger and they can't fight back against the system. Usnavi pulls Sonny aside and is like, "Yeah, we know. We're up shit's creek, and there's nothing we can do. So we may as well be happy in the moment with each other." This really struck me, this undercurrent of anger and resentment at how they're treated by the world at large. Is it justified for them to decide to be happy in the moment, or should they stay angry and cognizant of they're situation?

this is awkward to say but it’s weird to see dominican culture represented so well in “mainstream” media. for example when Stephanie grabbed a pack of Festival cookies or when they were having queso frito y salami for breakfast. they’re small details but it’s refreshing to see that millions of people grew up like i did and despite being “immigrants” we still maintain our culture wherever we go.

This show and this song specifically have always given me an indescribable feeling. I’m white and middle-class, so I’ll never understand what this is like, and the struggle that immigrants and their descendants have to go through in this country. To have this show, which is a story that comes from a place of love from someone who grew up in Washington Heights to in some ways show what it means and feels to have that experience always inspires an appreciation for these people and their culture. It makes me want to know more, to listen, to try and understand. I realize a musical will really only ever be able to present a somewhat idealized version of these things, but I feel like it’s a start.

I listened to the musical after listening to Hamilton and my family REALLY didn’t want to, so I was the only one in the house who had listened to In The Heights. Until the movie came out. And my parents were like “wow now I see why she likes this so much.” I love it all Edit: Okay After Watching Hazbin Hotel and listening to Daphne in the original rent, I don't think you understand how much I love this woman. And Stephanie between Encanto, Brooklyn 99, this and Hazbin Hotel?! Please.

Guatemalan who lived in NYC here. Latinos in NYC always, and I mean always, know their roots and know that we gotta carry on this great opportunity that we were given when we immigrated to the USA. Absolutely love how literally the entire intro is focused on how we roll throughout the day and how we always cherish what we were given

Man I found out about In The Heights shortly after Hamilton blew up on Disney+ at the start of last year through Spotify. Normally I just skip songs I've never heard before on Spotify because I'm a creature of habit and like to listen to the same old songs so the fact that I even found it was a miracle in itself. But the moment I heard "That was Abuela, she's not really my Abuela, but she practically raised me, this corner is her escuela now." I was so hooked that I opened up the entire soundtrack and dived in. I loved every song. Then I even found out they were gonna make a movie that was set to release in summer 2020! I couldn't believe it! I just found this awesome thing and only a few months from now it's gonna be a movie! But then of course COVID hit and the movie was pushed back a year. Not only did that suck but work started slowing down despite being considered essential (turns out it doesn't matter if you're essential, when there is an unknown pathogen roaming around people aren't too keen to hire construction workers). The point I'm trying to get at here is that, that Broadway soundtrack kept me in balance for the majority of 2020 and now to finally hear those words again, even if the movie isn't perfect, it brings me to tears regardless.

lin manuel miranda is a genius and he knows which actors fit well with literally most characters 80 percent of the time and the actors are hella good even with small roles like the piragua guy and the people just in the background dancing or walking for coffee

As someone who’s obsessed with various choreographers and dancers, I can’t BELIEVE Emilio Dosal not only choreographed parts of the dance numbers, but was in most of the numbers, and I didn’t even notice until I rewatched the movie 😂 (He’s first at 7:08 and then 8:15, in gray and a hat to the front left). I love this guy he’s so damn talented!! This movie really put the beauty in the details ❤️
