You are by far the most complete professional Corporate pilot doing videos on KZbin that I've seen. Camera work, music, explaining everything you're doing. It's like riding along with a Flight Instructor. Can't begin to tell you what that means to all of us. Don't get me wrong some of the others come extremely close to you. I am a retired part-time videographer, also pilot years ago, and I can appreciate your professionalism in everything you do. Looking forward to your next video. Keep up the great work.

During my flight training, we did my Night XC from Fort Pierce down to FXE for a full stop. Once we took off, my instructor told me to maintain course since we were taking off to the west and he took me out over the everglades. This video just brings back those memories of instantly losing all sight of the ground and that blackhole effect. He described that this is the closest you can get without being IFR and as a VFR pilot to be extra caustious when performing flights like this. Thanks for the video steveo! Love when you get unique situations like this and turn it into a learning example for others!

I've watched a lot of your videos but never commented. I really enjoyed reliving my Air Force instrument flying training/actual experience memories by watching this video! My favorite aspect of flying was instrument flying, I loved the challenge of it. When you went "blacked out horizon" the old training vibes kicked in and I was with this video all the way! In a good way, being in "sync" with the instruments is actually very calming versus the potential to get freaked out when you lose visual contact with the horizon day or night. Just this past month I flew commercial to Miami to Ecuador and from Ecuador to Miami and YES, there is not much in terms of light in South Florida at night except on the coasts!!! I enjoyed this video!

Great video! It can't be stressed enough how dangerous it is flying VFR at night over water with no moon! I made a VFR flight to KEYW one moonless night and if I hadn't been right in the middle of working on my IFR rating I'd probably be a statistic. This is one of those rare cases that just because it's legal doesn't mean it should be done!

@@philipbre If we're being honest, ALL flying is dangerous. Airplanes are extremely complex mechanical devices that can experience a failure at any time, and unlike a car you can't just pull over if the engine quits. You're coming down, and not necessarily in a good location. And that's assuming you're doing everything right! Throw pilot error in there and the risk goes up substantially.

I got my private license at KEYW (my hometown) in 1978 during college breaks, paying for it by working as a line service guy at the FBO there, then called 'Island City Flying Service'. (A good way to learn lots about aviation by "hangar flying" and listening to other pilots, instructors, and seeing some stuff happen. ("Well, I know now not to try that!".) Going back to college in Tampa, I rented a mighty C152 and flew to EYW for a long weekend with a friend. I made the return tip on a dark, moonless night, just like your trip. Not instrument rated, (pre-GPS, and using DR for Nav), but benefitting from an instructor who did some hood work with me, I was instantly on the gauges about 2 minutes into the flight. Dangerous because the nautical buoy lights and stars blend, and can cause bad "spatial D". My friend, looking down out of the right widow, is like" Hey look, I can see the dog track on Stock Island". Me: "Thanks, but...(I'm just trying to keep us from dying right now"). On the gauges, doing 90 KIAS, until up around Fort Meyers. Another "I learned a lot about flying from that" story. Went on to get instrument rated (a must!) and got 1000 hours in the F-14 Tomcat as a RIO. Still flying - In NE now. I really enjoy the videos Steveo, as I get to fly in Florida vicariously through your site. Keep up the great work!

Your camera work and narration DOES replicate the awe and exhilaration of pitch black night flying then transitioning into lighted area. It's frickin' awesome. I personally love it. That was a lot of deja vu for me. Learning to fly in Key West 45 years ago, my CFI took me up in the dark a few times and I was totally freaked out when he made me turn away from the lights. He actually made me go on my own but told me not to turn away from town. I never liked it there because it was so freaky and not being IFR rated, even more so! The other really weird thing was that a Convair was trailing you. When I was there, I worked for Air Sunshine (office) who flew DC3's and Convairs. That was a whole other era for sure. So when he was talking to a Convair I said Whoa that's too weird! Lots of memories. Great flight!

Back in the late 70s or early 80s, my father was a CFI and was teaching both my mother and myself how to fly. They were doing a long night cross country, and they were either flying a Cherokee 180 or a Skylane, I can't remember which one. They were flying back from upstate New York to Groton, CT. It was dark, and very few lights for ground reference. My father turned to my mom and asked her if she was planning on continuing the spiral into the ground. I guess she had turned over 270º in heading in a gentle, but ever increasing bank. She had no clue what he was talking about, and thought she was straight and level. She didn't realize what was happening. One of the other things is long, straight roads that run at an angle to your path of flight, it's very easy to mistake those for the horizon. After I got my ticket, I would often fly with pilots who were doing 'check runs.' This was to pick up a bunch of checks from banks and then fly them to a regional processing center. Again, way back in the 80s, and of course, we'd be doing this at night. I learned a lot about 'instrument flying' on VFR nights, and the importance of having a well trimmed airplane and constantly cross checking your horizon, altimeter, and heading indicator. I wonder, though, with the new generation of pilots that are flying wide screen glass cockpits if this is as much an issue as it was. I mean, you've got this huge horizon staring you in the face from a 10" display, and it's really kind of hard to not look at that. Granted, your inner ear can still play tricks on you. As to the laser, I hope they find the kid, it's going to be some kid, and that his parents are held responsible. If it was a teenager, I'd like to see them get some jail time. The concept of a laser blinding a pilot is too real and too much damage could be done. If you had a full load and someone flashed you on approach, that person could conceivably be responsible for the death of 4 or 5 people. They don't think about that. So, I hope they found whoever did this and the full force of the law comes home. There is up to an $11,000 fine for doing this, and over $30,000 for multiple laser incidents (I'm assuming that is not multiple aircraft in one night, although that wouldn't be bad, either.)

@6:18 Referring to flying at night... I love it too. The pattern of lights below yoy gives a very different view of life's patterns... Almost like a film negative... it's like a dark reverse image of what you'd see during the day. And the airport lights. I absolutely love the airport lights. Kind of a cozy secluded feel to it. I also love seeing the approach lights after a minimum ILS approach.

I somehow find that airspeed indicator very unnerving. Excellent flight Steve. Loving it.
