Indeed, we are in the shadow of another world. The "gilded age" structure pictured in thumbnail fits the story's title. Oh yeah, great reading of a good story. Thanks for doing Ligotti stuff, he's one of my favorite short story writers.

Thanks. This is a restored house in Detroit that dates back to the 1800s. It’s pretty famous apparently. Light to being from Detroit I think his house is something like this, with the turret and all
