In Which Hank Worries for a Little Bit and then Looks at Microbes

Did I record an entire video about voting rights and coups and leaders of this country thinking they could ride tigers without getting bitten by them? Yes! Yes I did. But as I was recording it I felt more and more like I was incapable of adding anything without over simplifying or rambling! In general, I am angry, and am glad to have the ability to take refuge in microbes occasionally.

@@Kashgawalis That is actually how you get amoeba brain infections from lakes, typically, at least according to my old microbiology professor. If you jump in a lake in a way that could push water up your nose (i.e. feet first instead of head first, so your nostrils are pointed down when they go under), it risks the water going up too far into your sinuses and bad things can happen. Hold your nose if you jump in like that, and ideally breathe out through your nostrils if your head is going under so that you keep the water pushed out. Even more ideally, don't get your head under the water in the first place, but I myself have broken that rule lots of times.

The shrimpy thing at 2:45 is called an ostracod! They're tiny tiny crustaceans that burrow in the sand and feast on aquatic detritus. Some ostracod species even produce bioluminescent secretions that they use for complex mating displays. I spent a summer dissecting these lil guys and I can't articulate how excited I am to not only encounter them outside of research, but in a vlogbrothers video too!!

For a chance to see the “guy with arms” properly, you need to make “legs” on a small cover glass. One does those by draging each corner of the glass by a surface of soft play do. Then you gently cover the beast. Then you slowly push on the glass, until he is trapped, but the “arms” are still moving. His round shell allows him to be stuck between the glass plates, being immobilized but unhurt. I studied them when I was 9 and keeping them alive through the process was “a thing” for me.

I think your shrimpy at 3:17 is a copepod (from a side-on view). 2:14 I think you might have an annelid (maybe an oligochaete based on the bristles, or chaetae), and the second wiggly worm 2:56 is likely a flatworm (Platyhelminthes) in the class Catenulida!

This is the coolest thing I've seen since like 2018 and I am so excited it's on youtube where I got the privlige of seeing it and I am literally just SO EXCITED about teeny tiny things in lakes in Montana!! Happy Monday.
