Inadvertently BASED: Barbie Movie Review - So Woke it Devolves into Hilarious Satire!!

So I finally saw Barbie to see for myself what all the fuss was about. However I found myself rather enjoying it for all the wrong reasons. The woke levels of the movie were so extreme that it actually came across as satire and mocked what woke, intersectionality preach!!

I went to see it with my sister, whobhas Down Syndrome, because she's a huge Barbie fan. When it finished, she looked at me and said: "I liked it the most when the Kens all stood up for eachother, and helped eachother! I liked the Kens the most, the Barbies were mean to them." Even SHE saw how the Kens were treated so badly!

People with Downs really are precious. One of my all time favorite quotes was made by a random Downs man in front of me at an aquarium: "You shouldn't worry so much. Everything will be fine." God bless that man, it was exactly what I needed to hear right then and he wasn't even talking to me.

The problem with equality or intersectionality is that it has become a hammer and anything that resembles inequality or the apparent inequality is a nail. An example, say you are black; if you come on my site as a fresh labourer, you are going to start from the labouring wages, regardles of skin colour or gender. If you find out that a skilled labourer who is white, that has been on my site for 8 months then you will say that I, as the boss, am racist. The problem is that you have to prove yourself first before having an increase in wages and that comes with time.

It would have been a masterful plot twist if Greta actually meant to do a satire while pretending she was serious about the messaging. I would have tipped my hat off to it and would gladly say that I was bamboozled. Sadly, that isn't the truth, and the movie was actually a success in all the WRONG ways for her.

I think people are forgetting another possibility. The director might have had one intention, while the studio had a completely different one. I mean, it's safe to assume they actually wanted this film to make money and took steps to ensure the director didn't botch it completely. We could infer from their reaction to Margot Robie's publicly declaring this a feminist film, responding that it most certainly wasn't, that there may well have been at least two competing creative visions at work to shape the final product which hit theaters. The director was probably hired to lure feminists into the seats while the film itself by all accounts has a strong subtextual undercurrent that directly challenges its feminist overtones.
@brittscott4673

I am glad that it comes across as based. I haven't seen the movie,but I have seen a variety of reviews and I think AZ really nailed it. Greta's intent was to make a film with extreme feminist agenda,but it was so over the top it makes feminism look like a ridiculous joke.😂

its not unheard of for a writer director to NOT acutally be the one that did the deed and behind the scenes producers etc made demands . a full THIRD of mattels profits come from Barbie. i wouldnt be surprised if they put the foot down and THATS why we got what we did. for example the "just ken" song, the BEST thing in it, was meant to be a much smaller affair and it was mark ronson coming in with slash from G'N'R with gosling insisiting on singing it that cause a big rewrite on it, and gerwhig wanted to do a barbie opera bit where theyre all farting that got kicked because the powers that be said NO. I felt like I wanted to be with a white woman growing up in NZ in the 80's. To love and mutually support one another in a warm and healthy relationship of mutual and complimentary give and take. The longer I kept looking for such a warm and lovely woman, the more I came up empty. I never gave up until I matched up happenstance with a Thai lady at a colleagues weekend party. Then I found her, warm smiling beautiful - she taught me things in bed. Lovely lady. From that time onward I gave up and forgot about western/white women. I switched over to south east asian women and never looked back. In NZ I'm a 2, in Asia I'm a 10. I've had mothers approach me and present their lovely daughters to me. I'm a 10, a chad in Asian countries. I would never get that response in NZ. Infact, I'm up there in Germany too with blonde hair and tall. They loved me in the Hoftbrauhaus, like they wanted me to lead them. And I love Germans too, in kind.

Everyone in my pink-wearing theater ended up laughing and enjoying Ken's scenes, but as soon as America Ferrera and her daughter were onscreen, the fun stopped. At the end of her "impossible to be a woman" rant, only one person in the back gave a light clap that quickly faded when no one else joined in. At the end when "order" is restored to Barbieland, Ken is instantly denied a spot on the supreme court, with the narrator scolding that "only when women in the real world have as much influence as they do in Barbieland"... do they somehow not know we've had women on the supreme court for over 40 years now?

If the satire was intentional, hats off to Greta for an actually intelligent satire of any extremist movement. A double meaning behind every commentary of society. @ohifonlyx33
@ohifonlyx33 11 ай бұрын
I mean, I think she intends it a bit as both sincere and satirical. The more extreme portrayals of matriarchy and patriarchy definitely come off as satirical. But there's a thread within the tapestry that feels human and sincere. There's a branch of slightly-less-insane feminists who *claim* they don't hate men, that feminism should "actually" help men too, etc. And I bet Greta is in that camp where she was trying to criticize both rabid man-hating feminism AND the MRA movement, while still being unable to let go of certain feminist ideas that have been ingrained into modern society. Like, they literally re-enact the sexual revolution by distracting the men, making them jealous, and "deprogramming" the Barbies. And on the one hand, the movie justifies it as the "right thing to do" because "the Kendom" took over. But on the other hand, the movie seems to kinda realize how awful that looks, because the Kens repeatedly sing about how hurt they've felt by Barbies, and even Barbie kinda feels bad for a few seconds. Things like that pop up where's just enough tongue-in-cheek self-awareness in the movie, that makes me think Greta was likely trying to criticize both rabid man-hating feminism AND the MRA movement, while still being unable to let go of the "independent female empowerment" message. But then again, they literally re-enact the sexual revolution by distracting the men, manipulating their love, and "deprogramming" the Barbies by complaining. So it's hard to call that satire. Oh, and thrown in there somewhere is also a sincere message about the beauty of the mother/daughter bond that actually cuts against the satire of little girls bashing babydolls and Midge being discontinued. But it coes off as a little confusing since they kinda already told men they're superfluous. And rather than fully commit to the satirical read of the movie, Greta has to keep Barbie as an independent woman who don't need no man. Heaven forbid men and women need each other and that Barbie and Ken could be in love and happy together. And her solution to the unhappy Ken problem is to tell Kens to get over it and go ride horses or whatever... Although, to be fair, telling men to go be themselves and stop simping so hard over women who don't love them is also some good advice. So maybe the sequel will be "Barbie & Ken" and it will be about how lonely they are and how much men and women need each other (if they don't just make everyone gay and lesbian).

If you check the low RT audience scores for Oppenheimer ( there were not that many ) you'll see a few people that left the theater after the first hour, because they were being bored to death.

The opinions generally are all over the place on this one. Not the slightest interest in seeing it but there's no denying it's pulling in the audiences so plenty of people do have an interest. I liked a specific scene in the barbie film. When Barbie takes Ruths hands and experiences human emotions. How the emotions were portrayed as colours and with the images. Barbies' reaction to this human experience struck an emotion cord in me. How the emotional colours mixed together. It was nice and a serious message about the human experience, that it's hard being a human, never mind about being male or female. Then the next scene ruined it lol, always end on a joke doesn't always work. I find it mad that there was a father in the barbie film. The mother seemed to me to be struggling single mother. Then they portray the father being utterly out of it learning another language rather than helping to raise their daughter. In my opinion the film was incoherent and everywhere. I went with my partner and her female friends; they all came out of it confused and really disliking what they saw. Just my thoughts.

The overall story arc is Barbie realizing she had been doing to Ken exactly the same things women in the real world had been complaining were being done to them. Barbie and her posse even stated they had been bad people repeatedly. Ken's version of "patriarchy" was to slap horses on everything, clearly trivializing the idea. Much like "manbearpig" trivialized global warming. These are fundamental structures of the story, not just jokes that landed wrong. The greatest irony is every woman watching the movie would be Ryan Gosling's housewife and wear nothing but an apron an a smile in the kitchen for him. The movie really is unintentionally hilarious.

You’ve nearly got it. The satire was intentional. The moral of the story was supposed to be that neither extreme works, whether it’s female supremacy, or male supremacy, and it’s told through the perspective of what a child’s toy would see those two extremes as. What Barbie learns in the real world is empathy; looking outward and seeing other people’s feelings. When she’s asked “where do the Kens live?” she thinks about it and feels bad. She apologizes to Ken in the end. Also, I don’t know how so many reviewers miss the part in the end when the narrator said “Kens would go on to hold as many positions of power as women in the real world” which if we believe we live in an equal society, they would end up with parity, working together. By the way, I was quiet when I wasn’t laughing because I was listening. If men also relate to America Fererra’s speech on how hard it is to be a woman, I think that’s great. It wasn’t particularly aimed at men, but we should be able to empathize with each other on how hard life can be and that sometimes, we share the same social struggles. While I was a bit disappointed that Barbie and Ken didn’t get together in the end, I see why they had to separate because Ken is still discovering himself and Barbie matured out of Barbie Land. Hopeful they might find each other again in a sequel. As a final note, Barbie Land wasn’t set up to be the ‘perfect intersectional feminist utopia’ so much as it was a representation of Barbie as a brand and how kids play with the dolls. Like the example in Ryan Gosling’s interview with GQ when he talked about how his daughters left the Ken doll outside, facedown in the mud. I do believe the faux feminist overglaze was intentional satire, especially because of the out of touch faux feminist Mattel execs.

@SchemingGoldberg 11 ай бұрын
I've seen the interviews with the writer (Greta Gerwig). It was NOT intentional satire. Greta is 100% a super radical far-left feminist. Any satire is completely accidental and unintentional.

Male ‘supremacy’ brought us the Industrial Revolution and the Cultural Enlightenment and built civilisation from caves until the moon landings. The current matriarchy has brought us moral decay, mass surveillance, big government, a competence crunch, puking fertility rate and a dying globo-homo culture.

@@emptyblank099a It’s true the movie isn’t very subtle, but unfortunately, it seems to be too subtle for a fair few people. They can’t help viewing everything through the lens of their own ideology, they miss messages of peace from their perceived enemy. I don’t doubt that they believe what they’re saying. It’s sad seeing multiple commenters saying ‘most (as if they’ve taken a poll) women are too stupid to see it’s satire and will take the feminist utopia seriously.’ I just want to tell them all ‘honey… you’re the one taking it seriously.’

Shoe0nHead made a similar review about the Barbie movie on how turned out to be unintentionally based. I haven’t seen the film as i still believe it’s woke indoctrination but I also agree with this take as it exposes how flawed the matriarchy aka Barbieland is and how the Kens are like slaves to the system as they have no purpose other than be a simp to Barbies. That changed when Ken went to the real world and experienced the patriarchy and brought it back to Barbieland and how it changed things for the better.

Barbie trips itself up, much like The Last Jedi, with the stupidity and total lack of self awareness with its messaging. In the Disney Star Wars film, Poe is relentlessly mocked and castigated by the supposedly smarter, more rational and composed Holdo and Leia, yet Poe's actions at the beginning of the film (destroying the Dreadnought) was the only reason why the two "leaders" were still alive.
@cmc5394oparva

Honestly, the biggest problem with the Poe/Holdo dynamic is that Holdo is playing "I've got a secret" for no good fucking reason at all, especially from one of her most high-ranking officers. You can tell Johnson had no fucking idea how a military chain of command works just from that interaction alone.

I've heard a lot of comparisons made between the Barbie movie and Starship Troopers. Starship Troopers is trying so hard to subvert and mock the message of the book that it accidentally ends up making it look good, kind of like how Barbie presents feminism is such an absurd and extreme way that it makes it feel like a satire of feminism. Now I want to see it for myself, not as a hate watch, but with an open mind.

Yeah, I know the media is crawling up Gerwig's ass about this movie, but the problem is that she went so over the top that's it's not hard to treat it ironically like a critique of late-20th century feminism, just as Verhoeven was so over the top with the anti-militarism that it became viewed as a goofy but fun sci-fi action movie.
