I get the feeling, reading through the comments, that a lot of people missed the point of the comment "Eating meat doesn't make you a bad person, and not eating meat doesn't make you a good person". The point is that if you try and make people out to be "enemies" and make an "us vs them" mentality, you're going to have a much harder time trying to actually _talk_ to others and help them understand your point of view. If you make someone out to be a villain, an enemy, opposition to what you say is "right and just", you're creating for yourself an uphill battle. Remember that the people eating meat, and the people not eating meat, are all still _people._ Calm down, try and relax a little. I assure you, it'll help. Remember that pointing out instances of others not acting in civil ways is not a good excuse for doing so yourself.

I am Vegan+ (I coined that term). Most of my diet is plant based but if I really feel like eating a steak - I select high quality meat, make an occasion out of it. That way I don't feel like missing out and I don't doubt whether I have enough B12 or not. My health has gone up amazingly and my grocery bills are pretty chill. This is how my great grandmother lived (because meat used to be a rich person's game back in her time) and she lived a long and fulfilling life... So, I am assured that it's not a life neceessity. I remember the village farmer coming over to our place to get drunk when the butcher came to town. He loved his animals - how could you not love those innocent creatures? But also had to allow them to be slaughtered... Maybe there was no alternative livelihood for him but I have about 1000 times more options on how I make my money

Most likely "live" animal meat will slowly be phased out; demand for it will reduce, due to increased demand for lab grown meat when the quality goes up and price starts to come down. Any left over animals that nobody wants to slaughter for meat will wind up in farm sanctuaries, which already exist. I work at a steakhouse. I literally cannot express the amount of meat that gets wasted. And, it isn't the restaurant doing the wasting, its the guests. Steak snobs are a real thing. Someone orders a steak, they want it cooked absolutely perfect. Even just a slight variation in the color of the steak will have them saying "send it back, bring a new one." Its almost as if they are proud of it. They flat out refuse to even try a bite. I get it, you order something one way, that's what you should get. If you order any plus temperatures at a steakhouse (medium rare plus, medium plus) you are a steak snob. I promise you that if you were blindfolded and tried a medium versus a medium plus steak you would not be able to identify between the two. My point is, try actually TRYING your steak before you send it back.

That’s what I decided to do after long ethical contemplation of eating meat. I love the taste of good steak, greasy bacon, or the occasional game meat, so I don’t want to quit them. At the same time, I feel responsible for the planet and care about my health, so meat-rich diet is not an option. I decided to treat meat as (well…) a treat. I try to eat it less often than twice a week, generally once a week. As I 'use' much less meat, I can afford to buy the best (both in quality, as in animal treatment) meat available. I don’t lose one of my favourite kinds of food, but at he same time I make a difference. A very, very tiny one, but still. Few my friends are hunters and I consider also starting to hunt. Maybe then I could switch to eating only meat I hunted myself, but I don’t know yet TBH.

Back then when I was growing up overseas, we bought our meat at wet markets and we watched (most times) the slaughtering (usual quick slash to the neck or a quick pound to the head) by the seller. We don't buy one pack of breast or one pack or wings, we just buy one chicken or fish, or one/few parts of the pig (no multiple packed cuts). We eat all parts of the animals, from head to tail, from intestine to blood. I know the world is a different place now but it sends a shiver down my spine every time I see neatly packed meat parts (like the 24 packed wings) in the supermarket. I don't get the super moral bits of killing things as most animals are omnivores (we kept chicken and they would eat worms, insects, smaller animals and...their own kin if given the opportunity) but if I am going to consume another life to fuel my own life I'd rather consume its entirety if possible. Food waste is worse than eating meat on my moral scale.

@BringCosby7 ай бұрын
Packaged meat doesn't mean waste. The corporations behind commercial meatpacking use the waste. Well, they sell it to people who put value on it (hence buying it, lol). There's some waste, but honestly, it's probably less waste than your family leaves, since they're using parts deemed inedible to humans to be part of animal food, fertilizers, biofuels, etc.

Lab grown meat is something very interesting. Its not a chemical or gmo thing as many think. What actually happens is that a piece of muscle is grown. Instead of growing an animal, and discecting it for its muscle flesh, we just grow muscles directly! This technology in theory works for organs too!!! So, technology for growing meat, instead of animals, is also technologie for organ replacements, healing and medicin! Definitely a field of technology that should be invested in!!! They even revently grew, cooked and served meat in this method. And, while it was only a small thin slab, i still was a absolut success!! Yay for the future!

I don’t think it’s about winning an argument, it’s about the truth of the ‘meat’ and ‘dairy’ industries treatment of animals. There is no justification for the abuse and ultimate death of sentient beings for food, when there are plant based alternatives. I was indoctrinated into the system but for the last two years have been wholly plant based. I feel better for not causing anymore harm to animals consciously, and ultimately the health benefits gained are exponential. But for me it’s the animals that matter...
@hesteredwards80506 жыл бұрын
Well the thing is, that sometimes you need the aggressive fundamentalists to make a difference. I could use the example of the suffragettes, but I won’t because some people think that they were not necessary to the gain of women’s suffrage. But actually a significant amount of the vegans were swayed, at first, by aggressive shouting and stuff like that. But definitely not everyone. I was swayed by a sticker on the tube for Veganuary.

A few things left out. Farmed fish are fed with about 5x their weight in wild caught fish, which are caught in huge miles long fishing nets in the ocean. The land used by beef directly contributes deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. All animals are fed with soy from deforestation, including those that claim "grass fed". The land used for milk and cheese per calorie is greater than that used for chicken or pork. Red meat production however uses far more land than any other food.

As a vegan, I couldn't agree more. There's a place for activism; but this information needs become mainstream... I mean, vegans have been saying all of the same things this video did for years, but even the word vegan just triggers people enough not to listen. That being said, think a little about the conclusion of the video! If you disagree with something morally and know there are better options, is reducing by 1 day a week REALLY enough to align your actions with your morals? It's a fantastic stepping stone and if everyone did it, it would have a big impact. And to be honest, I did this myself (reduced animal products to limited meals, days per week, and eventually vegetarian), but from there the logical transition is to completely or at-least almost entirely animal product free because that's just where my morals sit... I decided my actions should at-least reflect that the vast majority if not all of the time. I hope that people can see it the same way too (but I also respect that not everyone is there yet or agrees, and that's fine).

"If you want to eat meat produced with less suffering try to buy from trusted producers with a good track record. Even if costs more. To make an impact on the environment go for chicken and pig rather than lamp and beef as they convert their feed more efficiently into meat." @ 6:55 - 7:12 No one in this video put a gun to anyone's head and said they had to be vegan.

Danger Pear If I am being honest, this video while it is very fair and ‘neutral’ it is largely speaking an education video on why humans treat animals bad. It is a little biased against meat. I love meat btw. But I wont say it is completely neutral, since that would be impossible due to innate bias Hell, you said and the video said “not eating meat doesnt make you a good person and eating meat doesnt make you a bad person.” Setting aside this one statement, the video portrays factory farming in a bad light while ignoring lab grown meat or free range meat largely as a topic, probably because most of our meat is made in cruel factory farms. Which is unethical Because the video explains it so Is it really neutral since it explains the majority of our meat is made this way? Care to explain some more points I missed? (Not trolling, legit question to you.)
@Sensiav7036 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's entirely neutral, but not for lack of effort. The only major flaw is that they focused too hard on the environmental and ethical angle, and not even touching on how business and government forces are ensuring its continuation in its current form. For example, it's not that people are eating meat just because meat is good, but because meat is also a lot more affordable for the average person compared to any other food group, at least in the West. Poor people in the West have diets high in meat, especially fatty meats, because of its affordability and lower perish rate compared to healthier options. Incidentally, this is also a reason why the obesity epidemic primarily affects the poor. This video should get a part 2 to touch on the more pragmatic issues surrounding this topic.

Why? They literally said in the video "eating meat does not make you a bad person, and not eating meat does not make you a good person". It takes a lot of land to grow food regardless if you eat meat or not. Besides the health benefits to being a vegan are close to none and or are controversial. We became as intelligent as today by having a varied diet, meat and plants. If we only ate plants, we wouldn't be as smart as we would be today. We need both.

Ok so meat is bad. What do we do about the livestock if we stop eating meat? If we begin by adhering to ethics, we lose land and additional crops in order to house them. If we cull them, we end up with an excessive we can’t use due to our global diet change. And we can’t use them to feed the others animals due to the shear volume of our livestock. We could cull the population for animal food slowly, but that’s too slow and the diets of animals vary. tldr: Even if we all go vegetarian, we still face the same issue. It’s better to moderate meat intake and reduce til it’s manageable for the planet

@2341 5h4m3 everything you eat has an effect on environment, yes, but there are huge differences as to what extent. To feed an omnivore takes 18x more land than a vegan. Also a lot more water. It takes up to 25x more plants to "make" 1kg of meat (depending on the quality). Humans can live healthily without slaughtering animals, why shouldn't we then. And no, the environment is not going to be fine at all, 97% of scientists agree that present climate change is human made. We already see the effects in many parts of the world. If you don't care about your future, at least try to care about that of your descendents, should you (ever) have any. If you are open-minded enough, please watch "cowspiracy" for environment, or "dominion" if you really think you don't care about animals. And I also think there is a god, and I believe he is very displeased with how we are destroying his creations, fellow animals and our and their home planet.

Another thing is, the OGM in this world are feed for the animals, not for humans, so we are using soo much land(as you said) not for us but for animal stock. Another thing, yeah a lot of grain is waster(not only grain but you understood), but more and more is gived to animals for feed them that will feed us. 12 g of veg protein do 1 g of animal protein. Here is the transcript of this video, if anyone was looking for one: "Humans love meat. Steak, fried chicken, bacon, pork belly, and sausages are just the best things! Eating meat has become so trivial that many people don't consider something a proper meal if there's no animal involved. Which is pretty amazing, since only a few decades ago, meat was a luxury product. Today, you can get a cheeseburger for a dollar. Paradoxically, meat is pretty much the most inefficient way of feeding humans. If we look at it on a global scale, our meaty diet is literally eating up the planet. Why is that and what can we do about it, without giving up steak? Humans keep a lot of animals for food. Currently about 23 billion chickens, 1.5 billion cattle, and roughly 1 billion pigs and sheep. That's a lot of mouths to feed, so we've transformed earth into a giant feeding ground. 83% of its farmland is used for livestock. For example as pasture, and to farm fodder crops; like corn and soy. That's 26 percent of Earth's total land area. If we include the water we need for these plants, meat and dairy production accounts for 27% of global freshwater consumption. Unfortunately, meat production is like a black hole for resources. Since animals are living things, most of their food is used to keep them alive, while they grow their tasty parts. Only a fraction of the nutrients from fodder crops end up in the meat we buy in the end. Cows, for example, convert only about 4% of the proteins and 3% of the calories of the plants we feed to them, into beef. More than 97 percent of the calories are lost to us. To create one kilogram of steak, a cow needs to eat up to 25 kilos of grain and uses up to 15,000 liters of water. Animal products are guzzling up tons of food, but they only make up 18 percent of the calories humans eat. According to projections, we could nourish an additional 3.5 billion people if we just ate the stuff we feed to animals. To make our favorite food group even more unsustainable, about 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans are created by the meat industry. As much as by all ships, planes, trucks, and cars combined. And... there's another aspect to meat. It comes from actual living beings. Pigs, cattle, and chicken are not the ones writing the history books, but if they were, humans would appear as rampant genocidal maniacs, that thrive on suffering. Globally, we kill about 200 million animals every day. About 74 billion a year. This means that every one and a half years, we kill more animals than people have lived in the entire 200,000 year history of humanity. One could argue that we're doing them a favor. After all, they wouldn't exist without us. We might eat them in the end, but we also provide food and shelter, and the gift of existence to them. Unfortunately, we're not very nice gods. A lot of our meat comes from factory farms; huge industrial systems that house thousands of animals. Engineered to be as efficient as possible, they have little regard for things like quality of life. Most pigs are raised in gigantic windowless sheds, and never get to see the sun. Sows are kept in pens too small to turn around, where they give birth to one litter of piglets after another, until it's their turn to be turned into bacon. Dairy cows are forced to breed continually, to ensure their milk supply, but are separated from their calves hours after birth. To fatten up beef cattle for slaughter, they're put in feedlots: confined pens where they can't roam and put on weight more quickly. To make it possible to keep them so tightly together without dying of diseases, the majority of antibiotics we use are for livestock. Up to 80% in the US. Which helps in the short term, but also fuels antibiotic resistance. But the ones that may have got the worst deal are chickens. In factory farms, they're kept in such vast numbers and so close to each other, that they can't form the social structures they have in nature, so they start attacking each other. To stop that, we cut their beaks and claws. Male chickens are deemed worthless since they can't lay eggs and are not suitable for meat production. So within minutes after birth, they're usually gassed and shredded in grinders. Several hundred million baby chickens are killed this way each year. Even if you had a personal score to settle with chickens, how we treat them is beyond broken. So, better buy organic meat where animals are treated nicely, right? Organic farming regulations are designed to grant animals a minimum of comfort. The problem is that "organic" is an elastic term. According to EU regulations, an organic hen still might share one square meter of space with five others. That's a long way off from happy farmyard chickens. Farms that sincerely do their best do exist of course, but meat is still a business. An organic label is a way to charge more money, and countless scandals have revealed producers looking for ways to cheat the system. And while organic meat might be less cruel, it needs even more resources than conventional meat production. So buying organic is still preferable, but does not grant you moral absolution. The truth is, if suffering were a resource, we would create billions of tons of it per year. The way we treat animals will probably be one of the things future generations will look down on in disgust. While all these things are true, something else is true too: steak is amazing; burgers are the best food; chicken wings taste great. Meat satisfies something buried deep in our lizard brain. We hardly ever see how our meat is made, we just eat it and love it. It creates joy, it brings us together for family meals and barbecue parties. Eating meat doesn't make you a bad person, not eating meat doesn't make you a good one. Life is complicated, and so is the world we've created. So, how should we deal with the fact that meat is extremely unsustainable, and a sort of horrible torture? For now, the easiest option is opting out more often. Taking a meat-free day per week already makes a difference. If you want to eat meat produced with the less suffering, try to buy from trusted producers with a good track record, even if it costs more. To make an impact on the environment, go for chicken and pig, rather than lamb and beef, as they convert their feed more efficiently into meat. And if you're going to have your steak, you should eat it too! An average American throws out nearly a pound of food per day, a lot of which is meat. In the future, science could get us clean meat. Various startups have successfully grown meat in labs, and are working on doing so on a commercial scale. But solutions like this are still a few years away. For now, enjoy your steak, but also respect it. And if you can, make it something special again. We have something else that is also special, and tastes even better than steak. We get asked a lot about how we make our videos, we thought we'd just show you. Kurzesagt teamed up with Skillshare, our favourite online tutorial service, to teach you our unique animation style.
