Which didn't stop them from making some pretty bombastic statements about how much better vaping is than smoking, going so far as to actually recommend vaping to smokers. There was a time when we thought smoking was relatively harmless too. I have a feeling they'll be reissuing this video with updated information like a few others of the past.
@claudebbg21 сағат бұрын
Well, when someone highlights papers without checking their validity, it's not surprising to find a lot of unknown. For example stating a risk on metals without checking that daily exposure is below regulatory limits in the air… like the other compounds cited. Or not understanding that boiling is indeed a fixes temperature, unlike cooking the same substances and appreciating the delicious smell in the kitchen.
@claudebbg21 сағат бұрын
@@McP1mpin yeah, bombastic to repeat what health authorities in multiple country recommend… because it's the scientific consensus. And yes they'll probably reissue some videos to explain how millions of smokers died thinking vaping isn't 20-100x safer.

Ive been an avid smoker for almost 30 years tried quitting three times before, always relapsed until i purposefully decided to give vaping a go. Im pleased to report that i am now smokefree and vapefree for about 3 years. I just lowered the nicotine dosage in the juice until it was zero and a few weeks after didnt even feel like vaping anymore. Easiest addiction kicked ever, atleast it worked for me. EDIT. Holy shit guys, thanks for all the support and comments. Never got so much attention on youtube before.

Glad to see Kurzgesagt continuing giving us information without intentional bias. Great information. I vaped for a while but it made it hard for me to sleep. Now I only vape when I drink, if I remember to bring mine (I usually forget) or if someone has one and offers it. TBH I don't feel great when I vape without drinking. In any case, it is almost definitely miles better than smoking cigarettes and that's a good thing. While we humans have natural weaknesses that we need to be careful of. We should learn about our weaknesses so we can mitigate or even overcome them. It might make sense to ease young people into things that trigger their natural weaknesses, but banning adults from engaging in things that humans are naturally weak against is wrong. Information not oppression.
@shadysack988416 сағат бұрын
Thats the point of taxing addictive goods like cigarettes. If it costs more it isn’t quite repressed enough to make a super big illegal market but it makes it harder to want the goods if they are more expensive.
@billyte126521 минут бұрын
@@shadysack9884 Taxing is also inappropriate because it reduces the value one gets from it. For those who get positive value from use, they get less positive value or are unable to get any value. For those who are negatively impacted, many will still use it but be even more negatively impacted, both from the use of the substance and financially. The appropriate thing to do is to ensure that people who need legal guardians (because they can't be trusted to make their own decisions) are given appropriate rules to follow in terms of use. Using the force of government to restrict full ass adults from doing things that only impact themselves is never appropriate. The appropriate way to handle adults taking things you think is harmful to them is to CONVINCE them. Give them information that you think shows them why they shouldn't do it. The decision will still be theirs, but hopefully the information will help them make a better decision for themselves. Sin taxes are just big brother oppression in the guise of a good samaritan.

One time I bought a Chinese pre filled cart out of desperation, by the time I reached the bottom a week or two later I had noticable shortness of breath and a cough. What we need is extremely tight regulation of these products, regardless of other factors.

Another ex-smoker. I was 11 when I had my first cigarette, and having lived in a smoker's household - I didn't cough upon my very first inhale. It wasn't until my 30s before I finally decided to go to vaping in a desperate attempt to quit, and I went all in. It immediately was the better alternative, instant relief, had the punch to the lungs I was craving for, and I could adjust the amount of nicotine along the way. Started at 36+ mg nicotine, and down to 6mg after several years. The plan eventually being to quit vaping altogether as well. Keep it up. My wife and I got refillable tank devices and got 0 nic juice. Then get the nicotine only juice. Mix it up and do the math so you know how much you’re using. Get to where you like it and slowly lower it. Eventually we got to where it was a drop or less per 30ml juice bottle. Then do zero and eventually you don’t really get and pleasure from it. Then just stop. It takes some discipline but it’s the easiest way to quit I promise. Go for it! FYI - it’s hard to jump from 3 to zero. Have to do it slowly and you barely notice it.

I couldn't get past the inhale. so when I hit 0mg, I chose to get addicted to nicotine pouch. and it worked immediately at getting over the inhale bc it was nicotine levels I hadn't had in years. and getting off zyn is so much easier bc u have nicotine gum, and u put it in ur gums like a nicotine pouch, then u just switch to regular gum.

One thing about this channel I rarely see get a shout out in the comments is the sound design, everything from the music to the sound effects is top tier. I can't tell you the amount of Kurgesagt videos that have given me immense feelings of dread, profundity, joy or whatever purely based off an epic soundtrack in the background. The rising tension, slowly reaching crescendo as they go over some dreadful facts about our world just deepens the emotional impact of what they're saying tenfold. The nuclear weapons video really had some amazing sound design, the video where they talked about how many of us watching will be dead in a year had this creeping soundtrack that heightened the existential dread to unparalleled levels, and that's just off the top of my head. Just thought I'd give the birds some love! Everyone talks about their animations-which are to die for-but the sound team deserves just as much love!

I have realised that to appreciate the music, or even notice it outside of the music listening context, you need to have some technical understanding of how music works. To analyze the audio track, it requires additional attention, yet even when you are unaware of all the technical aspects, the music will influence your emotional state. Sound design in the most underappreaciated aspects of the media, yet one of the most important.
@tylercampbell2362Күн бұрын
@ @ super interesting observation! Music has always been a huge part of my life, from when I was a kid music has been by far the most important media to me in terms of emotional connection, depth, and impact. I’ve played instruments as well as worked in music production quite extensively for decades now so what you said totally tracks in my case! Music directly ties into my emotional state in terms of both how it can effect it and what type of music I engage with depending on how I feel, and with each stage of my interest and knowledge of music progressing-from learning different instruments, to learning how to record, to learning how to produce mix and master-I can pick up more nuance, detail and appreciate them more and more and hear them with more clarity as well as hear tidbits U never noticed before. You’re absolutely right it completely changes how you fundamentally absorb music/audio design in general and all the beautiful nuances within it. Super interesting point, mate! Couldn’t have said it better myself. I often find myself wondering how things would sound if I could listen to it with “virgin ears” lol

yeah, but if you think about it a second it's not that wierd, anything other than air shouldn't be in your lungs. That's how mother nature made them, the lungs are like your stomach but for gases, you don't eat lead and dangerous acids so why should you breath it? Sure inert gas doesn't react chemically with your body, but then there is no reason to inhale it, other than changing the pitch of your voice ofc.

A few tipps for quitting. The best time to quit is today and not at a set date because it keeps you a door open. Nocotine gums worked for me to bridge the first two weeks but I think that this can be only a very short substitute on the way to quit entirely nicotine. However i know that this is hard so you have to find a way for yourself. It helped me a lot to shut the door as much as possible. Throw everything you have related to nicotine away. Tell your friends that you quit so that you feel a bit observed. Make a ritual out of it like write a comment every day on this video when you

Write a comment every day on this video when you defeated another day. And make yourself clear why you are quitting. Maybe write it down so you can remember yourself. If you have an intense craving, take yourself 5 minutes and drink water. And finally be easy on yourself during the first weeks. If you want to eat something special, buy it from the saved money. It is good to make sport because it reduces the stress but if you don't feel like, just don't do it during this time. Reduce your stress level when possible in all other areas and focus on not to smoke.

I really appreciate your position here. I'm an ex-smoker who switched to vaping, and I can confirm it's a whole lot better for you. I'm glad you made it *abundantly* clear that smokers should switch to vaping immediately. But I also appreciate that you didn't sugarcoat anything. I'm still vaping, mainly because I have other addictions and life problems to fix first. Vaping is quite a bit lower on the list of shit that might kill me right now. I'm just SO TIRED of being made to feel like some kind of amoral monster for vaping. I got other shit I'm trying to deal with, and the nicotine makes it easier for now. Once the other challenges are taken care of, I'm going to stop vaping again. Stopped for a while, but started again because I kinda suck at dealing with stress. EDIT: I should clarify something. The reason we tell smokers to switch to vaping immediately is to get them away from the massively more harmful tobacco smoke. Even if their nicotine addiction worsens, they will be better off without the constant flood of carbon and shit into your lungs. This DOES NOT MEAN VAPING IS IN ANY WAY GOOD FOR YOU. *IT IS MOST DEFINITELY STILL HARMFUL. VAPING IS BAD FOR YOU.* I'm kinda sad I even have to do this, but I guess I need to be even more clear.

As an ex smoker/vaper though, I feel like there should be a nuance added to the argument of quitting nicotine altogether through vaping, because I personally was way more addicted to nicotine through vaping than smoking. I'd never go beyond 1-2 packs of cigs a week, but I was chain-vaping 24/7 because of the convenience and lack of perceived detriments (smell, tar, etc). I personally didn't succeed in quitting vaping by tapering off the nicotine contents all the way to 0 mg as others have. Ultimately, I only succeeded by switching BACK to cigarettes, feeling grossed out and tossing the pack. In a nutshell, it was easier for me to quit cigarettes than vaping. Everyone has a different journey/relationship with these substances and it should be specified instead of presenting vaping as a one size fits all solution to quitting nicotine.

As someone who has vaped for the last 10 years, vaping was way better before nicotine salts got introduced. Before the Juul and other pods, you were usually a vape nerd who built his own coils and had a mod the size of your hand. Freebase nicotine was way harder to overconsume (even when blowing monster clouds, lol). I did end up switching to nicotine salts as I was coming off of another addiction and was trying to compensate the loss of that with vaping. What really bothers me about the pods is the amount of waste that the disposable pods cause. Each one has a rechargeable lithium battery that people just toss on the ground.

It's probably not a "little vice". We have a long history of putting stuff into our bodies before gathering info on how safe they are (asbestos, lead, plastic, nicotine, tar, etc.) The answer is rarely "not that bad". Waiting for science to catch up to commerce is an extremely dangerous strategy. Manufacturers don't care about your suffering and won't take any responsibility when it ruins your life. When you develop lung, heart, or brain problems, you'll be shocked at how ill-equipped the medical community is to help you. If you quit immediately, it'll be very hard work for a couple months now, but may possibly buy you decades of your life back. You don't get a 2nd pair of lungs; if you keep gambling them, you may have serious regrets before you know it.

I had the same experience. I once heard someone say that it takes 3 weeks to form a habit. True for us that it took 3 weeks to break a habit. I stopped counting the days around day 40. Checking now - it has been 181 days (5 months and 28 days) and whenever I see people vape, I'm just so happy I don't have to deal with the mundane shit anymore like getting eliquid on your tongue, dealing with spilt eliquid, using a cart/wick to its literal bitter end, keeping the thing charged, making sure it's part of your everyday carry items. That's just my annoyances with a pod system - don't get me started with the RBA drippers, sourcing good wicks and coils, dealing with ohms and resistances (actually a good thing to learn lol), worrying if an 18650 battery was legit, having an RBA Tank leak in your bag/pocket, using those dumb tiny screwdrivers etc. Damn, I don't miss that at all. It's just more bullshit to deal with and you absolutely know that there are morons out in the world who aren't dealing with that bullshit. So why should you? Happy we both quit.

What people are missing, is that there's no reason not to regulate flavors meaningfully allowing only reasonably safe ones. And there's no reason not to mandate flavorless base liquid to be sold and displayed as the first choice in every shop, and to regulate the kinds of coils that are used. It's extremely easy to do meaningful and substantial harm reduction with vapes, but no one seems to be interested in that. Single use vapes overflowing with god knows what to have the strongest flavor have no reason to exist, but this has nothing to do with what vaping can be

I second this! Been doing the tobacco-free nicotine pouches for years now, and I wonder how bad it is. I know some studies have shown that tobacco pouches are much less harmful than cigarettes, as the sheer fact of not inhaling toxic stuff decrease the risk of lung cancer to zero. Still, it can lead to mouth and esophagus cancer, but this was for tobacco pouches, not the flavored nicotine ones which I suppose would be even less harmful.

I'm so glad that you guys took a deep dive into this. Anti Vaping ads, paid for by the tobacco industry are such a mess that don't actually do anything to curb vaping. They're less than useless. It brings me back to an ad campaign that actually worked in reducing smoking back in the day, the "You don't always die from tobacco" ads that show how long term smokers have to live now. Thanks for just reporting the facts and keeping the weird shit out of it.
@mrkevintetzКүн бұрын
This is one of the best and most well rounded pieces I have seen on nicotine vaping. It's unfortunate that, aside of the long term studies we haven't had time to conclude, a lot of the available science has been poorly or inconclusively done, but Kurzgesagt can't do anything about that. There is a bit of editorialization that I think needs to be called out, though. To suggest that 'they made it taste like bubble gum to hook teens on nicotine' (paraphrasing) is ridiculous. Is that why bubble gum vodka exists? Or coolers? Or anything that is delicious and carries risk? No, It's because adults also like bubble gum, and things that taste delicious. It's no different with flavoured vapes. I own a vape shop that I founded with my Dad. We opened our store with the goal of doing for others what vaping had done for us, helping as many smokers as possible get off combusted tobacco. When I started vaping, the worker Insisted I start with a tobacco flavour because "It will be more like what you're used to" Well, what I was used to was disgusting, and I almost threw the whole thing out after one puff of that nasty stuff! It wasn't until I found a flavour called Mangabeys (a mix of Pineapple, mango and guava) that I was able to fully leave cigarettes behind, because I finally had something that was preferable to smoke. Also, you present the regulatory environment, and risks associated with lack of regulation, as well as the statistics on youth vaping, in a global manner, leaving it reasonable to assume they are globally applicable, but they aren't. Canada for example has fairly stringent regulations regarding vaping, including a cap on the strength of nicotine available. Youth vaping rates are coming down in Canada and have been for years. And even at their peak Never came close to a 25% daily use rate among school aged youth. Describing the youth situation as epidemic seems sensational when taking into account that those youth most likely to experiment or become addicted to nicotine through vaping are demonstrating themselves to be youth who engage in risk-taking behavior. I advocate against the unnecessary uptake of any addiction, but i suffered with an addiction to smoking in my youth, and wish I had had access to vaping (It didn't really exist yet) rather than cigarettes. As with any adult smoker, I would have been better off vaping, If i was going to be a nicotine addict anyway. It is not an epidemic, but it is a dilemma. I do appreciate the difficulty in making this content, the line that must be toed, and appreciate the honesty and sincerity when making comparisons in relative risk to consuming nicotine via combustion. Thank you.
@tactical_pandaКүн бұрын
Yeah I kinda had a problem with the "epidemic" framing at the end as well. You can't say you don't know if something is a problem yet and then call it an epidemic that needs to be solved lol. Tbf though that's kind of just my general outlook showing. I tend to hate social engineering even when there *is* solid evidence of outcomes almost everyone would agree to be massively negative, such as with reduced life expectancy and smoking, just on the basis that people should be allowed to make their own choices and self-determine their lives. Still, other than that it's a great and factual video that doesn't sugarcoat or demonize anything to suit anyone's agenda. As a rule of thumb putting stuff into your body *does things to it*.
