As a biomedical researcher I'm optimistic about visionary and costy ideas such as asteroid mining given how quickly technology has changed in the last years. In biology, the costs of reading DNA sequences of humans have dropped from over 100 Million dollars to 80 dollars within 15 years, scientists have developed techniques to precisely edit DNA in cells, and we learned to grow tiny "organs" called organoids in the laboratory which might be suitable for transplantation one day (I made a video about “lab-grown mini brains”). It will be so great to see what will happen in the future!
@MMMm-js2dh4 жыл бұрын
Awesome video about mini brains, really entertaining. I´ve always been fascinated by genetic engineering and when the quarantine hit I´ve started to look for something that I can do at home. And genetic engineering is the answer. I´ve looked all over internet and haven´t found any evidence that it is possible to do at home. If it´s possible to do something like genetic engineering at home can you tell me or redirect me to somewhere where I´ll learn about at-home genetic engineering?

Actually the metals we get from space would become worthless from the amount we would have from large scale mining. The more platinum we have, the more common it is. Thus lowering the price. In a business standpoint, it would cost way more to mine than you would make. But in terms of human advancemen, it would be invaluable. Priceless even

This is where Crown corporations come in (similar to state owned companies in countries outside the Commonwealth). In Canada most of the major resource and infrastructure developers started as Crown corporations because no one other than the government was willing or able to take the risk. These are also usually organised on a not-for-profit basis where, depending on the charter authorising it, any potential profits either went to reducing cost, improving service, into government coffers, or sometimes into a "legacy fund" of some sort. (Many of these were privatised in the late 80's, with a rapid decline in services and increase in cost following. Ironically, many of these are major providers of essential services so in times of strife the government still has to bail it out anyway without having the benefit of reaping the profits in good times. Air Canada is one of these former Crown corporations that were privatised and has had to be bailed out on numerous occasions.) One notable exemption to a crown corporation being made to fill a gap is several telecom companies that were privately owned but wouldn't take on the cost to provide service to remote areas unless they were granted a chartered monopoly for a given area, thereby guaranteeing a return profit. And before someone says monopolies are inherently bad, the major difference is that these are chartered monopolies they come with conditions, regulatory oversight, and can be revoked. It is likely that the country which to achieve asteroid mining first will be China because they're organised essentially like a nation sized company.

This video, plus the dyson sphere video proves that a kurzgesagt video game about civilization and space would be incredible. If you make a startup-page or something like it, i would definitely pre-order it

The fuel doesn't cost thousands for every pound/kilo lifted to space: Falcon 9 has about a 30:1 fuel to orbital payload in reusable mode, and fuel costs less than a buck a pound. What really costs is designing the hardware & building it: if a rocket takes $3 billion to move from drawing board to launchpad then after 100 flights you're still paying $30 million per flight in engineering time before you've bent the first metal, so at 30,000 lbs to orbit that's still $1000 / lb. Then you gotta actually build the thing and that costs too. SpaceX shook the world by having a lean design process which cost < $400 million for Falcon 9 v 1.0, incrementally more for each revision, and about $500 million for Falcon Heavy. They also reduce costs by using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts as much as possible, which means $62 million per Falcon 9 launch still returns a nice profit. It changed the business model from buying a Bentley and throwing it away after the gas tank emptied out, to getting a Chevy you can refuel over & over again (one first stage has flown at least four times): the cost per trip goes way down. Any decent sales guy can sell the hell out of the latter proposition, and whatever else anyone can say about Elon Musk the guy knows showmanship. This is where fully-reusable rockets come in: if the second stage can be reused as well then the asymptotic cost after a few hundred flights starts approaching the cost of operations & fuel, whereupon ticket prices start dropping drastically. Will Starship be the one? If not, now the formula's out there any number of competitors could crop up -- so long as they take their thumbs out (looking at you, Jeff Bezos).

@Pedro Broek The Space Shuttle launches worked out to be about $1.1 billion per launch. SpaceX does it for 1/10th the cost at around $100 million.

Great comment, but let’s say you make 100 rockets that will fly 100 times, instead of 1 that will fly 100 times. Then the cost/launch (of R&D) is not $30M anymore, but $300K...
