Arguing for inclusion based on feeling pity for those who are different is useless and damaging. Change will come more readily when everyone understands what they personally gain from inclusion. Joanna is an international sensory engagement and inclusion specialist, trainer, author and Founder of The Sensory Projects. The Sensory Projects share the knowledge and creativity needed for inexpensive sensory items to be used as effective tools for inclusion.
Chlöe Salfield is a student at Curnow school. She is a huge fan of music, particularly rock and punk. Chloe is self assured and confident. She will be sharing ideas about why arguments for inclusion should be based on what society stands to gain from including people. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My little sweetheart. She gave the wonderful Joanna a very loving cuddle and a beautiful kiss when Jo came and sat with us in the audience. Chlöe is the most awesome person I’ve ever met and she’s mine. I’m so very proud of her. Chlöe makes me smile and laugh every day. Love her to bits.

Your message that 'Pity has no useful function when it comes to inclusion' is really positibve and thought provoking. You made the statement that one thing people learn is 'how to function on less sleep' - what did you mean? Also, it is a 'pity' visuals and the slides were not described in audio or text, to include everyone.

Well, I kind of hope you don't include people to propagate pity, but maybe some of inclusion does happen because pity exists... But why would it?

Well, if you don't mean harm by it, then what do you mean?

As a parent of a sensory daughter I found this very moving. This young lady really understands our world. Having her highlight the need for Changing Places too is fantastic, as the need for these to provide dignity for the most vulnerable people in our society is essential. We don't want pity, but we do want to be able to be part of society when we are out with our daughter. And maybe someone to hold open a door now and again.
