I still personally don’t get why they didn’t just hire people with dwarfism to be the dwarfs, since it would give people with dwarfism a chance to shine in the acting world.🤨🐱

Yeah but unlike the LOTR trilogy, Disney doesn’t put effort into their live action remakes, they’re just cashgrabs. I know The Hobbit trilogy was absolutely a cash grab, and as someone who’s favorite book is The Hobbit I was very disappointed with the trilogy. HOWEVER, they still used the same camera techniques, and The Hobbit trilogy is still a million times better than every Disney live action movie combined so the point still stands.

Mmhmm. It also is sucky how it has to be like this even if there can be better. After all, some diversity was more balanced years ago, like with super teams like the Avengers and JLA would take with having Black Panther and John Stewart as their teams’ first Black heroes respectively over time, especially when both teams were made in the 60’s and how the times made it hard.

I'm so tired of people saying that the Prince from Snow White is a creep for kissing Snow White when he thought she was dead. People act as if he put his tongue down her throat while she looks like a regular corpse. Maybe I'm just more comfortable with death because of my upbringing. There's a European tradition that you would kiss dead people goodbye. You would also wait with a dying person because dying alone was one of the most horrible ways to die. In Poland, you would spend three days with the dead body of your relative in the house so family and friends have time to say goodbyes. We even have pictures of family members in coffins, so we could remember them.
@k1tty.cr1es

Yes!! Thank you for mentioning it! I'm from East Europe and we have many traditions when a person dies, especially one from our family / close relatives / friends. Keeping the person in the house before burying them and kissing them are normal traditions for us. Some americans found it disturbing and without a second thought began calling it "weird" and simply being disrespectful towards other people's cultures and traditions!

I love the logic these companies have, that picking people solely on their skin color, sexuality, ethnicity, etc. somehow makes them less bigoted. Uhmmm...no? You're still singling these people out for traits outside their control, as well as alienating them from others because of those traits. Also, the audacity of this woman! The original Snow White film is the whole reason Disney is as big as it is today! Walt Disney put his whole career and reputation on the line to make that film! She wouldn't be here if not for that film!
@Vossenator
@Vossenator 10 ай бұрын
Not to mention choosing a candidate based on skin, sexuality, ethnicity, etc instead of qualifications and skill actually hurts your company in the long run because the quality of your employees takes a hit. For example; a friend of mine worked for a company that hired a woman in a supervisor position not because she was the most qualified but because the women of the company were complaining that wasn't enough women represented in leadership. Guess what happened? She clearly wasn't the right person for the job. She was terrible and made lots of bad or questionable decisions that ended up costing the company hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I dont really mind when they change a characters race when their race doesnt matter or isnt part of the original story, a lot of movie roles for example dont have a race or sometimes even a physical appearance pegged down when they start casting or may make a role to fit an actor, and other times an actors skill makes it worth changing, but in situations like this its just stupid. They take a character with a world famous appearance that's been established for over 80 years in animation and centuries in the original folk tale, not because the actress was so amazing it made sense to change it to fit her but solely for virtue signaling. It's pretty blatantly pandering and since they're making their decision based solely off race it's also pretty racist. I get why Disney does remakes but they already have proven they can make good stories AND include diversity. The original Mulan provided us with an Asian "Disney princess" who was both a pretty good feminist character and an interesting character with an interesting story. Moana did the same with a Polynesian "princess". They can do the same with live action roles and be diverse without pandering or being racist but they took the lazy way out, and they know it will draw critcism but they just use accusations of racism as a defense. Also i kind of love how out of touch she is not realizing that the story isnt "very evidently from 1937" when it's very evident it's early modern/late medieval in aesthetic and the story is very evidently old. As a kid i knew the story was practically medieval and as an adult i learned it's downright ancient having its roots in the Roman Empire and Renaissance era Germany. Also claiming she was "afraid" of the story as a kid is possible but unlikely since most girls love the movie, especially since kids are really innocent so the idea of a dashing prince kissing them while they're asleep isnt viewed as a bad thing, it's only when you view it as an adult that ideas like kissing a random sleeping woman in the woods gives you date-rape vibes. Even then though that really only pops out if you view it as real life rather than as a fairy tale, and in fairy tale land our modern sensibilities and our logic goes out the window since it's a place where singing to wild animals will make them do your chores and where evil witches send woodsmen out to cut out random girls hearts and where you can just move in with a bunch of dwarfs.

I can live with Zegler not liking Snow White as a kid because she thought it looked scary. I can live with her not liking the prince that only has 5 minutes of screen time, I can live with her not liking romance stories but I can't give her a pass on spreading misinformation. A man notices a girl he finds attractive and then flirts with her right after noticing her and continues after she responds in kind. It's not stalking! JLongbone made a great response. Or how the Dwarfs living in caves is a harmful stereotype. Even tho the Dwarfs live in a cottage and they just work as miners. And Dwarfs from European folklore and people with dwarfism are two different things. It's so obvious these people haven't seen the movie ever or since when they were kids and if they see the movie recently they really weren't paying attention. If they want to bash the original can't they even make sure what they're talking about is true? It just shows how lazy those remakes are. Like she said, ''It's not 1930 anymore'', can't she do a Google search?

@@grildrago I don't think so. How do you not tell the difference between the Prince and the huntsman? Even the huntsman didn't stalk her. He was just given the order to kill her, so he took her to some far-away place under the pretense of picking flowers/having a nice day, and killing her but he couldn't because she's an innocent girl. He tells the truth, tells her to run, and tries to trick the queen by giving her a pig's heart. In unused scenes, he and the prince were put in a doggone and escaped together. The huntsman is kind of an MVP if they really wanted to ''fix'' the original they could've just added the scenes for the prince and the huntsman.

What is funny is that the OG Snow White is a well written character because she is the opposite of the evil queen, she is kind, gentle and optimistic. She is a great role model both to the dwarves in the movie and to the children that watch the movie. The movie shows you that if you are kind and optimistic you'll be able to live well and happy. I mean the evil queen was defeated by the dwarves because they cared for her and her acts of love and kindness is what lead to the evil queen's demise. The evil queen's death happened because of her spite towards Snow White being the fairest of them of all, which means beauty on the inside and out. The scene where the evil queen transforms into the old witch, it is a form of visual story telling revealing what the evil queen really looks like on the inside which is what makes her death more effective. She dies in her truest of form; ugly, spiteful and alone. Snow White is a great movie both in animation and story telling and by the way the prince was never a stalker, snow white was only frightened by him because he just came out of nowhere and so far she ran away because she fears the evil queen might harm him aswell.

This quote from Tumblr, courtesy of artist-issues, should sum it up nicely... Let me tell you a little something's about that "85-year-old cartoon," miss Zegler. *It was the first-ever cel-animated feature-length full-color film. Ever. Ever. EVER. I'm worried that you're not hearing me. This movie was Disney inventing the modern animated film. Spirited Away, Into the Spider-Verse, Tangled, you don't get to have any of these without Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937.) *It was praised, not just for its technical marvels, not just for its synchronized craft of sound and action, but primarily and enduringly because people felt like the characters were real. They felt more like they were watching something true to life than they did watching silent, live-action films with real actors and actresses. They couldn't believe that an animated character could make kids wet their pants as she flees, frightened, through the forest, or grown adults cry with grieving Dwarves. Consistently. *Walt Disney Studios was built on this movie. No no; you're not understanding me. Literally, the studio in Burbank, out of which has come legends of this craft of animated filmmaking, was literally built on the incredible, odds-defying, record-breaking profits of just Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, specifically. *Speaking of record-breaking profits, this movie is the highest-grossing animated film in history. Still. TO THIS DAY. In fact, it made four times as much money than any other film, in any other genre, released during that time period. It was actually THE highest-grossing film of all time, in any genre, until nothing less than Gone With the Wind, herself, came along to take the throne. *It was the first-ever animated movie to be selected for the National Film Registry. Actually, it was one of the first movies, period, to ever go into the registry at all. You know what else is in the NFR? The original West Side Story, the remake of which is responsible for Rachel Ziegler's widespread fame. *Walt Disney sacrificed for this movie to be invented. Literally, he took out a mortgage on his house and screened the movie to banks for loans to finish paying for it, because everyone from the media to his own wife and brother told him he was crazy to make this movie. And you want to tell me it's just an 85-year-old cartoon that needs the most meaningless of updates, with your tender 8 years in the business? *Speaking of sacrifice, this movie employed over 750 people, and they worked immeasurable hours of overtime, and invented--literally invented--so many new techniques that are still used in filmmaking today, that Walt Disney, in a move that NO OTHER STUDIO IN HOLLYWOOD was doing in the 30's, put this in the opening credits: "My sincere appreciation to the members of my staff whose loyalty and creative endeavor made possible this production." Not the end credits, like movies love to do today as a virtue-signal. The opening credits. *It's legacy endures. Your little "85-year-old cartoon" sold more than 1 million DVD copies upon re-release. Just on its first day. The Beatles quoted Snow White in one of their songs. Legacy directors call it "the greatest film ever made." Everything from Rolling Stones to the American Film Institute call this move one of the most influential masterpieces of our culture. This movie doesn't need anything from anybody. This movie is a cultural juggernaut for America. It's a staple in the art of filmmaking--and art, in general. It is the foundation of the Walt Disney Company, of modern children's media in the West, and of modern adaptations of classical fairy tales in the West. When you think only in the base, low, mean terms of "race" and "progressivism" you start taking things that are actually worlds-away from being in your league to judge, and you relegate them to silly ignorant phrases like "85-year-old cartoon" to explain why what you're doing is somehow better. Sit down and be humble. Who the heck are you?

Diversity hiring can be good when it's not purely based on a persons skin color/sexuality etc and takes their skill into account. There's a bunch of talented people in several industries that probably would've had a harder time getting in if it wasn't for diversity hiring (like the whole voice acting incident) but the difference is they're actually skillful and can do the work. Diversity is great but many companies think they can rely on that as a get out of jail free card as an excuse for not making good content. When really what their doing is hurting diversity in the industry

Thank you. This comment section was looking kind of scary so it's good to see a take like this. Some of the views I've seen others share here and on the internet in general show just how much Disney's lack of care can hurt diversity. As it seems that some people are seeing these bad examples of representation, and becoming hostile towards ANY representation. The worst part is, I doubt that all of them are aware of that fact. And I can't entirely blame them. As part of a marginalized group, I know what it's like to feel invisible when you see almost nobody who looks like you in the spotlight, or being highlighted for their worst moments. At the same time, some people generally don't have to confront this disconnect with their identity and the media they consume. So I can understand why it's easier to misjudge the importance of representation when you're not as directly confronted with a lack of it. I just hope that people continue to show some care towards the subject that Disney so woefully lacks. After all, it would serve everyone best to demand more genuine examples of representation, instead of turn their nose up at any attempt. Even I, as jaded by the company as I am, have to maintain some benefit of the doubt that they may still get it right.

In my opinion, why didn't Disney just make snow white as an albino if they wanna make it "diverse" so bad? It would've more fit her character, since her name is Snow White, which means her skin is as white as a snow.

The Batman had Commissioner Gordon, Carmine Falcone, and Catwoman all portrayed by black people when they were originally white and the movie still turned out good. Power Rangers since its inception was always diverse, having Black, Asian, Hispanic, and Polynesian people in its cast throughout the years. Throughout the past maybe seven years, I've learned that you can't force diversity. Companies like Blizzard and RoosterTeeth that brag about being "diverse" and "inclusive" are usually the most bigoted behind closed doors. I'm not gonna complain to racially homogenous companies about not having a diverse workplace as long as they do the job well and treat their employees and customers well (but honest diversity here and there wouldn't be too bad) The exclusion of people with dwarfism bugged me. There was an interview with Tom Kenny by Marc Maron about how he came up with the Spongebob voice, and it was based off of a really sad truth where the guy could ONLY work on Christmas because, well, elves are small. Wee Man of Jackass fame (who is also short) was interviewed by TMZ about Peter Dinklage's thoughts on the matter and basically called him a hypocrite. When you exclude one group to provide another, can you really call it diversity?

When they changed gordon his character wasn't defined by his blackness, when they changed catwoman now she had an anti white racism baked into the character. Harvey dent was still just a DA, his race didn't matter. Batman could be black, you just can't make the story about him BEING black. See what I mean? It's about him losing his family and becoming the world's greatest detective, but if you make it about race you get the MARVEL Max Nighthawk, who because he is black only fights for black people and only against white supremacists. This is why your examples need to be fleshed out and this is why raceswapping doesn't work. They change the entire character to be some sort of victim instead of letting them prosper. I've been all over Kansas. If you race swapped superman now you don't need the race baiting. He could just be a guy that had bullies like everyone else. You don't have to make Lex Luthor the head of the Klan, see what I'm saying?

I have to disagree as a practicing writer, since all characters to ever exist have had visual appearances to define them, especially if they were written by a writer. Ariel was depicted as having clear skin, white legs, and blue eyes in her original fairytale, yet people still act like her established appearance didn't matter, cause we need black mermaid representation in EUROPEAN stories. Superman as another example has always been a pale man with black hair along with blue eyes in a blue latex suit and red trunks, complete with his signature S on the chest. Characters don't need their race to be integral to their character, since they already have an established appearance. Barry Allen is a blonde white speedster in nearly all his appearances, meaning that's his established appearance. Ariel, Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, and Belle were all established as European women ranging from French to German in their appearances in Disney's movies and merchandise for decades. It annoys me when people don't acknowledge the visual appearance of a character and act like it is an interchangeable aspect, when it genuinely isn't, because that helps define a character in your mind.

Judging by how poor some of these recent remakes are and how lazy the writing is for many diversity hire roles in movies I'm guessing they're rock bottom. The way she's been acting in interviews and the limited bits we've seen it doesnt seem like shes very skilled, and as evidence by her lack of many roles so far in Hollywood she doesnt have much if any real acting experience either. A good example of skill getting an actor a role they dont fit physically are Samuel L Jackson's Agent Fury and Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox in Batman: both were originally white roles but the actors were so great they got the role anyways and Samuel L Jackson was so amazing they've made the character look just like Samuel L Jackson in cartoons and other media since.

If i may share a personal story relating to this... I recently graduated college, alongside a lovely islamic friend of mine, for Cybersecurity. We were both top-of-the-class students (I know this sounds like I'm bragging, trust me, there's a point to this) with very similar qualifications and skillsets. When we were applying for scholarships, we eventually came to the decision that, both to improve our applications and to test the extent to which this bias exists, we should work together to write our scholarship applications. By the time we sent them out, our scholarship applications were nearly identical (not copy-pasted, but had near-identical qualifications and experience), the only meaningful difference being that I was a white male, and she was an Islamic woman. I got 2 scholarships. She got over 30. While I was, and still am, incredibly proud of her since she absolutely deseved every bit of fiscal support she got, the fact that our race and gender were the only substantial difference in qualification is a bit telling.

One of my acquaintances is a black woman and she's also concerned that some people may end up hiring her bc she's black. Ironically, they don't recognize how much they're harming minorities in the process in at least both ways. The first is that some IT specialist who happens to be gay or a mestizo will be met with backlash bc people will automatically assume that him having a husband or being brown got him the job. The second is that while they claim to be supportive, they still end up highlighting our innate features (race, sex, orientation) and prioritizing them over our qualifications and personality.

What actually is most disturbing about Rachel’s statements is that she jokes that they could cut out all of the Prince’s lines, even mentioning her co-star by name and laughing about it. This is his livelihood, and she is making a joke about it. Disney, given how desperate for cash they are (and now that their stock is at a 9 year low), could write him out of the script and not pay him. But this sadly is a trend for Disney making their male leads irrelevant. Most often by taking the pivotal moments from the Prince and either giving it to the Princess (like Ariel defeating Ursula) or someone else (like Maleficent breaking Aurora’s curse). If they are going to do something like that, just cut him out of the movie, it will be a mercy.

In live-action, I see how physical attributes matter in terms of casting, unlike animation (seriously the idea you need to be the exact same identity as a character to VA them so you're not being offensive is once of the most bs things i've ever heard). There's a lot of people with acting skill that fit Snow White, but you'd have to find the one that best gives the physical impression of her to be the act most believable, representing one of the most memorable animated characters of all time. That's huge! They could've got an actor from Germany and also show a good bit of German culture, but this is a Disney remake we're talking about. Edit: I was intending to add this bit...skin color still doesn't affect me all that much in live-action. Acting comes with love and genuity, plus acting as someone you're not. But the reason this whole thing blew up was because of Zeglar's attitude. It's nasty, she doesn't even try to understand Snow White as a character and role model. At least Haille Bailey was pretty nice to people, certain comments aside, and you'd believe she'd be a princess (she would've truly shined as Tiana or a new Disney princess). But Rachel (idk the exact spelling, I'm on my phone)? She should be the queen and witch, let's be real. She talks nothing like a princess, she's looking forward to inserting herself into the movie instead of giving Snow White to the world, and that's not what an actor should do.

God, this age of Disney remakes have ZERO respect for the company's history and identity. Snow White was the first animated movie ever made. Sure, there have been animated cartoons before, but this was the first full-length film of said medium. Everyone criticized and had little faith in Walt Disney when he set out to do it. They said it would be his folly. But Walt and his talented team pulled it off, proving everyone wrong and creating something groundbreaking in the industry. Snow White made its mark on film history and started the Golden Age of Disney. Mickey Mouse is the face of Disney as a whole, but it was Snow White that cemented the company's place in the film industry for years to come. Without Snow White, there would be no Spiderverse, Spirited Away or Lion King. Without this beautiful eighty-five year old movie, we would have less beauty and imagination in the world.

I have autism and wanted to see some great autistic representation, but mostly in Hollywood they choose the smart autistic person trope which succs. The best representation fpr autism is when the creator and the person acting having autism or supporting autism with many small details that autistic people can relate aswell. If one day you ever felt like a loser, just remember that Disney made a remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but cast a brown person as Snow White (even though the name of the show literally refers to her skin color as being white) and one dwarf person for convenience, five normal-sized POC people, and one tall guy as the Seven Dwarfs, they also omitted Prince Charming from the original story and added something that was never ever mentioned in the story whatsoever: Adventuring the Independency. So be happy that an entire organization with their people are lower and stupider than your high intelligence.

So they are also taking away acting roles from people who have dwarfism? WTH. Willy Wonka also did this and there are multiple actors out there that would love to be hired. I never liked the remakes anyway so passing on this one too.

I think it was crazy that she just openly talks about her male co star like she could cut them out the movie on a whim....I wonder if shes taking notes from Mindy Kaylin.

Beyond just the movies, some of the rhetoric makes it obvious that a primary reason is to raise the bar of entry. Like some of the rhetoric you hear is, "You can't find someone of [trait] for your job?" implying that if the company doesn't have the LUXURY of having enough time and money to turn down qualified applicants until they find one of the sufficient minority status, that they shouldn't exist. Like you know how when Disney made Moana they had a ton of correspondence with various Polynesian communities to try and check over the movie to ensure that it wouldn't be offensive? What if some small studio wanted to make a piece of media based on Maui but it was just a small studio who couldn't do that - the most that they might be able to do is have some research on the things they want to portray and perhaps pay out of pocket for a trip to Oceania. There would be people who say, "You can't make this work that shows nothing but respect for a culture that isn't your own because you didn't hire any people from that background!" Even if they did everything that was reasonable for them, with their time and resources, to do and even if there was nothing in the work that was inaccurate to Maui's source lore.

Rachel Zeglers interviews - along with Brie Larsons interviews from 2018-2019 - remind me of a scene from “The Congress” (2013) where Robin Wright sees a aired “interview” with her digital persona that makes her look dumb. This movie predicted so many things.
