“Accept me as I am” should never be used to justify shitty, toxic behaviour. It’s the excuse abusers and toxic people do use to justify their terrible actions. The sentence has more meaning to it than giving power to people who have done nothing good to deserve that power. I don’t know how to word it better, but I’ve seen too many toxic people use this sentence to defend how shitty they are to others.

Honestly, this is a detail that'll escape most people, but if you want proof she's even more of an ungrateful brat, look at the cockatoo. It's probably either a citron cockatoo or a sulfur-crested cockatoo. Citrons are at least $700 while sulfur crested are at least $4000. It's possible it was an adopted bird, but if it was straight from a breeder, you're looking at really expensive birds. I'm pretty sure it would've had to have been Starfire buying the bird for her. Honestly, I feel bad for it. White cockatoos are incredibly sensitive birds to the point some parrot behavior experts think they shouldn't even be in captivity. Realistically, it may end up plucking itself from stress if Mandy doesn't have the time to spend with it or the ability to provide for it mentally. She's so self-obsessed that would probably be the case. Plus, she doesn't strike me as the type to do actual research on how to care for a parrot. I've been doing research for 3+ years into bird training and parrot care. I'm 30 and my family still won't let me get even a _cockatiel._ Why would you get a 17-18 year old a bird that can live to 60+ years old?! Teenagers are not prepared for that sort of responsibility! Well, some might be, but most aren't! That particular detail just baffles me so much.
@popstel22862 жыл бұрын
Yeah let's be honest the author probably just: 1. Google "pretty birds" because birds are hip and cool and use the first pretty result for the pet 2. Use to have a bird phase but her parent(s) wouldn't allow it for ovious reasonings (they live to be like 60+ sometimes, birds are very difficult to own or something, cages and stuff for the bird is hella expensive,...) so now she gives Mandy this giant fancy bird (possibly the one she wants when she was a teenager when she doesn't care about all the responsibility and crap) as a way to say: MOMMMM LOOK AT THIS, THIS BIRD IS MINE NOW MOMMMM FRICK YOUUUU lol But still, your comment was really good 👏👏👏👏
@ARDIZsq2 жыл бұрын
That's actually a really interesting observation. I'm sure it's just a small little detail the writer/artist didn't think about, but it's there now and it really says a lot about the character. It also makes sense that the rich and famous Starfire could afford such a pricey bird. Such a well researched and explained comment.

I’m SHOOKETH about the price of the bird! And the dubiousness of certain types of pet choices…

This is a detail I noticed too. Large parrots like this cockatoo I'm pretty sure need a much larger enclosure (basically their own room) that's at least something large enough to allow them to fly around OR they need to allowed out of the cage for most of the day SUPERVISED because they can and will destroy stuff. It's pretty obvious that the poor bird is stuck in that goth hellhole of a room in a small cage without social interaction for HOURS at a time. It's actually kind of amazing that the author could accidentally add another subtle layer of crappiness to Mandy...

@TheBelieveit12 жыл бұрын
Let us not forget also, in that nonsensical scene where she's "proving" that her mom can't read minds. All the while Starfire's trying to understand but Mandy's not saying anything directly but internally venting because she pretends to want to be understood but just expects everyone including her mom to just automatically know so she says nothing? Well, author, don't think I missed the part where she's talking to her bird and asking "Who's a smart girl?" and like the properly trained cockatoo the pet is, it says "You". She literally trained her pet to stroke HER ego. This isn't something these birds just do. You have to spend a lot of time TRAINING them to understand the desired response. Meaning that she would ask this question and ONLY when the bird gave THIS response to THIS question, did she reward it. That is really sick when you train a pet to do a "trick" simply as a way to stroke your ego because you feel the need to have this kind of verbal validation. Most people I've seen who teach their parrots (and similar birds) to talk, they will ask them similar stuff like "Who's a pretty girl" or "Who's a good boy" and the idea being they respond with either "me" or their name. And a lot of these tricks are taught (yes because they're tricks and it's neet for the owner if they pull it off) but it's a way to help stimulate the bird's social needs. But here, Mandy (and by extension the author) is using it PURELY to stroke HER own fragile ego. It wasn't for fun or enrichment. It was for a narcissists' need for self validation. That's messed up. Especially because the bird can't understand her in the way she wants her own mom to either, but because she refuses to even try opening up to her mom before this all happened, insisting that "she'll never understand" while just expecting her to understand anyway. Meaning she doesn't REALLY wanna be understood, she just wants endless praise. Mom doesn't endlessly praise her as being perfect all the time and instantly stroke that ego of her's at every chance, so she trained an animal that could NEVER understand her beyond "she gives me food when I do this" and we're expected to see her as relatable and pity her? Bruh, that's not a pet, that's more a servant.

Although the question is raised, although given that this is based off of the author rather than an actual proper character I guess you can’t really speculate, but let’s just pretend for a second that Mandy isn’t a self insert and say how old in the world did she develop this narcissistic personality to begin with? It could possibly because Starfire didn’t really know how to parent a young child? Or it could’ve been her peers that caused her to develop that narcissistic personality. In a world where this character isn’t a self insert those are some good questions to ponder. You can still say that Mandy’s absolute trash, but at least in that scenario she would be trash born from her developmental circumstances as a child rather than because it’s a self and start character and the other is by proxy also trash

I think the story would've been so much better if the point of the story was to have the main character be a complete asshole. In the first parts of the story, she just shrugs off people obviously trying to help her and tries to intentionally be terrible to people except people who are like her. But we get snippets of her mind. Maybe she is that way because she feels like she will never be able live up to being like her mother, and that would be the reason why she doesn't like mother and actively tries to not be like her. I would then make the relationship never happen. Although she likes the female lead, the female lead doesn't like her because she was mean to her friends. Then the darkfire thing would happen much earlier. Starfire comes in the nick of time and saves the day, with the mc never getting powers. But because of her mother saving her, she realizes that her mother does love her, and that she doesn't have to be exactly like her mother. The last part of the story would be her trying to mend the terrible things she's done, and her trying to get her life on track, because she realizes that she doesn't have to be like her mother to go through life. She can be unique without trying to prove it. And at the end, she doesn't get the girl, not many people like her, but she's confident in her own ability instead of what she thought was expected of her. I left out a ton of other story points, like why the battle happens at her school and other things but for me this is the easiest way to make the story much better and making the mc look better in the eyes of the reader. This was rushed so feel free to add anything else that you think would be better.

It's conflicting for me because I don't want to hurt people's feelings because I know what it's like to be hurt that way. But, admitting it to yourself that "Ugliness is Beauty" is BS it's also far better than making their lives more miserable by A) Outright mocking them for it B) Pretending they're beautiful as they are. It's actually very creepy if you think about it I mean she basically literally just made her "love interest" into a simp who just magically forgets being disrespected and just falls in love with her? With no actual build-up or anything? They didn't even go on a single date or have a single decent conversation it just comes off as one of those weird and dark NTR anime novels. I am starting to think people who write self-insert bullshit like this are doing it purposely to make the industry look bad and push an agenda because this shouldn't keep happening. Who is hiring these pandering morons? This whole book is just a rip-off of Twilight where it's just fanfic about someone's self-insert because she not only wishes to pander to a small majority but to push herself as some kind of new hero that no one asked for just for an ego boost. It's just pathetic and such a waste when there are so many people across the internet who can actually create amazing stories and they are never hired nor even noticed. But instead they thought this was better?

I wonder what your thoughts would be on the writer's other work, Skim. It's been years since I've read it, but, after watching your IANS series and comparing Skim to this, it does feel like another high-school wish-fulfillment work, but without the superhero bullshit to drag it down. The art is a lot better as well, but the story goes in both familiar and weirder places than IANS. Great video though. :) I've watched a lot of youtube videos on this comic book and have heard so many interesting perspectives from it. Almost a shame that I haven't read the book itself if it weren't so bad. lol

The only thing I’m not 100% convinced of is that Mandy is a self insert. Does she look like the writer? Yeah, kinda. But it’s not enough evidence for me to believe that this is definitely a self insert. Is she a bad character? Yes. Does the story pander to edgy young teenage girls who’s not like the other girls and tries so hard to be edgy? Yeah I think its fault is that it tried to be aimed at a young teen girl demographic but it fails to teach any good lessons or consequences

According to people who’ve read her other comics she actually does this a lot. It doesn’t really help that all Mandy’s opinions are akin to hers. So maybe Mandy is a self-insert but honestly..I’m not sure what’s worse.

I actually thought this too until I read about the actual writer more. I thought the self insert point was a stretch but she's just genuinely a self insert no questions asked

I think its fault is that it tried to be aimed at a young teen girl demographic which triggers grown up man. I mean, even if the main character is an edgy asshole, we can say the same about every single isekai protagonist which also usually don't teach valuable lessons and instead act as cringy self-insert for the audiences, but outside of DigiBro we barely see any outrage and mass bashing over that.

Something I find it funny is that she attempts to make Starfire like kind of villainous just because she seems to plays into misogynistic stereotypes, but she seems to actually be trying to be a good mom, and she did no way shape or form attempts to suppress her daughter or ask her not to do things because it makes her look bad. She always seems very supportive of her daughter and all she gets in return is a fucking asshole for aspects about her personality and her behavior and her appearance that her daughter doesn’t like, so it does fall back into the “everything. Revolves. Around. Her.” As she expects her mother to change simply because she doesn’t like the way she looks and acts. Ironically in normal comics StarFire, Raven, and some of the other superheroines (and sometimes even villains) could be seen as maybe not role models but at least idols to some girls because they are powerful they’re smart they’re intelligent they’re beautiful and they can keep up with it if not beat men. Whereas way back in the good old 50s people like wonder woman had to have a sidekick that was more behaviorally attuned to the ideal expectations of a woman at the time, and when both of them acted up too much they literally got spankings for diverting too much out of the norm for actual women at the time. So I find it kind of ironic that this self insert power fantasy that shits on StarFire because she’s perceivably just another brick in the patriarchy of submissive females, when she is still a respected teen titan and isn’t considered to be any lesser than any of her other teammates simply because she’s a woman. Oh the irony. The author really just wanted to feed her ego and not consider anything.

You know. It feels like this comic is trying to justify some things that the writer did as a kid. I mean, every good work of art should have some aspect of the artist’s experience in it. But this is like it’s trying to say that everything they did was correct and cool. Don’t be like this, even if you have changed, it’s good to admit that some of your decisions were wrong or even irrational.

Ive been wanting to say this but another commenter beat me to it: if you wanna see another sign of mandy being ungrateful and self-absorbed, take a look at her bird. I have parrots and boy let me tell you, theyre tough. They are high maintenance pets who require toys, big cages, lots of play time inside and out the cage, strict training and tons of love. Theyre also hella expensive, starfire mustve paid for them. Also as a student, i would never think of getting just one bird. Birds are social and when youre in school for most of the time, they get lonely. Ofc its possible to have only one bird, you just have to buy them toys (foraging, climbing, stimulating, colourful) to keep em occupied and when you get home, release them for play time. But mandy doesnt seem to have much stimulating toys for the poor cockatoo; she doesnt care about her bird. Oh and she got a dowel as her bird's perch- bad idea. You can search it, trust me its pitiful for these poor creatures to be 'looked after' by ignorant people, like mandy.

At some point, I might have to look into the power scale between Starfire and Blackfire, as well as how fight or flight instinct and a berserk state works. There’s still a too much rework needed to make it worth fixing, but I was imagining the closest way to make the fight scene work is if Mandy gaining her powers is more of a primal rage, only grunts and roars coming from Mandy. This would also imply that she’s able to put up a fight because Blackfire was worn down fighting Starfire. If the rest of the Titans will be involved, then in addition to Mandy only now realizing her powers, it just makes sense that she loses, but the fight was enough to buy time for their arrival. Plan B is she tries to act all badass but the lack of knowledge of how tameranians use their power, either Blackfire would toy with her because cocky villain, or something like Janamba vs fat Gogita.

I know someone probably said this in another video comment section, but this could have been decent if they just humbled Mandy midway through, had the teen titans take down Blackfire, and most importantly. Instead of having Starfire be emotionally neglectful have her accidently smother Mandy in her love, kindness, and attention. If Starfire accidently overwhelmed her daughter to the breaking point it would still seem OOC but it would be an interesting read. Because no parent is perfect and I bet superhero parents make even more mistakes. Also Mandy not wanting to go to college as a rich girl was pretty stupid. So instead have her want to go to college but super far from her mother to the point Starfire actually worries about the distance. That's what they could fight about and what Mandy snaps and leaves the house on. I know this story needs more help than just what I wrote but the more I watch these videos and read the comment section the more disappointed and annoyed I am at the author of this garbage.

I kinda thought that if they ever were to make another chapter of this, which I highly doubt would happen, they should add someone that is the complete opposite of Mandy. I think it would be interesting to have one of the kids from her school, the ones that kept asking about star fire, be a hard worker really trying to be part of the titans, have it be their dream. Whereas Mandy never tried, they do anything to compensate for their lack of powers. Maybe they take classes they don’t like or struggle with, like Forensic Science, CPR & Safety training, and Psychology, and only be taking it for the sole reason of believing that it would help them be a good hero. Hell, make them be annoying and constantly bug Mandy to let them meet the Titans tell she finally agrees. They would get along with the Titans and understands hero stuff better than Mandy. Make her be jealous of the fact that they don’t let a lack of power deter them from trying to be a hero. It could reach a point where Mandy lashes at them about how they should quit the hero stuff because they’ll never be able to be one. How sucking up to the titans is pathetic. The dam finally breaks, and the new character reveals their bitterness towards Mandy. They’d seen how she never cared about anything or tried to better themselves. Have them be jealous of they powers Mandy has that they feel are undeserved. Mandy could realize that the hatred she has on them could be because at one point she was like that, working hard to be just like Star fire till she gave up, and can’t stand that someone else was able to keep trying while she accepted her fate and grew to be uncaring and cold. On the other hand, the new character could come to terms with the fact that they can’t be a titan member and has to move forward with that. They chapter could leave off with them findings a new goal and Mandy having a better understanding on all the work she’s going to have to put in to be a hero’s and that she can’t regress to what she was before. Sorry for the long post, I’ve seen videos on people trying to fix High Guardian Spice and thought it be fun to do the same with this.

I wanna take my spin on this. I love DC comics (Mostly Batman Comics), they adore me. I love starfire and the Teen Titans. But this story... is full of garbage. I wanna make this character comparison opinion, I made a DC Oc Name Cyber who is adopted Son of Batman, he's a Hacker and Inventor. I wanted him to be the Lamb of the family but not a full focus (unlike Mandy). To make a character, Sure, you can make them the main character but you have to be mindful of other characters and it take sense in the story, give the others the spotlight and make sure doing more research to make sure you got a full idea. This is literally just not the best take on a DC comic. It's not even a DC comic, feels like a DC bad Fanfic you can get from Wattpad.
