Six quartets . Six monoliths . Untouched . You can listen to them , again and again , doesn't change anything . And Vegh .

These Vegh performances were the first Bartok I ever heard (except for Second Piano Concerto, when I was way too young for it). This was in 1956, when I was 14, and I was immediately drawn to them and to Bartok's music generally. For all their dissonance, somehow I knew that these are completely coherent, with no note out of place, none unnecessary. Bartok has been a life-long musical love of mine ever since. I like this photo of Bartok because in it he is almost smiling.

Touching testimony .. Congratulations on your choice of music .. A liking for string quartets is for few .. A special liking for Béla Bartók's quartets is for people with a refined spirit!
