Learn how Captains-of-Crush Grippers can help you increase your grip strength fast and how increasing grip strength is one of the fastest ways to increase overall body strength.
Transcripts:
MARC: Hi! if you're watching for the first time
I'm Marc Perry, the creator of BuiltLean,
which is your simple, efficient and
science-based guide to fitness.
Did you know that increasing your grip
strength is one of the fastest ways
that you can increase your strength?
And that lack of grip strength is associated
with poor health?
I'll speak with my friend Jason Kapnick who's
a successful powerlifter.
And he shared with me some words of wisdom
I want to share with you today.
First, you'll never be stronger
than your hands.
Second, if you can't hold it, you
can't lift it.
Which I think is pretty powerful actually.
So, how do you increase your grip strength?
Today I'm gonna be showing you a hand gripper
I've been using, called Captains-of-Crush,
which I believe can help you
improve your grip,
and over all body strength substantially.
Captains-of-Crush grippers were made by
IronMind in the early nineties
as an alternative to the plastic grippers your
dad probably had when you're growing up.
They are made of aircraft grade aluminum,
and the handles are knurled,
which means that they feel like metal
sandpaper to maximize grip.
They come in eleven different options,
although the most
popular core grippers are number 1, number 2,
number 3 and number 4
which ranged from a 140 pounds of pressure
to close all the way to 365 pounds of pressure.
And number 4 has only been closed by
5 people in the world.
It's not exactly easy. So, which ones should
you buy?
I remind the makers of Captains-of-Crush
recommends a practice gripper
to warm up your hands that you can close,
and then a goal gripper
which is the gripper you're trying to close.
For men, I recommend the trainer to start,
and that's going to be your practice gripper,
although in the beginning it might be tough to close,
and then number 1 is going to be your goal gripper.
Number one requires a 140 pounds pressure, and
the trainer, let me actually show you right here,
the trainer is a 100 pounds of pressure.
You can see the T on the bottom
and then you can all see the number 1 on
the bottom which I have in my hand right here.
Number 1.
Now, if you're looking to really increase
your grip strength to the next level
you can go for number 2 which requires
200 pounds pressure
For women, you can start out with the guide
which is about 60 pounds of pressure
and then move to the sport as your goal gripper
which requires 80 pounds of pressure to close.
I do wanna also mention that if you have
soft hands and you wanna keep soft hands,
this grip is definitely not for you, they are
definitely be tough on your hands,
so that is I hope a fair warning.
Okay, how do you actually close them?
We know which ones you wanna buy,
so keep in mind there've literally been
books written about grip strength
and there's even a book written about how to
close Captains-of-Crush grippers.
I'm going to share to you just a
few quick tips.
The first is, where you hold the gripper in your
hand is really important
to help you close it properly.
You want the right leverage
so you wanna kinda start out the gripper a little bit
higher than you'd imagine in your palm,
and you don't want it to be too low on your hands.
Also, you want your pinky to be very close to
the bottom of the gripper.
You don't want it to be too high up.
You wanna get the most leverage.
So you can actually use your other hand to
kinda close it a little bit,
get it in place, and then you can squeeze it
all the way closed.
And you can hold it for a second. The idea is you wanna
close the metal handles completely together
and touch them, that's a close.
Second, in order to close these effectively,
you just need to practice.
The more you practice, the better you're going to be
so I recommend doing
let's just say 5 a couple of times a day.
So you do 5 total closes with your right
and then 5 closes with your left,
and then you do it again later in the day,
or you just do it once a day whatever
works with your schedule
but the more you practice just the full close,
and just hold it and release
the faster you're gonna increase your grip strength.
Lastly, is to do forced closes and negatives,
and so right here I'm gonna take up the number 3.
Number 3 requires like 280 pounds of pressure
to close, this is like strongman territory,
but if I close it on my own as far as I can
I'm gonna use my other hand as an assistant close
it helps increase the tension in your hand
and builds up the strength even faster.

Fell off a sail boat in the Gulf of Mexico , and all I could grab was a the small thin wire attached to one of the sails. I'm strong ,young and alone and the only thing that really saved me was hand strength. All my muscular body weight was working against me. Hand strength outlasted arm and shoulder fatigue. When the wind calmed I was able to lift myself hand over hand out of the sea and save myself. Train your grip ; it could be a matter of life or death. Thanks Tommy

For me I almost always fail at the grip, never at back strength because there are many things that are uncomfortable to grip and any kind of climbing training or grip training gives you a much better chance at your hands not slipping because it's much easier for you to maintain that grip.

Good tips! Grip strength is very different between different persons. Some are not able to benchpress 80kg but close Nr1 without problem. Other benchpress more than 100kg but fail on Nr1. The genetics has a big impact on this. We have different hand size, and while there are a big difference between body size, different persons can be stronger in different parts of the body. According to my understanding the average untrained man is able to close about the 0,5 gripper. Therefore I think Guide or Sport is good even for many men as warm up gripper. If you are able to close 0,5 the Trainer is a bit too heavy for the first warm up set.

Should you buy the strength suited for your weaker hand and work on equal reps for both hands until your weaker arm catches up?
@DarkSim64
@DarkSim64 8 жыл бұрын
That's what I do, I'm no expert but I think that's what makes the most sense, otherwise you may end up with a huge difference of strength between both of your hands. A year ago, my left hand wasn't able to close the #1, or barely able to. I worked my way up by doing 5x5 (or until failure if I wasn't able to complete all 5 reps of any set. I always start with my weaker hand, and if for example I only managed to do 3 reps on a set with my weak hand, then I'll stop after 3 reps with my stronger hand, even if I was able to continue with it. I did this 3 times a week. Once I managed to do all 5x5, I increased to 5 sets of 6, then 5x7 etc. At some point I reached 5x16, so I decided to go up a level and buy the #1.5. Did the same for a few months, up to 5x12. Now I got the #2 two weeks ago, could barely close it with my left hand at first. Doing this training again, I can do 5 reps with both hands already. I don't know if this workout is optimal or even close to, but it worked very well for me.

another thing about training your grip strength is for martial arts. which is why I started using them. good grip strength transitions into punching power. despite what the local tae-bo class might tell you. real punching power comes in large part through forearm strength. I started with the #2. but I did "cheat" a little. not by using two hands, or anything to do with compressing the gripper. but I DID, use masking tape on side that my fingers squeezed it. the only reason is, the way I held it. the handle would hurt, and tear up my skin. so I wrapped it with masking tape. it didn't give me any advantage. it just kept it from tearing up the skin. and even though I started with #2. no, I am NOT a big, muscular guy. I was at the time about 165 lbs. 5'10"

That's a great question. If you check out the instructions on IronMind, they recommend that you do 3 sets of 5-10 reps 3x per week. Essentially, they advise that you approach grip training the same way that you do a regular strength workout. Start with a warm-up by doing a few lighter-weight sets to prepare your hands for max strength. Then do 3 sets of a more challenging gripper for 5-10 reps to failure. And for total hand strength, they suggest training your flexors with a rubber band. Remember, it's during rest that you recover and get stronger. Hope that helps! - Kristin, Managing Editor

if you don't have the money to buy multiple grippers. another good way of warming up your hand, plus getting added strength training is. go to a chin up bar. hang from it with your hands. but let your hand "droop" a little, to where you're hanging from just your fingers. once or twice per minute, try doing what I call "finger pull ups" it's great for warmup and it even helps to train individual finger strength

There are many different opinions, but once you can get to 5 reps, consider a heavier "challenger" gripper. Going to the #2 helped me close the #1 more easily.

Is it normal to have pain in your pinky knuckle tendon closest to the nail? Mine always hurt after I use the grippers but I've only been using them for about a week. I think it has to do with how my other 3 fingers are pretty firmly on the gripper but my pinky is just barely on them when I'm holding it.

@wilhelmu

i started with 20 kg grippers, moved to 40, to 50, now at 70 my usual routine is to do 20kg like 20 time on each hand, then 40kg like 20 times again, then 50kg 20 times, and then 70kg as many times as i can. once i can do 75 kg 25 times without trouble, ill move on to 90 kg etc.
@rickstark85

@Manfreski except the exact opposite is true. It's best to close the hardest gripper you can close and try holding it shut for 5 - 10 seconds. Do this for a few sets with breaks in between. Do it maybe twice a week.
@BuiltLeanTV

It depends on preference. These days, I just use one challenger gripper #2 which I'm unable to close. The other option is I had a #1 which I don't any longer is that I would do 5 closes and really crush the gripper. I personally like doing 1 to 5 reps. With the challenger gripper, I just do 1 rep for 3 to 5 sets as it's strong medicine. The gripper can also serve as a useful barometer for your training status in terms of strength or readiness. If you are overtrained, the gripper will be very difficult to close.

@kurtwpg
@kurtwpg 8 ай бұрын
Basically just a matter of can you close a gripper that you couldn't before, and can you do more reps of one that you were already able to close. First you need to be honest with yourself, are you in a little better shape than average or a little worse than average? When he says Trainer and #1, I think that's suitable for about the 55th percentile of men. Don't be embarrassed to go with Sport and #0.5 if that's what you need. If you don't want to put out a ton of money and only get one, go with Trainer. If it turns out you can't close the Trainer, repping it as far as you can go will still increase your grip strength.

@BuiltLean is there a way to know what number of Ironmind to buy by comparing the deadlift time you do on a bar + your own weight so that you have an idea on the "hard version" to buy ? For example the 140 lbs, will it be challenging enough if I have about 150lbs and can dead hang more than 1 minute ?
@BuiltLeanTV
@BuiltLeanTV Жыл бұрын
Not sure if that will translate that well, because dead hang time is grip endurance as much as strength. Grippers improve maximal grip strength. Would be an interesting test. Recommend most guys start with the trainer. If you have an unusually strong grip, then go with #1. Otherwise, stick with the trainer. Progression is the name of the game with strength / exercise

I have this weird hand gripper that has finger grooves on it. Its old so it makes this squeaky sound, and when you let off, the bar that is on it makes a popping sound that sounds annoying. The grip is plastic and its smooth, so its hard to grip it and squeeze without using your other hand to keep it in place. Its better than nothing, but I never get an actual work out from it.

It has an effect on the nervous system to unlock pushing and pulling strength. While I imagine there is scientific research to support this, it becomes self-evident when you increase your grip strength. For example, increasing grip strength allows you to activate more muscles. Is there a correlation between how much you can deadlift and press with the handgrippers?
@murphpawz
@murphpawz 5 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Molina rumor is 1/3 of what you can double overhand hold for 10 seconds. So if you can hold 315 double overhand deadlift for 10 seconds(or doubles or triples) then that is what you can close. Fire example my CoC #2 is rated at 107 lbs, so a person that can double over hand 321lbs for 10 second hold or a triple should be able to close it or get very close. What you can deadlift with a mixed grip or with straps has no measurable correlation though.
