Just the lesson I needed. I'm about 2 weeks into GMM 101 and have been trying to unlearn years of crap technique and holding the pick wrong (I'm actually excited about that though!). I was just starting to have more doubts as I was more or less now holding it right but keep needing to rest my pinky on the pick guard and was having some accuracy issues (& bumping other strings etc.). I've just been trying the 'resting my palm on the bridge' but it dosen't seem to suit my wrist and strat combo. So spent some more time fully committing to 'the fist' (pinky tucked in!) & only resting my fore arm on the shoulder of the guitar (as the only contact point) and moving my whole arm up & down as I go up or down the strings. And I think it's working! Kind of had to start trusting that my pick will hit the right string - and being conservative with movement etc. Tried on all the workout excercises (fortunately I love my strat as there were moments I wanted to throw it in frustration!) and it started to jell, then I tried it on some riffs I'm learning and all is going well! Hopefully I'm now on the right road to permanently fixing it. Thank you!!

Owen, just found this video. Great stuff. I'm working on the song Kids Aren't Alright by the Offspring. I'm finding it very challenging to pick the intro, which is played with all downstrokes, up tempo. I can only get to about 85 bpm while the song is actually 100 bpm. What is your advice? If I play it with alternate picking it's easier but that's not the way Dexter Holland plays it.

Well a week as past and I have moved from 40 BPM to 56 solid. It is an exciting and dynamic process - changing my picking technique and using the metronome works but was painful until it started to work and then wow!!! are those my fingers moving that fast - amazing. I’ve watched this video 3-4 times now each time I make progress getting faster at picking speed. I’ll do good for a couple of days and then it’s like overnight I forgot everything!! I work on it everyday as a part of my practice routine, too bad it’s not as easy as strumming lol

Thanks. Good info. When I play in short sleeves my arm sticks to my guitar. Worse in hot weather lol any advice besides wearing long sleeves. Makes it harder for hand to travel up and down from 6th to 1st string and vice versa. Maybe it’s my arm technique? Thanks I have a fender HSS strat.

I have always held the pick more in the tips of thumb and index finger, can I play faster holding the pick like you show, also will it assist if I play hybrid pick with fingers

Add to the fun - when I started the 8 week course I switched from acoustic to electric (2004 Les Paul faded double cutaway black - sweet) just did 40 bpm - solid - let the games begin. Thanks again Owen

Great lesson, right on the money Owen! I have been working on my picking for a few months now, kind of an ongoing thing with me. I discovered several issues with my picking (during your 8 Week Guitar Skills Workshop, actually) as I increased my BPM. Pick angle, trying different picks (materials, shapes, thickness), technique and grip.. all of it. Because I have some loss of sensation, it takes a lot of work and practice to 'retrain' my picking. It's still not quite right, but it is so much better and I am beginning to see improvement. You have also given me some new things to work on with this and the linked video. Thanks man, you're awesome!

I held the pick that way for years but had a difficult time with noise. I now hold the pick on its side with the rounded part as the initial pick hitting the strings. I feel like it has helped immensely but do you think I was doing something wrong before with the holding the pick?

I’m working on Reeling in the years... the middle dual guitar part where the picking gets really fast gives me a lot of trouble. I’ve tried it using hammer ons and pull offs and picking each note. If the tempo is slow enough I can pick each note but sometimes the drummer gets revved up and then I have to use the hammer ons.

As much as you can,don't look at either hand,this will isolate the sound & the feel without you having to sight it & you can easily hear when you flub And your sync(hopefully with a metronome or music)will get tight,You have to look some,practice taking your eyes off/on & of course put in the work man,when it clicks you'll be so glad you did🤘

@@jacktheriffer9606 I disagree with this. When working on syncronisation you must look at the hand in focus to build the best technique possible. If you are working on fretting hand technique, use laser focus to concentrate on your fretting hand. If you are working on picking hand efficiency and technique, then focus completely on the picking hand. you need to make sure you are applying the technique correctly. Furthermore, use a mirror and a video to see how things look from another angle.
