For my 40th, I threw a massive, $1200, 80s themed party at my apartment. I had my purple prom dress shortened and taken out, a full bar, bartender, bowls of edibles (legal) and cigs, a LIVE piano player/singer, badass food spread plus pizza at 2AM. ALL needs provided, but everyone was asked to throw $1-2 in a jar for potential Ubers. To use the words of my generation, it was LIT. People BROUGHT their 80s attire and dance moves.

I feel differently cause she paid for everything aside from a couple people who paid 250 and she got footed the bill for them. I’d be pissed if these friends were flaking even before this and then I get stuck with all the payments. They are the crappy ones if you can’t make it don’t rsvp and promise to go and then bail last week. That’s a shitty friend especially since they knew awhile in advance.

1st story: $250 for the ABNB food/drinks. The activities were an additional expense. Plus going out to eat. Add plane tickets and rental car on that. In addition to any babysitting/pet sitting costs. I can see this trip easily costing her guests over $1,000. Most people can't do it.

Perhaps, but what is sad is that doesn’t have to be true. Take it from a girl who locks herself in her room satisfied with the friends she has. So this is more me talking to myself lol Friends don’t all have to be similar, in my experience, & it has only been 1/3 of my life so far, friends are those we feel comfortable with. They can be emotional, intellectual, activity based friendships. According to the dictionary A friend is defined as a person whom one knows & with whom one has a bond of mutual affection. The older I grow, I realized I have different dynamics with people around me, that doesn’t mean I care about them any less. I still enjoy my time around them, & I will always cherish our times together. I hope when I die I have lots of people visit me or even think of me, those will be the ones who see me as their friend. Thanks for letting me share my two cents.

My son has a backyard wedding that was absolutely beautiful then a big party after. I'm proud they are young & mindful about saving for the future instead of going on trips just to party. 25:20 Honestly, I’m here to vent. Because as a previous barista of an “unnamed” coffee shop with a popularly “fast” drive thru. THIS POOR GIRL. There were so many days I would go home from work and want to end it, because so many customers come with the intent to find something wrong or be unhappy with their service or order. Mind you, you CANNOT according to U.S. health and safety codes (for a lot of state) cross contaminate people foods or drinks with strangers… the floor… be dirty ass straw… and oh, they typically train you to NEVER TAKE BACK A CUSTOMERS ORDER and place it back into any container that will touch someone’s else food or drink. She wanted her smoothie double blended. She wanted it perfectly and thoroughly blended. She probably saw a single banana clump or ice chip and lost it. And wanted it done at the drive thru. They’re not going to re-fucking-blend a beverage she already took and probably crammed her dirty little straw in. And if someone ever has, they were probably young, new, or too intimidated or tired to say no. You have to be nice to these customers and policy in MOST PLACES I worked is to give a full refund. You’re rewarded for making a scene. You’re refunded for complaining and harassing employees. For a long time, I couldn’t afford to quit the job and had no other skills or knowledge to support myself. And then you’d go to work and have to call CPS for the woman yelling and slapping her kids in the backseat WHILE IN THE drive thru… (to get her cheese danish toasted again because “IT WAS RAW.” God, those were the days.) if you made it this far, of course I’m not mad at you. I’m mad with you 😂 And thank you for listening to me vent. Not gonna lie, I do feel a lot better now.

Boys and their moms cleaning up after them: my husband has one of these mothers and I definitely had a hard time when we first got married. Fast forward to three years into it, COVID hits, and he got laid off. Since I was the only one working I stopped doing the household chores because, in my mind, the person at home not earning an income should be doing the cooking, errands, and cleaning while I'm away for 9-10 hours a day. He learned really quickly how much it took to run a house. Now that we're both working again, we share household responsibilities evenly and neither of us sits down to relax while the other is still working on what needs done. I'm pretty sure that layoff saved my marriage.

I am grateful that my husband grew up with a single mother and him being the oldest he had to help out his mom in the household chores. I still do all of the housekeeping in our home since that is the way I was programmed but he will follow me around and see what he can help with 😅 its a hard cycle to break but im glad we are at the time things are changing, we are changing them.

For one of my friends 30 th birthday we went and stayed at an Airbnb in Stoke on Trent, around 10 of us went, we drove up there together, went food/drink shopping when we arrived, spent a long weekend there, drank, ate, spent most of the time chatting in the hot tub, and drove home. It was around £80 each, and we had an absolute blast, we made lifelong memories, we bonded so much, and there was no pressure to do any activities or spend extra money. It was amazing, and it was cheap. There’s no reason to spend so much money for a birthday trip

It was around a 4 hour drive, but we went in 2 different cars and had a great little road trip, and 2 of us did have to fly but that’s just because we surprised birthday boy with two of his friends from home who flew in from Ireland, but no one made them, and a flight from Ireland to England in March was so cheap! If a persons kink is to be watched while engaging in a sexual act by someone not their partner, they need the persons consent established before hand. Otherwise, it is a form of SA/sexual harassment. It always feels awkward when someone with money suggests a trip or an outing and invites you but then expects you to cover a significant amount of costs. I once had a situation where a girl I knew-not even a close friend-invited me to her birthday. Instead of a simple party, it was a small trip where I’d have to pay for the hotel, all the meals, and activities like skydiving or a hot air balloon ride. The total would’ve been nearly $1,000 for a two-day trip, and that’s not even including a gift for her. I had to decline-it was just too much.

@@laniguamani7009I hope there’s tutorials online for new young folks trying to break into a field on their own, teaching basic stuff they may not expect, like how to deal with a situation like that. These girls need to learn to be the authority figure in their business and say calmly but straight up, “I’m sorry, but that’s inappropriate. I can reschedule you for a time when you aren’t busy, but if it happens again you’ll be banned from my business.” And that’s the soft version. The hard version starts with understanding that you have the right to refuse service to anyone, and the moment you tell them to leave and they don’t, they’ve broken the law and the police can be called to trespass them officially from your place of business, no matter whether it’s your home or an office. The first story really got me. I am the 'high -earner' of my friend group, I ask my friends to set a budget of the trip. I ask if 200 ok for this, is 400 ok for that? How much are we feeling on plane tickets ANND we plan stuff 4+months out. I also outline what potential costs would be for travel, rental car, and some places of interest we hae a choice to check out. I am a planner by nature and found getting active feedback from your friends helps with these 'money' tensions. No one wants to feel like they can't afford something but if people are truely friends then you should be like " Hey my fun money, spending budget is $500. If we can work that coo and if not, then next time" 9 times out of 10 people will respect it and appericate it.

I hosted my birthday party last year, it was a themed tea party that I and my mum cooked/baked everything for, my sister-in-laws helped me decorate and everyone had over a month notice. People said they were coming. Day of only 4 if my friends showed up and my sister-in-laws. So my aunts came too. My friend group showed me how much they valued me that day. On a different note 2 of those girls who turned up I hadn’t spoken to a lot before that because I moved to a different city and we just sort of fell out of contact. That day rekindled our strong friendship and we talk and see each other so much more now.

First story: $250 x 16= $4000. How much food and supplies did they need? She says she was paying for the Airbnb but obviously wanted some help with that. At least be honest because there is no way you are spending $4000 on food and supplies. At which point did she tell them they needed to pay $250? Because if I said "yes" and then got told I had to pay $250 I would have to back out. I legit can't afford $250, plus events and spending money. If not for the $250 I could come up with some money. So, if she told $250 after they said yes that is wrong. Honestly, I don't think she and I would vibe as friends anyway. Someone who needs to be "celebrated" in such a way is not my cup of tea. Honey you can be the person I love most in the world, but at the end of the day you are a person same as me. I will "celebrate" you with a day trip, a dinner, a movie and some cake and ice cream. If I really like you I will sing happy birthday and give you a modest gift. If you need to be "celebrated" more than that....we are not a friendship match.

Not to mention she said where they were going, not where they were coming from. So on top of the $250, plus however much u'd need for other events & spending money it's highly possible ppl had to pay for round trip plane tickets & if driving who knows how much gas money. Then if u have kids & or pets u have to pay for them to be looked after & let's not forget about lost wages for however many days of work u have to miss. So yea I'd want any money I'd spent or given her already back as well over canceling a trip that really didn't need to be canceled. Since there were ppl who had already given her money & paid for flights & she got quite a bit of her money back for the catering & airbnb, she could've just gotten a smaller airbnb, skipped the catering, just scaled back a little & still had a great trip. Seems to me she was being entitled & selfish, bc 16 × 250 is $4,000 grand. She said the catering was $1100, so they weren't helping pay for stuff as she claimed they would be paying for everything & then some bc the only 2 other things she said besides catering was riding ATVs & getting a cake, are u saying it cost more than $3,000 to ride ATVs & get a cake. She also didn't even ask if there was anyone who could or wouldn't ride an ATV, she just made plans. I get it's her bday but if ur expecting ppl to spend that much money on a destination bday it better damn well be something they all enjoy. Plus I bet she expected a separate gift on top of all this

I organized a surprise party for my husband’s 30th birthday in 2021. I invited our small group of friends (5 couples). We shared the expense of the accommodation (2 nights) and I paid for food and drinks for everyone. It was a nice mountain cabin that everyone agreed on. We each drove our personal cars (2h drive). I bought the cake and the main gift was shared 50% covered by me and the 50% remaining by the 5 couples (less than 50USD each couple). This was all discussed and agreed, I did not “force” anyone to do as I wanted. It was a group decision and effort. We all had a great time and safe to say my husband was very surprised 😆.

For the first woman, my Dad told me that you're lucky in life if you have one good friend - and it may not be who you think. I'm blessed to have more than one friend and I've learned "best" friend is synonymous with friend at this stage of the game. Having a large TRUE friend group has never been my thing. People are in your life for a reason, season, or a lifetime. For her birthday, do all 16 of the people have money like you do? Now, I'm all about reciprocation so if you find that folks aren't showing up for you, move around. Adulting is expensive. I've learned to give people grace when it comes to spending money. You never know what folks have on their plates. I hope you had a happy birthday and will have many many more.

Then to no fault of my own, I became disabled. Bc I lost everything and could no longer pay for others, buy presents, go to expensive restaurants, drink, and go on trips, I became an invisible friend/person. Then another person showed up, drank almost all my booze, and then passed out on my sofa for 6 hours. NEITHER OF THEM BROUGHT ME A PRESENT! From then on, I gave up on expectations. I take myself out for sushi, buy myself something frivolous, and enjoy a stress free day. Exactly! Everyone turns thirty and very few expect such a large group to make such a commitment of time and money. What if everyone in the friend group did that?! She didn’t say how close to the date people started backing out but I’m sure many said yes at first but then the reality of the commitment hit and they realized it wouldn’t work for them. I can’t even think of 16 people I would ask to make such a trip.

That is not true. Some people have supportive friends. But the issue is not about that. Plans were made based on promises. If they were not interested in going and said, "No one cares about your birthday as much as you do" from the beginning then this would be a different conversation. It's like making a promise, going back on it and then saying "it's your fault for accepting it or expecting me to follow through". Crazy.

If my friends care about me at all I would expect them to show up for what is important to me.

The one guy that refused to spend ended up with a suitcase full of interesting business cards stuck in EVERY possible place. I've gone on a few girls trips, local and far away, and they were fantastic! The key: we PLANNED TOGETHER. It wasn't one person dictating what we all did. Everyone was invested. And yes, go with a smaller group of your closer friends. That's just going to be better because you know each other well, you are more comfortable communicating and respecting each other's wishes, and larger groups of people are always harder to coordinate.

As someone who worked for victim support, I think some of you are overseeing the fact that the lash tech was in survival mode. You don’t chose the flight, fight or freeze/fawn response you experience. Your body chooses for you. Even if you encounter the same thing twice, you can respond differently. It could be she had a freeze or fawn (then you cooperate so the dangerous situation passes without getting hurt/faster) response; this is the most traumatising response there is because a) it comes from “laying dead” from the time where humans were still prey and b) secondairy victimisation (“why didn’t you say no”). I myself have witnessed public indecency at night at a scary train station and I fled, afraid to get SA’d. Rationally I would have called the cops but it didn’t cross my mind, even though I worked at victim support at thay time. So please don’t judge this young woman. Please keep the guilt where it belongs. Don’t make her experience secundairy victimisation. (Sorry for the bad english, not a native speaker)

She was smart though. The deal was anyone that backed out after a certain date was still locked into paying monthly unless they found someone to take over their spot. We had a couple drop off but still paid . She made it clear and in text so she had recourse if anything went left. You have to . Friends or not you need it in writing. Oh and there where activities she was getting tickets for in advance but it was not mandatory anyone participated in activities. If u wanted to participate you paid ahead, if not you didn't . RE: the birthday girl - She and I are definitely from two different worlds. Thinking a small busload of people can manage and afford a trip like that at the age of 30? Honey, by 25, most of my friends had families and careers to worry about. Yes, at 16, 20 of us could easily get together and do all kinds of stuff at any time. But, after becoming adults with responsibilities, we were lucky if maybe 5 of us who still lived in the same town could all manage to get together for a few hours at someone's house for cheap/free pizza and beer. In my mid-40s now, I'm lucky if I can get one local friend to go out for lunch. Heck, I don't even have kids, and I've had to pass on trips multiple times because I couldn't find a pet sitter. Grownups are busy and broke these days. Unless you and your entire friend group are independently wealthy and single, you might want to temper your expectations. But, fwiw, if I was one of the friends who did RSVP and pay the deposit, I would have told her not to refund my money after she canceled. I would have told her to keep it and consider it my birthday gift to her.

Regarding the first story: It sounds like the friends were fine with paying for their own plane flights, and their own meals, but then the birthday girl kept adding more, and more expenses for the ATV rental, the caterer, the decorator, etc. that the friends weren't expecting. The cost really started adding up and became so expensive and way over the friends' budgets. It sounds like they agreed to the trip, and then were told about all the extra expenses AFTER they had already RSVP'd. You can't spring all that stuff on them AFTER they RSVP.

For the first video, I think it depends on how much the friends were willing to pay versus how much the OP kept adding on. It seemed like she was adding on more and more to make the party great, but that adds more to what the friends needed to chip in. With the cost of flights and the additions the OP was wanting, it could have ended up costing thousands. I feel like OP needs to accept that she can have true friends, but that doesn’t mean they need to spend thousands on her birthday. If she is willing to do that, that is great, but not everyone can afford that. This is especially true for people with kids. With this economy, if I have an extra couple thousand to spend, I would rather take my kids on vacation than spend it on my friend’s birthday. That doesn’t mean I don’t love my friend. It means, the few thousand I can spare, I would want it to go to my family for a joint experience rathe than a singular event that I’m participating in.

May not be the case, but that's what I would be feeling toward. And even if she knew they could pay/have done things like that before, it's incredibly rude. You don't just spring that on someone and expect that because they could pay for one thing that automatically means they can pay another. Assuming makes an ass out of you and me, as the saying goes. I know some had genuine reasons for not being able to make it, one or two may have lied, whilst my former best friend was upfront and said "I'm not going", because she would have rather been at a club, being fully aware that I hate clubbing and alcohol. Fast forward 12+ years and I don't have any of them in my life anymore. If you're a young person reading this, please don't wait until your late 20s/early 30s to recognise and break away from any level of toxicity. On a lighter note, happy new year everyone 😅

The woman with the 30th birthday was bananas to plan such a crazy party. Who needs that? If you can afford it, pay for everything or just tone it down. Maybe a big party or a trip? 16 people? It sounded exhausting. 30 is when you start dropping exhausting friends and it sounds like birthday girl might be exhausting and the friends already have her at low contact. So no contact might not even be noticeable to the “friends”.

Story 1: There's a saying I heard once that i think is relevant here. "If you have more than a handful of close friends, you really have zero close friends." It's just impossible to have a close level of friendship with that many people and maybe you're a bit underestimating what "close friends" means. Honestly, it's really entitled to think more than a handful of people will shell out that kind of money for your birthday. Plus she "lost her friend group" over it? Why? Because she threw a fit that people aren't coming? Also, she's on the hook for those who wanted to go and lost money, because she canceled the trip because only 4 people could go instead of her unrealistic expectations. "i've come to the realization that I don't have the friends that I think that I have." Yeah, no shit. NOBODY has that many friends. Acquaintances? Sure. Friendly associates? Absolutely. But friends, especially ones willing to spend thousands for you? LOL, girl, NO.
