Just a warning for anyone planning to try this. Make sure you EXHALE the air before you ascend . If you are diving deeper, the difference in air pressure between the breath you took at for example 5m deep vs the pressure of the air at the surface will be enough to burst your lungs.

I’ve been diving for 30 years, mostly for scallops. This is a neat device that looks like fun. I see a lot of comments about people concerned about him going to deep. If you stay above 30 feet depth you should be ok. Just don’t blast to the top of the water and careful you don’t go out to far in the event you get a cramp and aren’t able to swim back.

the Hacksmith once you go deeper than lets say 5 meters there will be less air in the tanks than they where at the surface lets say half the volume if you go 10 meters deep youl be at 2 bar ( 2 atmospheres ) if you take a breath at that depth and swim back up with out exhaling you will burst your lungs cause your reducing the atmospheric persure back down to 1 bar (not to mention if you go down to 10 meters your little tanks wont have air in them cause the max you can pressurize is probably 2 bars max 3 bars or else you burst the bottles) secondly these are made to go down a meter or 2 so as you go down a bar your bottle will as well lets say you have 3 bars in your bottle and you go down to 2 bars depth you will have 1 bar in your tank left 1 meter = 3 feet 5 meters = 16 feet 10 meters = 33 feet 10 meters = 2 bar 20 meters = 3 bar 40 meters = 5 bar etc etc 1 bar (pressure) = 15~ psi 2 bar (pressure) = 30~ psi never go deeper than 2 bars if you dont have more than 20bars left in your tank ( basic scuba diving knowledge)

Normally I don’t respond to this internet back forth, but I see a lot of interest to do this from non-divers, and no thorough explanation of why this is dangerous. The comments are incomplete and can be misinterpreted, especially from the guy who keeps insulting everyone (I think it is Trump pontificating online in his spare time). Therefore, below is a summary of the basics you learn when getting certified, hopefully to scare away anyone from trying this who is not trained. The lungs are very similar to a balloon, that is blown up enough where it just begins to stretch (i.e. you don’t have to blow very hard), and allowed to deflate on it’s own. Since the material is flexible, the volume can change so that the pressure exerted on the walls is roughly the same as the surrounding air pressure. If blown up where the walls are stretched tightly, then the walls now exert a force so the pressure inside the balloon is greater than the surrounding air. The lungs’ walls don’t exert much pressure, so basically the air pressure within the lungs changes very little as you breathe in and out in normal air. Now as you go underwater pressure increases, roughly double every 30 feet. So if you blow up a balloon at the surface (air pressure = 1 atm), tie it off, and submerge it 30 feet, the water will exert twice as much pressure (2 atm) on the balloon than the air at the surface. Since the number of gas molecules inside the balloon has not changed, the volume must shrink by half. Same gas, twice the pressure, half the volume. Now bring the balloon back to the surface and the volume returns to its original size since the surrounding pressure is back to 1 atm. This happens since the balloon is flexible. If the walls are rigid (like a scuba tank), the volume is not changing and the pressure only changes if air is released from the tank, regardless of how deep the tank is. Your lungs behave much like the balloon. Even though you have a rigid body and rib cage, there are numerous air pockets all over such that pressure outside the body affects the lungs, sinuses, and other air cavities. Maybe not exactly like a balloon, but very similar. So if you are just a normal swimmer, taking a breath at the surface, diving to 10 or 20 feet, then resurfacing, you are fine whether you exhale a little underwater, or hold it until resurfacing. Everyone knows this from swimming throughout life. The size of your lungs is a function of how deep you go and how much air you keep in, but in this scenario the size always stays in the “normal” range. Only if you free dive 60+ feet does your lung shrinkage cause problems, even if you can hold your breath that long. These people’s bodies somehow adapt in these extreme conditions. Now introduce a device that provides air underwater (doesn’t matter where that air comes from). Fill the balloon at the surface (1 atm), close it, submerge it to 30 feet, and now the volume is half and pressure is double (2 atm). Now fill the balloon at 30 feet back to the original volume. The pressure is still the same since the volume for a flexible object filled with air will always change to match the surrounding pressure, and the tightness of the balloon walls is negligible. But now there are twice as many molecules of air than we had at the surface. Close off the balloon and bring it back to the surface. The pressure is now back to 1 atm, so the balloon will continue to expand and probably pop. This is what happens with your lungs. At 30 feet you are filling your lungs with more air than you would at the surface (even though the volume is the same), and if you hold your breath while surfacing… Well I don’t think it would pop inside your rib cage but something bad would happen. If you slowly exhale before reaching the surface (and ascend at a rate slower than a bubble), then you are fine. As said before, never hold your breath while diving with a device. Swimming / free diving is fine. So the scary thing is someone using this at even 15 feet, taking a full breath, panicking and surfacing without exhaling. Your lungs won’t be 2x bigger than normal, but maybe 1.4x. Not good. There was a bunch of talk about regulators but all that does is ensure the high pressure air from the tank reduces to match whatever pressure you are at in water before it goes in your mouth. I’m sure you can do something similar with short bursts from the release valve of this DIY device, but I wouldn’t trust my life to something that isn’t certified and tested. Else you may look like those critters in the old Dig Dug game. Even if you think you understand all this and can control the DIY device safely, you also increase the amount of gas (Nitrogen) your lung tissue absorbs when under pressures greater than surface pressure, which will exceed the rate at which the body normally gets rid of this gas. The more time spent below, the more gas absorbed and the greater the chance of bubbles and other problems during and after ascent. That is why divers must calculate depths and times to be under a safe limit. You may think this DIY device is too short and too shallow to concern with this but if you repeatedly surface, repump, and dive to 15 feet you can potentially absorb too much Nitrogen. Hopefully this long winded answer puts enough fear into the non-trained.

If your really wanna be underwater for long enough I'd say it's much safer to get your PADI or other form of diving license. Just like Jay says, people who don't know what the dangers and risks are from scuba diving shouldn't be even trying it with stuff like this. If you don't wanna do that I'd advise you to start teaching yourself how to hold your breath longer/control your body so you can stay under water much longer while snorkeling.

A few warnings from a scuba diver: Exhale as you go up. Failure to do so WILL cause lung damage and possibly death from the differences in pressure. Inhaling pressurized air underwater increases the nitrogen levels in your blood which can make you sick. This typically happens on deep dives but it can still happen through long term or mutliple shallow dives. Take a break every once and a while and you will be fine. Stay at a dept in which you don't need to rely on the device. This thing is held together with glue and it will fail under enough pressure. If it does fail do not frantically swim to the surface without exhaling. Be very careful if you plan on trying to increase the amount of air. Compressed air can damage your lungs if it has enough pressure. A standard scuba tank is capable of holding a few thousand psi of air but it has regulators that prevent this air from blowing up your lungs. You can make your own regulators but at that point, you should probably just pay for scuba lessons, get certified, and have a much higher chance of living. If you are still hell bent on increasing the air in this thing, keep your tank low pressure and add cut offs so it isn't preventing you from exhaling.

What is scary is when the hose folds xD but even then you just took a breath you can easily get to the top. most people i know can hold their breath for atleast 40 seconds professional free divers over 4 min. takes you a few seconds to get up even form 10 meters i wouldent worry.

I like it!! It will be good near the surface, but because of Boyles law the volume of air will reduce as you get deeper. At 10 meters it will be half what it was at the surface. Also beware, that if you fill your lungs with air at a depth of 10 meters and rise to the surface without breathing out, you will damage your lungs, because the volume of air will double.

Shaun the problem with his invention is that at his maximum depth the compressed air will fill his lungs and supersaturate his blood. On surfacing, this dissolved air in his blood will form little bubbles in his blood that could collect in the chambers of his heart or block and artery to his head. Because he hasn't got much air supply in the first place he will hurry to the surface rather than take his time. SCUBA divers have the same problem if they rush to the surface.

Ciao!

@stefanoMitico
@stefanoMitico 8 жыл бұрын

Sorry that I posted so much, but just my 2 cents, this guy is brilliant in my opinion apart from the cautionary measures that needs to be addressed in the video rather than just in the description. Innovations like this can have a big impact to real commercial products that we can all one day look back and say ya I knew this guy when he did it with plastic bottles and tubes. Improvements can be made but a stroke of genius is what we need. Let’s tell him how to improve and what we need by giving inputs to make it a safer and feasible product that someday we may find it safe enough to use for our application be it commercially or leisurely. Great idea but let’s polish it.

@@tailyfale I dont see how these would cause an embolism which at best could mena some sort of air or gas in the bloodstream. This is basically a mini oxygen tank with air rather than proper oxygen. At best it lets you swim for longer underwater, at worst it just doesnt work. The warning warns not to go deep under 4 meters due to how the tank functions. I really dont see the issue. This is a nice toy for a shallow pool or recretional swim near the beach.
@diver0129
@diver0129 4 жыл бұрын
@@boguslav9502 You have no idea what you are talking about. This most definitely is dangerous. 1. The greatest difference in pressure is the first atmosphere. Meaning, in the first 33 feet of water, you are doubling the pressure as well as the amount of compressed gas (doesn't matter what kind) you can fit in your lungs. 2. If the diver uses this to swim to depth, then runs out of gas (Because they will) and holds their breath on the ascent (Because they have no training), boom pneumothorax.

@@diver0129 I havent said anything conroversial... You are responding to nothing basically (Contrary to what you may think I am somewhat read on the topic, to the point htat I grasp the basics) . Read the warning in the video its literally a toy for a shallow pool as I mention. I explicitely say they shouldnt go deep for this reason. I forgot to mention that its not just how the tank functions but hte mechanism you mention of gas compression and subsequent expansion. I honestly wouldnt even use this to dive under 2 meters. Moreso go to a standard pool and just do laps back and forth for fun. It would be dangerous if someone is going to hop in and dive. Again I mention the warning. Personally the warning should be explicit in the video, not in the discription.
