Such intense situations in a single episode. Flokie’s setback is heartbreaking. Especially remembering his joy and excitement running across that long branch in Disneyland. To finally be up in the air like the other little monkeys. The double amputee is amazing on so many levels. You all have the patience of Job. The suspense over whether Teo would ever leave the enclosure was nail biting. Not one, but two sick adults. Great video. Any update on Dirk?

@@sandyfrederick6793 according to a comment from the Foundation, he was being picked on in the other enclosure. Maybe the roughhousing and attempts to get away put to much stress on his legs. He was removed. A commenter on a past video also pointed out he was looking glassy eyed and listless.

Really enjoyed seeing Teo finally go out into James troop with Lychee who was so patient and good with him. Maybe I wouldn't make a good monkey carer because I was itching to grab Teo by the scruff of his furry neck and propel him out into the troop. As it was, he nearly left his tail behind in the gate when he finally consented to step outside. Hopefully Teo is the last of the orphans from last baby season. Also liked seeing a lot of double-amputee Fiona and how she gets along so well in a regular troop. Anyone would think that she was a candidate for a special needs monkey enclosure but she seems perfectly adjusted and does her share of grooming with her stumps. Monkeys are equipped by nature with an extra pair of hands where their back feet should be and I notice that she can grip big pieces of food quite well when she needs to. I liked the visit to sickbay to see two of the patients and hear about the expert diagnosis and treatment by the vets in town. You guys will spend whatever is necessary on vet bills if you think a monkey can benefit from it. Luckiest monkeys in Africa. I put in a bit towards the Sickbay washing machine appeal and I wonder if it has been bought yet. I'd like to visit the new washing machine in a future video if possible.

I do not know if vervets will take an opportunity to bath if given access to water that will inspire them to clean up, as will other primates, and of course I know Floki has some other handicaps that might interfere with his instincts to clean. In most cases, of course, primates do a pretty decent job of grooming and by doing so remove some of the dirt from each other - which, when a individual is separate for health or safety reasons they don't get that care from others. There are primates that as adults swim at least to cool done, so with get a bit of the dirt removed that way too, but we discovered when trying to find a way to offer water In a more fun way than just a big tub, using the solar powered sprinklers sometime used in bird baths or for out door watering of pets when there is no great wat to run plumbing and you do not want to use a powered pump, so soar is much safer. The small primates we have mostly have come to enjoy the fun of drinking the water as spays up in fountains about 6-10 inches high, as well as running through it or rolling around on it which has helped clean more than a few that actually are too old to be bathed and cannot be with others and benefit from social grooming. This are not overly expensive and for those that are not needing the stress cold bathing/water could bring you actually can put the water temperature in as you desire. Some models can sense when an animal is close by and start spraying or you can set them to run intermittently or continuously. That clip of the clicking noise you heard is actually a good one to train people to listen for. Most are familiar with the sound of air being sucked in if its a large wound that violates the thoracic cavity, and ends up with a lung collapse, which sadly means an animal doesn't make it long. But that licking sound means that you have a smaller wound that is allowing air to be sucked in but in slower amounts which usually gives you a good chance to do something. On thing you can do, if you cannot immediately get to the vets is what we call a 3 sided accusive dressing made from plastic wrap, like food wrap and duct tape. You will need to be able to shave the fur off as you do need to seal the tape against the skin but if you apply several layers of wrap cut about 2 inches wider than the wound and then tape it down and seal 3 sides. When we are working on animal rescue missions after disasters we see many chest injuries and this is a simple but effective way to allow then to breath without pulling in more air because as the breath in the plastic warp is sucked up against the wound and blocks the air from getting into the area around the lungs, and when they breathe out, free air in chest can be pushed out and escapes through the 3rd untaped side, meaning that in each breathing cycle they are getting rid of the air that had gathered in the chest that can crush the lungs and heart and then it cannot get back into the chest as free air when they breath in. Its not going to repaired it and the will still needs surgery as soon as possible but it works like having a chest tube placed without having to perform such a procedure out in the field, and as long as there are not complications like hemorrhage with blood entering the chest, the animal can breathe much more comfortable, and stably even if you have some hours ahead of yuo before you can get to a surgery I hope that he will pick up and feel better and start mending in another day or so. Surgical procedures on the chest can be long and hard on an animal and the anesthesia tougher than some used for others procedures. Its not uncommon that, just like humans after surgery especially one where they had to be intubated, they not only have a sore throat - which tells them nor to eat while it hurts so they many drink but not eat. Of course he may also have some level of nausea from not just the injury but from the anesthesia which could take a few days to pass and many primates tend to be GI sensitive to antibiotics, which may also make him feel like he should not eat. That can make it hard of course as nutrition plays an important role in healing but primates tend to be very decent healers, often when even left alone out in the bush and only cared for by troop members. They tend to have a very good awareness of what their body needs and does not. If he is not into eating solids, have you tried things like soften food in formula? Most likely he is eating slowly and very small amounts due to a sore throat and that should go away quickly. Its always hard when you have to find a way to really get antibiotic down a wild animal and one benefit of long acting antibiotic injections that are time release to cover them for 2 weeks

most of ours like swimming, unfortunately they also like destroying and unless you secured the solar section inside some kind of fenced area, buried the pump and motor under ground with the outlet into the swimming area it wont stand a chance, then you also have the problem of cleaning it if anything is secured. On the medical treatment side, you cant just work on a primate it needs to be anesthetized first and as our vets are on 20 minutes away in a rush its far more practical to get them there, than encourage people to do procedures they not accustomed to doing, when running a sanctuary you need to consider what would happen if you not there.

I know when we have Super Picky children who can't swallow pills and refuse to take the liquid suspension antibiotics we have used those things. What about putting the sick monkey on bananas/papaya/mango/greens only for a while? I eat a frugivore diet because I had terrible digestive issues, and at first I ate very simply. Fruits have probiotics, they are the most easily digested too. Nuts and seeds I could not eat at all at first and never combined with fruit. Think about it, in nature the monkeys would never have fruit and nuts together and in fact, getting into nuts off a tree takes incredible work (because the husk), it's kind of like desperate food. Like to me just something so simple could actually be the solution as it was with me. In ideal conditions in nature monkeys would feed off one kind of fruit tree and then be full and move onto the next kind later when hungry again, always preferring fruit as first choice since it is optimal. There is all the essential fatty acids and proteins in fruit in just the right amounts. Just a thought.
