And how can we forget about beautiful Belle ? It makes me laugh when you see the VO’s asking for money for the blind monkey over in the islands of the South Pacific and make it seem that a blind monkey has no chance unless you send them a lot of $$ ! My response is to check out the VMF library and see what is possible !!

I absolutely agree with you Jim. The VMF are amazing with what they can do for special needs primates, they pour their heart and soul into saving the animal and give it 24/7 medical care as well as TLC when they are critical….I believe the TLC is just as vital as the medical care. I despise the VO’s who film the macaques. They act like care for them but they injure them to create drama for views on their KZbin channel…they don’t care if it’s a baby or a pregnant or nursing mom they are injuring or killing. It truly makes me sick to my stomach. I’ve even seen them on their videos purposely wait to feed a starving orphan baby (whose mother they probably killed) when they see an alpha male or female watching the baby because the VO’s know the rules…especially the primate rules higher ranking eat first and if you eat before them they will attack and even kill regardless of it being a baby or adult. It’s sickening. And yes when they try to raise money for sick or injured monkeys… I truly don’t believe the money goes toward the care of that monkey..it goes in their pocket. I wish KZbin would shut down all of their videos, I’ve tried reporting them many times and I know others have as well but nothings been done. Sorry I wrote so much…Have a wonderful day. 😊

@@harassarah9551 I agree Sarah, this organization is the best! In Ft Lauderdale where I live there are Vervet monkeys. The local colleges study and take care of them. Some idiot brought them over for a "zoo" when it didn't Work out, left them! Just bye bye! Now they have a specific area that is fenced but people steal the babies!

I love Thursday evenings! The video goes so quickly. Happy Birthday Dave and to anyone (monkey or human) who also has a birthday. A question...what does the fur on juveniles and adult vervets feel like? On their backs and heads it looks almost wiry but that could be a trick of the light.

I keep meaning to ask….is Hawk still around? She’s usually at almost every baby integration but I haven’t seen her, or maybe she hasn’t been on video. I figured I would ask, I always thought it was pretty cool that one of the bandits was entertained by watching the orphans integration into their new troop with their new Mom and Hawk always sat awfully close to the humans with no fear like she knew she could trust you guys. Animals amaze me everyday with the compassion they have and show, love, grief, loyalty…every emotion we have they have. 💗

Looks like Pokie got a good wack on her/his head as well as the tail. At first I wondered if the 'found by the side of the road' might have meant a good while ago as she was seeming very used to people and not acting at all like a wild baby with just a tail injury who should be very upset with people around. However that dosing off as she is doing in the middle of chewing it pretty telling of a concussion. Since primates can fall asleep in any position in a tree or against mom and don't need to lay down to sleep, dosing off sitting up is not always a for sure sign of a head injury but in the middle of a mouthful of food is, Little eating machines that they are, food in the mouth is going to overcome taking a nap unless that is a nap cause by brain trauma and swelling, or worse that tail injury is deep enough that bacteria has gotten into the CSF and she is showing early signs of infection. She probably should get a course of antibiotics anyway if the bone or hard covering over the canal is exposed anyway, as well as anti inflammatory meds. Suzie impresses me as a monkey that has had some experience with moneys and not always been a pet or something as she seems to have social skills that she would have had to learn from having been in a troop at some point. Is it possible that she was target as a possible breeder monkey? I know many of the breeders that we see that they try to smuggle in are not taken as babies - as you do not know what a baby will grown up and become and often babies raised by humans don't make great mothers. We are seeing more young adult females being smuggled in for the purpose of breeding babies for the pet trade as breeding rather than catching and smuggle a baby they think is the more lucrative way to go about it in the US. Few times we get someone that will tells us how this works they say that the people that sell them adult females to use for breeding purposes they supposedly monitor local troops and look for lower ranked females' that are pretty calm, and laid back, can be conditioned with food easily and are then easier to handle once they trap them easily without too much fighting as the monkey is conditioned to trust them and as they are usually lower ranked the food is much better than what they would get with the troop and learns to be lured a bit away from the troop so that they are trapped and taken away before the troop notices or reacts. What we see by the time they get to the sanctuary is usually a adult that is not overly afraid of human but is immediately trying to be social with any nearby primates and seems to have all the necessary skills for coping in the wild and as they supposedly are low ranked where they came from, which seems to be true, as they are exceptionally aware of showing their intention to any other monkey that comes near, and are very submissive, and are not demanding any special treatment that a monkey that was higher ranked would expect. This is of course mostly monkey smuggled out of Indonesia but smugglers will be smugglers and I don't doubt that since there is becoming more and more horrible people wanting to run baby monkey mills (just like puppy mills) that if there is a market for a breeding female of African Species the 'how to do it' information gets shared. And unfortunately there are too many people that thinking buying a baby monkey that was bred to be sold - as if the mother and baby had any idea that was the case, its not as if the baby was "grabbed away from its mother and smuggle, so its not a bad thing right?" These idiots that buy these babies from the monkey mills when its found they have a monkey and its confiscated are shocked when they get told there really is no difference, as mom is drugged up a bit once the baby has nursed for 2 days and the baby is puled offer her while it screams for its mother and mom's too groggy to do anything and that is why when they got a 3 day old monkey they were up all night for weeks with a monkey that would not stop crying. There are Facebook groups full of the "knowledge" that when you get a baby money they are born to cry for the first month and you have to just let them cry it out - they treat it like its normal and never bother to tell adopters that its crying for its mother around the clock for a month. Not sure what we will even do to stop this, as even puppy mills.. shut down one and too pop up and monkey babies yield a lot bigger payments then puppies. I am glad your going to reassess the baby, especially as you are all sort of real baby experts. Vets sometimes are not really aware of just what the potential is for a baby primate to recover much better from head injuries even than human babies and also how a baby with residual problems if adopted into a troop that has enough potential to understand the social rules and get along will actually do very well even with residual motor issues or eye sight problems, and often troops with adapt the protections and care for a baby that is slow in hitting milestones or is a bit clumsy or does not climb as well they generally make exceptions. We reversed out policy of automatically looking at medical tests and diagnosis and went to a 'full inclusion' approach, sort of based on the human idea in education of least restrictive learning environment, and started treating any but those extremely disabled (not walking, totally blind and such) and putting them through the baby integration program figuring that they would show us if they could not manage it, and then we would adjust the plan or if there were no other monkeys that would accept them. Since we started doing that, of course we have had some that just could not manage and had to go into a more special need environment but only once have we had one time that a disability make it so that they baby was rejected by other monkeys. So its always worth once they have healed a bit giving them a chance. I have always wondered, since its rare that any of your troops ever see a baby that is born to the troop and becomes more and more populated by orphans arrive by delivery of humans so someone gets a baby if they have eventually started to think that's where babies come from. If they do, have you seen any signs that they are starting to have social rules around who can be a mom by selecting her baby and if they are developing their own rules about it. I know that often who is let in to meet babies are often ones you know have been good fosters and such and if they have started to figure out how one can get selected? I can't imagine that this would not some how become part of how life works for them. That actually would be a good bit of research to look into. I know we have seen them aware when you start setting up and preparing and integration cage that the troop, especially females tend to gather, seeming to know babies are coming, and the other thing I have noticed is, since you don't usually allow alphas to be fosters as that would take them out of the troop proper for too long, that the alpha female tends to be around to meet the babies but seems to show little interest in waiting around for a chance to get in and get a baby almost like she has figured out that the alpha does not get a baby. Not sure about vervets but in some primate species that next alpha to take over is usually the last daughter born to the current alpha, if it works like that for vervets what do they do when an alpha has not raised a daughter?
