I worked for Joe for a short while and definitely an interesting person. Joe was a HUGE Ray Charles fan. When working on one of Joe's albums Ray Charles came out with a new album and Joe came to the studio with a copy of it. I was asked to take Joe to one of the empty studios and hook up a record player and play the album for Joe. We''re in this tiny control room and I put on the record and Joe was just rocking back and forth to the beat. As soon as it finished Joe said play it again. Now Joe is sitting in the floor getting into listening to Ray Charles and every now and then saying "sing it to me Ray, sing it" as he hung on every phrase Ray sang. I thin Joe had me play the album about five times before he was satisfied.

Leon Russell a great hero of mine - especially MDaE! I might be wrong - but I think on this recording the keys were played by the incredible Chris Stainton and backed by Joe's Grease Band (which also included Bruce Rowland on drums and Henry McCullough - later with Wings - on guitar)!! Chris was on the MDaE tour - but also played with just about everyone of significance in the era!😊😊

McCartney said the song was inspired by one of the fans who hung around outside McCartney's St John's Wood home, and who had broken in, later revealed to be Diane Ashley. She said: We were bored, he was out and so we decided to pay him a visit. We found a ladder in his garden and stuck it up at the bathroom window which he'd left slightly open. I was the one who climbed up and got in. She then opened the front door to let the others inside. In addition to clothes, the fans also stole a number of photographs. (from wikipedia)

The Joe Cocker arrangement to With a little help from my friends was amazing! Joe Cocker version of She came in from the bathroom is very true to the Beatles original. The song was a Lennon and McCartney credited song, but was written and sung by Paul McCartney and is about the time a female fan broke intp Paul's St. John's Wood home in London through his bathroom window. He still owns this property which is quite close to Abbey Road Studios!

The album draws from rock and soul artists from bandmate and producer Leon Russell such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Traffic and more. The musicians/singers contributed as the writers of the songs covered were Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, Isaac Hayes, and many others. 💫🎤🎸🎹🥁🪘🎷🎵🎶🔥☮🎧

The original Beatles version is on Side 2 of their Abbey Road album and is the fifth song of the album's climactic medley, immediately following "Polythene Pam". After “Here Comes The Sun” and “Because,” the remainder of side two consists of a 16-minute medley of eight tracks consisting of a number of short songs and song fragments (known during the recording sessions as "The Long One"), recorded over July and August and blended into a suite by Paul McCartney and album producer George Martin. Some songs were written (and originally recorded in demo form) during sessions for the White Album and Get Back / Let It Be, which later appeared on Anthology 3. While the idea for the medley was McCartney's, Martin claims credit for some structure, adding he "wanted to get John and Paul to think more seriously about their music". The first track recorded for the medley was the opening number, "You Never Give Me Your Money". McCartney has said the band's dispute over band manager Allen Klein and what McCartney viewed as Klein's empty promises were the inspiration for the song's lyrics. However, author Ian MacDonald, in his 1997 book Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties, doubts this, given that the backing track, recorded on 6 May at Olympic Studios, predated the worst altercations between Klein and McCartney. The track is a suite of varying styles, ranging from a piano-led ballad at the start to arpeggiated guitars at the end. Both George Harrison and John Lennon provided guitar solos, with Lennon playing the solos at the end of the track. This song transitions into Lennon's "Sun King" which, like "Because", showcases Lennon, McCartney and Harrison's triple-tracked harmonies. Following it are Lennon's "Mean Mr. Mustard" (written during the Beatles' 1968 trip to India) and "Polythene Pam". These in turn are followed by four McCartney songs, "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" (written after a fan entered McCartney's residence via his bathroom window), "Golden Slumbers" (based on Thomas Dekker's 17th-century poem set to new music), "Carry That Weight" (reprising elements from "You Never Give Me Your Money", and featuring chorus vocals from all four Beatles), and closing with "The End". "The End" features Ringo Starr's only drum solo in the Beatles' catalogue (the drums are mixed across two tracks in "true stereo", unlike most releases at that time where they were hard-panned left or right). Fifty-four seconds into the song are 18 bars of lead guitar: the first two bars are played by McCartney, the second two by Harrison, and the third two by Lennon, and the sequence is repeated two more times. Harrison suggested the idea of a guitar solo in the track, Lennon decided they should trade solos and McCartney elected to go first. The solos were cut live against the existing backing track in one take. Immediately after Lennon's third and final solo, the piano chords of the final part of the song begin. The song ends with the memorable final line, "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make".

I always objected to '' You Never Give Me Your Money " being thought of as part of the medley because not only is it a proper length there is several seconds break at the end ! Sun King starts the short songs rolling into one another and the medley ends with The End. 🤡

This song was a part of a medley of songs on the last Beatles album they recorded, Abbey Road. A big chunk of the second side is a series of songs that run together and create one giant opus, it includes "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Sun King", "Mean Mr. Mustard", "Polythene Pam", "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window", "Golden Slumbers", "Carry That Weight" and finally, "The End" which features Ringo's only drum solo of the entire Beatle catalog (which I just learned) and finishes with the poignant lyric: "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make"...the perfect coda for The Beatles, because that's all they wanted to do with their music. At the very end, is a bit of fun that Paul recorded titled "Your Majesty" which was originally sandwiched between Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam, but after remixing, it was just tagged onto the end of the album...a tiny little post script. THIS is a clip which includes the entire medley as it appears on the album. I doubt you'll do a reaction to it, since it's 16+ minutes long, but it's worth a listen...it's very beautiful, full of emotion and was created as a collaboration by all members of the band, each providing some innovative stuff. They had basically mastered being Beatles, and were ready to move on to solo careers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHS5pHWFn8p3sM0

The reason you love Joe is because his pianist and the arranger of his music was the one and only Leon Russell. He initiated the Tulsa sound and was a vital figure of the LA crew of session musicians noted as the Wrecking Crew. He then went on to organize Joe’s tours and backing up band. Check out Leon. When you listen to the Beatles do the entire first half of the Medley that this is part of. Start with You Never Give Me Your Money. Be sure to get the studio recording. 😊

This amazing medley is "You Never Give Me Your Money / Sun King / Mean Mr. Mustard / Polythene Pam / She Came In Through The Bathroom Window / Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End". The End even features a rare drum solo from Ringo! This is followed on the album by the 23 second long final track "Her Majesty". You're gonna love this medley!!! 🎸🥁🎤🔥😎

Nobody does Beatles songs better than the Beatles. But Joe Cocker doesn't really cover them, he turns them into his own. That's the best way to do it if you're going to record someone else's song. Otherwise you could just listen to the original.

Joe Cockers cover of "Feeling Alright" I'd argue is another definitive version....but an original you should definitely do, because I want to see Jays reaction when he hears the original of a sample he'll be familiar with, is "Woman To Woman"

hi Jay and Amber: Paul wrote it after a real-life event: a fan named Diane, who was part of a group of dedicated fans called Apple Scruffs, broke into his St John's Wood home. She later said that the group was bored and decided to visit Paul while he was out. The song appears as the fifth track in the Abbey Road medley. ...those were wild times... (and crazy fans!!!) 😎

When you listen to the Beatles version, you need to do the entire Abbey Road Medley, where one song leads into the next one. Anyone who listens to the songs individually, is completely missing out on the experience that we all had back in the day.

Cocker had a "look"... kinda chubby, kinda wobbly, and with a grimace. Original cast member from the '70s Saturday Night Live, John Belushi did a dead-on impression of Joe. Cocker did SNL back then and Belushi shadowed him on the stage and was a carbon copy. Worth a search and look.

Another Beatles cover that will make you wonder if they are the same song is Miss Tina Turner's cover of their classic "Help". The first time I heard Miss Turner's version, I immediately had to find my album & play the original Beatles 'Help". Thanks for Joe Cocker today 💜

Joe Cocker/Ray Charles,/Bob Seger all have that special growl in their vocals that touches people's spine. Paul McCartney did have a girl crawl through his window, and they had a bare footed, frock wearing hippie came in the studio one day, announced he was "Jesus Christ", so Paul had him sit in the corner out of the way to watch the recording session. Paul had a funky house in London central (John, George and Ringo stuck with the burbs with their wives) with a large circular room with a glass ceiling where he and friends would find some cannabis and say "got to get you into my life".

Paul actually gave this to Joe before the Beatles' version was released (on ABBEY ROAD) because he loved Joe's version of "A Little Help From My Friends." Joe's version of this came out only weeks after ABBEY ROAD released.

Joe Cocker's voice is distinctive and always appealing. I see lotsa suggestions for you to hear his version of The Letter, originally released by The Boxtops in 1967. Both versions are unique and wonderful, but Cockers will make you get up and boogie. You'll love the horns in that one, too. Other great boogie rockers are High Time We Went ❤ from 1972, Cry Me a River (did u do that one already?) and Feelin' Alright, both from his masterpiece album, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, released in 1970. I enjoyed this. Be blessed❤

First, to the best of my knowledge Paul, who wrote "With A Little Help From My Friends", loved Joe Cocker's cover of that tune! Second, do not react to the original version of this song unless you react to it while playing ALL of the Abbey Road medley along with it. These are songs that must be heard together, not one at a time out of order!! Keep up the great work!!

Another Cocker song to hear is You Are So Beautiful. "Bathroom Window" is part of the wonderful and famous Beatles Medley on side two of the Abbey Road album (Yes, albums had sides.). The medley is extraordinary and should be heard as a whole entity. Covers of Beatles songs can be different, but never "better". You should check out the video of Cocker on SNL performing with John Belushi.

Everyone else can educate you on the minutiae of Joe Cocker, the Beatles, the back story, cover songs, debates about favorites…I’m here to highly encourage you to open a treasure trove of rock history from your choice today. Carefully read the names of all the band members on this recording and album. You’ll recognize a few. From that list, follow their individual connections, and then those connections, and then those… This is equivalent to Howard Carter opening King Tut’s tomb. btw- I been checking in since the beginning with the psychedelic brick backdrop. It has been heartwarming to witness an evolution from the naivety in the beginning blossom into growth and maturity in a linear development as your devotion has changed your lives.
