Gee Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were some of the cleanest, meanest guitar players who honed their skills in the 1960's. They were shredding on their instruments in the early '60's - Roy Clark playing Twelve Street Rag on the Jimmy Dean show in the early 60's is a must see. Seeing Roy and Glen play the same guitar at the same time is amazing. Roy had a number of country hits, and was a regular members on the show Hee Haw. The thing about him is if the instrument had strings and you gave him a week he'd not only play it, he'd master it. So many rock, metal and shredders held both them in such high regard if not awe.

Jay and Amber, I'm so grateful you finally got the chance hear the amazing Roy Clark. Even though I'm only 18, I have known about Roy since I was about 4 or 5 years old through watching the show Hee Haw that Roy hosted alongside Buck Owens. I got the chance to meet Roy when I was in 3rd Grade and got to interview him. He was an incredibly humble, kind man and one of the most genuine people I have ever met. I got to be around him several times and visit with him, and I will treasure those memories forever. When Roy passed away in 2018, they played a live version of this song at the end, and it was like watching him perform for us one last time. Not a dry eye in the crowd. Roy was just about the most amazing multi-instrumentalist I think there ever was. He was almost completely self-taught in every instrument he played, and he had such a God-given talent to be able to master any instrument he picked up. He's often extremely underrated in the guitar world because he was Country but also because he infused comedy into his playing and people took him less seriously. Thank you for helping keep his memory alive, and I hope you enjoy diving into more of his music!

Thx for including Roy Clark's massive skills. Roy Clark and Buck Trent did an acoustic banjo duo. Mad priceless skills. Some non PC moments but the music, oh my word, the music!

Great review. Roy Clark is regarded my many as the greatest country guitarist ever. He sings as well. Two songs I know you’ll love are yesterday when I was young and guitar version of rider’s in the sky. These are two of my favorites I would love to see your reaction

Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, and Jerry Reed were three "country" artists that because of their guitar picking styles made all of their songs very unique. They often collaborated with each other on shows back then to have some friendly rivalry but they always seemed to be friends.

Over 500 comments and not one mentioned Hee Haw. At the opening of ever show, it was Roy Clark and Buck Owens "I'm a pickin', and I'm a grinnin'". Roy Clark was indeed a great string instrumentalist. And what makes this rendition of Malaguena is that he's playing it with a single pick instead of finger picks, or his fingernails as a flamenco artist would. And it is indeed a wonderful rendition. Fun fact: Malagueña is thought to originate near Malaga, Spain, and is a popular genre of song and dance in Venezuela.

I just left a similar comment about he and Buck. Skimmed through the rest of the comments to find yours from 20 hours ago as the first other instance of Buck being mentioned. Bravo to you! 🙂

Similar to Flamingo dancing Spanish Guitar music. I'm 70 so I've experienced Roy Clarks complete works. Really underrated by most, but he truly was one of a kind.

Back in the 1960s and 70s I was a radio disk jockey in Albuquerque. Roy was on the bill for one of country road shows my station sponsored. I was there when he played "Malaguena" live onstate with the flu and a 102 degree temperature. Sweating like a stevedore, he played it FLAWLESSLY. Wonderfully nice guy and a towering talent!

Incredible talent and performance! Malagueña is based on an old Spanish folk song. A Malagueña is a female from Malaga, Spain. [Pronounced (Mala-geh-nya) the "e" has an "eh" sound]

Saw Clark at a state fair in mid-1970s when I was a kid. What a talent. ....."Yesterday, When I Was Young" and "Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone" are my faves of his vocal songs. He was also a co-host with Buck Owens of the TV show "Hee-Haw," a rural theme variety show.

One of the greatest guitarists who rarely gets a mention. I remember the first time I ever saw him playing, I was about 12 years old and was just open mouthed at his playing skills.

Well, you don't think about each note while you're playing like that. You develop muscle memory, you learn the song and you become able to play it.

Roy Clark was a genius on many instruments. He was hilariously funny. He could sing like an angel. He was on Hee Haw. My mom and I watched it every week. So many great memories. Definitely check out more from him. Well worth your time.

You should do his song "Yesterday, When I was Young." He sings in that one. So good! Glen Campbell promised never to play Maleguena (Roy's signature piece), just as Roy promised never to play William Tell (Glen's signature piece). Two good friends. Two amazing guitarists.
