The cambia which is right under the bark of a tree is what carries nutrients and etc. to the top of the tree and all the branches. The tree trunk can be completely hollow and the tree will not only live, but be healthy. The real problem is that the tree will not be able to withstand the same amount of high winds, heavy ice buildup and etc. that it could if the interior was solid wood.
