Nemophila and Band Maid have completely rejuvenated my love for music again. I am also a drummer and Tamu (Hemophila) and Akane (Band Maid) are both considered some the top female drummers in the world !!!!! I had never been a metal fan but when I heard these girls I was blown away. They are so technically proficient and heavy but also very melodic. Also...the lead vocalist is off the charts. Wait till you hear her in the power ballad Odyssey .

Nemophila - "baby blue eyes" flower, "Rurikarakusa" in Japanese; grows in N-America and is appreciated in Japan (see "Hitachi Seaside Park"). The band was formed in 2019, originally as a "session" brought together by... Mayu - the vocalist (ex- Lipstick band); Haraguchi-san - (ex- HöLDERLINS band) bass, backing vocals, was Mayu's friend and colleague from Music College; Tamu Murata - drums, backing vocals, one the most respected session musician in Japan (countless bands), with also her own original carrier; she's also the wife of Akira Yamaoka, musician/composer, known especially for his videogames OSTs, in particular for "Silent Hill"; Saki (ex - "Mary's Blood" band for a decade, "Destrose", and others), she's a "young sacred monster" in J-metal) guitar, backing vocals, and... Hazuki (KOIAI "Dark Indigo" / Li-sa-X, Disqualia bands) - guitar, backing vocals; both, Saki and Hazuki have a lot of experience. Unfortunately, Saki left the band in march 2024, after the Budokan concert, thinking that her contribution was enough after more than 4-5 years, pursuing her - successful - solo carrier, and then she became a member of Like-an-Angel band. The band continues in the 4 members form, with Mayu starting to add guitar bits while Haraguchi-san's bass, and Hazuki's guitar becomes more prominent. Nemophila, with their self-declared "Jigoku no Yurufuwa" (soft and fluffy hell) general metal-rock style, made an amazing fandom impression during the pandemic, thru KZbin clips... ...so far about 50 Western/Japanese awesomely bonkers covers, and about 40 original, freakishly insane good songs (singles, EPs - including the JPURecords' Extended Edition of "Oiran", 3 albums - "Revive", "Seize The Faith", "Evolve"; EP - "Beautiful Days"). New album "Apple of my eye" for January 2025 (10 songs, containing the 3 from "Beautiful Days" EP). Discography, alphabetical order: 01. ADABANA - 徒花 - "Fruitless/seedless flower" 02. ALIVE 03. AMA-TE-RAS (Amaterasu goddess) 04. Another Story (ballad) 05. A Ray Of Light 06. Back into the wild 07. Beautiful Days (ballad) 08. Blooming 09. Breaking Out 10. Change the World 11. Creature 12. Hōzuki - 鬼灯 - "Demon Light" - "Winter cherry" / "Japanese lantern" plant 20. HYPNOSIS 21. Justice 22. Life (ballad - their "official anthem") 23. MONSTERS 24. Night Flight (electro-rock song, one of their firsts, used as half-time breakout) 25. now I here (ballad) 26. ODYSSEY (ballad) 27. OIRAN - "Courtesan" (their first original song, in february 2020) 28. OSKR - "OShiKuRa manju" (children's song-game of pushing outside of a circle) 29. PROGRESS 30. RAITEI - 雷霆 - "Thunder" 31. REVIVE 32. RISE 33. Rock’n’Roll Is? (an homage to famous rock bands/artists; the lyrics/melody and style of play are Easter Eggs) 34. Rollin’Rollin’ 35. Seize the Fate 36. Soaring ~to be continued~ (instrumental) 37. SORAI - "Autumn wind" (was supposed to be the original name for the band) 38. STYLE (rap-metal song) 39. - 群青 40. Waiting for you 41. YELL 〜軌跡〜 ("Kiseki - Trajectory", ballad) 42. ZEN ________ Unreleased songs on CDs: - Another Story... written during the COVID pandemic, with the purpose of lifting the spirit; performed only once on stage for a live stream at the end of December 2020... but - according to Saki - "it's part of 'Cheer to Art, Tokyo Project' (started by Tokyo Metropolitan Government to offer place for artists to upload their work...since all lives, concerts, events and exhibitions had been suspended, all venues had been closed"; was posted on KZbin, on this governmental channel: アートにエールを!【音楽 1ch】; although is no longer there, there are some reactions to it, just search "NEMOPHILA / AnotherStory". It's also kept on WebArchive: watch?v=WWSFd4N4pjU - Creature, Breaking Out... released only on Revive (It's Sooooo Nice To Finally Meet You!!!!!) Blu-ray; they are performed sometimes in concerts; Breaking Out... released during their first live stream in 2020, and Rizing Nemo in 2023; - Blooming... released only on the official Nemophila KZbin channel, and performed sometimes in concerts. - Ultramarine/Gunjō performed in the second part of the 19 June 2021 stream.

Another band likely on your list, Band Maid, also has a drummer inspired by MTH's drummer. And a final band on your list, Hanabie, begun as a cover band of MTH. As you go deeper into the rabbit hole you are going to run into a good number of shared members, artists from one band that used to be in another, webs of inspiring each other etc. Another part of the fun!

Other great all-female bands from Japan and some recommended videos: - LOVEBITES - Holy War, live 2020 (Metal revival. Think Iron Maiden plus Mötorhead plus Malmsteen (x2), fronted by a female Dio) - TRIDENT - Ambivalent (Hard Rock power trio who have been taking their sound in new directions) - HAGANE - HeroTime (Power Metal band of teenage guitar phenom SAKURA YOSHIDA) - GACHARIC SPIN - I Wish I (impossible to categorize, the band has been playing and evolving for 15 years. Their current, six-piece lineup is their best. UNLUCKY MORPHEOUS - Black Pentagram, live. (A co-ed band combining a killer twin-guitar attack, a violin, and the inimitable FUKI on vocals.)

Tons of great bands from Japan. Been listening to J-rock/metal for about 15 years and there's just a lot to get into and like; so many interesting style combinations and creativity, these ladies are one of my favorites. Another band I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is Unlucky Morpheus. Check out their track, "Unending Sorceress." They are mostly harder metal with some lighter hard rock/slightly poppy bits here and there, but all with a Neo-classical undertone. The real kicker is Jill, their super virtuoso violinist that plays with them.

What people seem to miss about this song is the lyrics. It’s attributed to “She Knows”, and not only does she know, but it illustrates just how the west and the east aren’t so different today at all. Mayu has an interesting voice, but I don’t like screams for the sake of it. Their early stuff, including Dissension, was organic and a perfect blend though. Since she started Nemophila, Mayu has put in a monumental effort to improve as an artist, and she has my eternal respect for that. Some girls wander into the limelight by mistake but she had a plan and she’s followed through, and continues on her path.
