I have the Bosch 12 volt 125mm sander. It comes with a dust bag. It’s best feature is that the sanding pad stops really quickly when switched off so you can set down at once. Downside is battery life. This sits on the bench with the dust bag attached and is great for small jobs. Still need the corded sander for larger work.😂
@ProjectAnubisUSA12 күн бұрын
The lack of a dust bag might indicate that it’s required to be hooked to a vacuum to prevent overheating and perhaps lacking a cooling fan, hence Lower profile. All educated speculation from what I can see (no vent holes, no bag) since I haven’t actually seen it apart or in an exploded view. I believe the 3m sander overheated if not hooked to a vacuum to help cool it down if I recall.
@mau471312 күн бұрын
I am also guessing its because these are meant for automotive and dust collection on that stuff is way more important for lung health since its more harsher material.
@bdybybb11 күн бұрын
In a bodyshop environment sanders never have dust bags. It's rarely dust collection, for the most part you just let the dust fall and wear dust masks. These will be much better without the air discharge from pneumatic sanders that kick up a large cloud.

I just bought the 5.0 mm version last week and it is awesome. If you have been looking at a Mirka, 3M, SurfPrep, or Festool, you know the price of this is actually very good. It is geared toward automotive because it is technically a DA (Dual Action) sander, not a Random Orbit sander. The end result is that is sands about 4 time faster than you are used to as a woodworker. If a dining table top takes you an hour to sand with a random orbit sander, this will be done in 15 minutes. If you are not careful, you can ruin your project, however if you have skills with a sander, this has been a beast and I love mine. Never going back to corded sanders again!
@manuelvazquez503112 күн бұрын
Do you mind saying the difference between a dual action sander and a random orbital sander?
@chainring_tattoo12 күн бұрын
I just looked through all Milwaukee documentation on this sander and did not see anywhere where it was referred to as a dual action sander. It was consistently referred to as a random orbit sander. The product manual also makes several references to the sander being used for woodworking. The product manual does not lean towards automotive use versus woodworking. Interestingly, the manual says that you can't wet sand with this sander, which IS something you might do in automotive work. So I question Milwaukee's strategy of marking these sanders to automotive industry versus woodworkers.
@ericmann17818 күн бұрын
@@chainring_tattoo I suppose it might be because of the absolutely poor dust extraction with a bag. They realized their sander would be the butt of every joke and just pretended it didn't exist by advertising it to automotive, knowing damn well every woodworker would still want their hands on one. Now we can all have petty arguments fighting amongst one another about "yeah but Milwaukee marketed these towards automotive so you're argument doesn't make sense" vs "yeah but it's still an orbital sander", instead of everyone just admitting the simple fact, Milwaukee made a cordless sander with the worst dust extraction in the industry, unless you use a vacuum.
@AndrewShively-bk8no6 күн бұрын
I also bought the new m18 sander and was underwhelmed, was considering the m12’s due to bigger pad and form factor. Also, as you mentioned just seems more modern. The m18 is also loud as crap. So loud that I actually felt bad for my neighbors.
@DavidATakes12 күн бұрын
Thanks for the review Matt. I am heavily invested in the Milwaukee M18 and M12 platforms but for some reason I'm uninspired by these. That may be in part that I have both of the Festool ETS EC 150 sanders. Even if I didn't have those, I would still pay up for the Festool sanders again. It appears, comparing the designs, that the Festool sander would be a more center balanced sander than the Milwaukees. I'm also one of those who doesn't need a battery on any dust extracted tool. Out of everything, that is the real dealbreaker for me personally.

Great video brother. I’ve been considering buying one of these because I have a front clip to sand and paint for my son’s truck. I thought dang that would be awesome for my wood working stuff but then posed the question of why don’t you see folks use da sanders on wood? Couldn’t really find much and any review out there on this new m12 is in auto body. Which I get is what the design was for. But why not wood? Overall what I have gathered is those da style sanders are just more aggressive, which I ain’t mad about, they are speed adjustable and also controllable with the switch paddle. But overall great review and comparison, exactly what I’ve been waiting on someone to do. Of course my fellow Arkansan comes through! Keep on with the great work brother. Also thanks for your service as an Arkansas State Trooper.

@2:40, it seems that when not under load, the pad can accelerate until matching the motor rpm. Those kinetic energy accumulated on the pad will destroy wood surface in a second and cut skins like an angle grinder. That's why I tossed the Ryobi to garbage and switched to festool.
@G.I.JeffsWorkbench12 күн бұрын
Go big Red. No surprise. MKE’s practice seems to be watching competitors struggle w/ new tools, the sick their engineers on improving their competitors’ designs. I don’t think Festool needs to worry, but Mirka & 3M might. There are folks who just can’t get on board w/ “paddle” sanders. Others just can’t get on board w/ cordless sanders (wood shops more than body shops). The cheapest Festool accessory I own, and wouldn’t do without, is the 5-pack of velcro straps that secure the cord to the dust extractor hose. Problem solved without the need to go further in debt to batteries.

The probably don't come with a dustbag much like the Festool ETS EC 150 doesn't come with a dustbag versus the Festool ETS 150 - one has an internal design that blows the dust out of the sander while the other needs an extractor to properly pull the dust out.

Great review. Wish you would have also done the vibration test on the new M18 sander so we could see the difference. Maybe you could do a video short on that? I have reached out to Milwaukee to ask them why they aren't marketing these sanders towards woodworkers. Maybe they'll respond quicker to you. I'd love to hear their thought process on this. I have plenty of M12 batteries so battery time isn't a concern for me. The only thing I didn't like was how poor dust extraction is without an extractor hooked up. But I'd probably use an extractor in most cases. I also have a downdraft table. People are complaining about the price but the Mirka and Festool sanders are double the price. The 3M sander, which I believe you have, is about $70 more. How does it compare vibration wise? And I'd be curious to know how the better sanders from Bosch and Makita stack up. You're doing a great job. Keep it up!

Cordless is perfect for a small shop. Even with the hose on it. Vac hose doesn't snag like a cord does, but small shops always have your scraps and tools closer to where you're working, and cords snag so bad in those conditions. Cordless is the way to go in small shops. As counterintuitive as that sounds.

No dust bag because they are for automotive. For taking out orange peel or sanding primer. You would not run them in this situation without dust extraction. That's also why it is m12, it's very light for sanding panels on a vehicle and not a flat horizontal surface like 90% of woodworking sanding. And just like auto sanders they are 6 inch vs 5 inch like the m18. Good demo tho and the vibration exhibit was very impressive. Thanks for the video.
@brandonrippeonphoto9 күн бұрын
no dust bag probably means there’s no internal fan for extraction (requiring external extraction). run it without a hose or bag and see if it’s moving any air out of the dust port
@terrydanks12 күн бұрын
What, IMO, is really needed is a system that allows a hose connected to dust extraction that also delivers power. Like every built-in home vac that powers a motorized head for carpeting. Guess that puts me in the "why cordless if it's connected to a dust ext. hose anyway" camp.

is Milwaukee going after Festool? Seems like it and thats a good thing for half the price

You should compare it to the Mirka. I love my Mirka sander with the Hepa dust collector, but 95% of my tools are Milwaukee

If you’re hooking up a dust extractor, then you might as well get a corded sander and never worry about batteries.

Would be nice if Milwaukee made a corded version of those two new sanders to compete against Festool. They look great, and I don't really need cordless all that often.

Agreed, that would be amazing!

Need a corded version, that way my dust extractor can turn off when I turn off my sander

They need a adapter to let you plug it in

The M12 line from Milwaukee gets looked down on a lot but there are a lot of quality tools there.
