I'm from the US, but now I'm living in the UK. I took the Amtrak once from Atlanta to New Orleans, and I have to say the added time is so worth it. The people, the scenery, the comfort, and the way the Amtrak workers really seem to believe in it. Not to mention you had me tearing up with homesickness at the sight of the Mississippi river... God was blessing you with that sunset too, so beautiful. Thanks for sharing

Hi, Louis! You arrived in NAY PER VILLE!! Lovely little wealthy suburb of Chicago....I have been on that train and in Union Station soooo many times in my life...I would have flipped a lid if I looked up and saw the lot of you waiting for your train!! I am also so very happy that you were able to sit on that train and experience the quiet, natural beauty of my beloved Midwest Region of the USA. Her beauty is not as GRAND as, say the mountains of Colorado or the ocean of California, but her beauty is outstanding, nonetheless!! Safe travels and peace.

Louis. The Amish do have cells - at least some of them, but they charge them on car batteries. They don't want wires connecting them to the outside world. This is a fairly recent concession to the modern world. They live as if it's 1799. The Industrial Revolution does not exist to them but the trains do. It's how they travel distances. They lead simple lives, not glamorous or worldly. Most of them are nice people. We've met them in all of our trips. (I traveled by trains for work to get to conferences with my clients who have disabilities.) It's probably like when you worked with kids at the school. Really, thank you for the memories.

I am from Central Pennsylvania where there is a large Amish community. My great-grandfather was Amish, but he never joined the Amish church and in doing so left their way of life. Amish traditions and customs vary from location to location as do their rules on technology. For the Amish, the big thing with technology is that they don't want to be connected with the world. To them, phone and electrical lines do that. Recently, many of the younger Amish in my area have been getting cell phones because no wires connect them. It will be interesting with new WiFi technology to see what the consensus is. Also, if you ever get the chance, try Amish baked goods. They are the best thing you will ever have. Their best treat is called a Whoppie Pie. It's two small chocolate cake/cookies with frosting between. You should give them a try if you ever have the chance.

I live in north-east Indiana, very close to a large amish and mennonite community and had a two amish friends growing up. Most amish anymore (except for the more strict sects) have generators to their house and use cellphones, land phones, electric lighting, etc. A few families that are less strict have a tv for news and a computer. They still don't drive, and often hire someone to drive them or they take a horse and buggy if it's close. One time around Christmas I saw a guy loading an xbox and surround sound system into his buggy. I don't personally know any amish with internet but if they can have a phone and go somewhere with wifi or on school computers, you could possibly have an amish follower. There's very little difference between amish life and life with technology. They just live with a strong belief in simplicity and humility. Just me knowing a smattering of their beliefs makes me think you would enjoy a chat. You should visit one of the amish communities sometime.
