I was craving pastelon but was feeling lazy so I made canoas instead-split the plantain down the middle but not the whole way thru so that it looks like a canoe fry it making sure to get hot oil in the middle so that it cooks in the middle then when it's done you fill it with the "meat" add cheese if u want and enjoy! They're so good!

my colombian ass loved this! plantain is my favorite thing in the planet 🙈 some recipes for you guys to try: 1. Plátano en tentación: Plantain cooked in water initially and then cooked in a "panela" syrup with cinnamon 2. Add it to every soup (green plantain only), but never cut it with a knife. Cut it with a wooden spoon 3. Plátano al horno: pop it in the oven (wrapped in aluminum foil) but cut it a little and stuff it with cheese and bocadillo (guava candy thingy) 4. Aborrajados: cook them in oil at a low temp until soft and then crush them (like when you make patacones/tostones) and then fill them with cheese and bocadillo o with a meaty guiso. Close them up and fry at a high temp 5. PLEASE add it to your lentils 😍

PR here!! Love this video, if I find some vegan mean in the island will try it. I have some tips for you, After peeling the plantain you want to cut it in half and then into slices, it will make it easier to fry evenly. When you go to fry the plantain you want to use more oil because it gives you an even coloring. I suggest you use a mandolin to slice the plantain (which is not necessary, we do not use them here to cut our plantain but your slices are a bit too thick for the pastelon) because when you leave it too thick it’s a bit tougher to cut in to it when you go to eat it. Remember that it’s fry and then put the oven. I know you said you don’t like it too sweet but 2 or 3 days more (depending on our weather) would have given it a better perfect texture and flavor. NOW you CAN definitely cut those Green plantains with a knife, when you took out that potato peeler... I almost had a heart attack. You can try to do your version of canoas (yellow plantain) (I think you would love those). Also try arañitas (green plantain)(fun way to make you tostones, you where half way there with the fritters). I don’t know if you know what mayoketshup is but in the island is a must with our tostones (I bet you can make your own version of that). Also sofrito will make your world go round!! We use it to make our beans, stew, our ground meet for lasagna pastelon canoa,etc. I think you’ll love it it’s all plant-based.
@marilynnesmith87784 жыл бұрын
I’m sure the vegan meat was seasoned. But for a true P.R “pastelon”, I will use “sofrito” and a Sazon for seasoning.

Im from Puerto Rico born and raised and I simply loved your recipe. Puerto Ricans don't use enough vegetables in our diets (which we should) and your recipe brings that aspect to it. Try blending cilantro, green peppers, garlic, sweet peppers with a little bit of oil or water and add just a tad of oregano to it, then try using that sofrito in your meatless meat. You will get this delicious moisture that will resemble the traditional pastelon meat, but please dont remove any of the ingredients, this looks absolutely delicious... thank you!!!!

Hey love. To peel green plantain prepare them the same as ripe ones. With the ends cut and a slit down the arched back of the plantain. Run the tap water as hot as you can stand. Place the slit under the hot water for a few seconds. Then start to run your thumb down the slit as the hot water runs down the opening and it will peel away almost in one piece if you do it right. Or just sit the cut plantains in hot tap water for a few minutes before peeling back with your thumb. That's how most Haitians do it. Big love from Atlanta Georgia.

hello, I love your take on vegan pastelon.There is one appettizer that stands out when you talk about puerto rican recipes. It a crab alcupurria. Its a fritter made from plantians, yautia and potatoes. There are many different fillings. The most popular once are made with pork and beef. Alcupurria is made from root vegetables. There is also yuca filled fritters. Monfongo are very popular. They are mash plantians or any root vegetable that fill with garlic, oil, cilantro and some kind of meat or seafood. Most common are plantian (not ripe) and yuca with pork. I love to see your take on these delicious food. Most of the time the monfongo is serve with chicken stock or something close to it. Everyone has there take on that one. Pasteles another popular dish is made from root vegetables fill with meat and wrap up in banana leaf with parchment paper. It is tied and boil in water with salt for about an hour. Pasteles are also made from yuca(yuca pasteles or empanda de yuca) and this is also fill with pork and wrap with banana leaf and alumium foil and than baked. Some people just wrap the banana leaf and parchment paper and boil it. These are recipes that can easily be converted to vegan. I hope you give it a world.

Oh yes! We caribbeans eat a lot of green and yellow plantains. Fried ripe plantains are usually eaten with food as well as tostones. So good!! You can make these in so many different ways. They are also both eaten boiled (peel first). Once boiled (the green ones)) add some salt, olive oil, and garlic ( I also like to add chopped spinach or cilantro). Work until soft with the hot water until a pureed is formed. So delicious! Can be eaten with anything. Very typical in the Dominican Republic. We called "mangu"" but I make it with a healthy twist. I am St Lucian, we eat lots of green and ripe plantain, the Plantain lasagne looks amaaazing, all 3 of them look great, a must try. I have plantains that are almost ready for harvesting in the back yard, so I can't wait. Great stuff.

Hola (Greetings from Puerto Rico) you added the fresh layers of spinachs & tomatoes, which our typical Pastelón does not have and I loved it! We do add tomatoe chunks and tomato salsa.

I looked up that shredded cheese and it only looks like it's available in the uk. Is there something comparable in the US?

Follow your Heart has a Smoked Gouda. I've heard it pretty good. I hope this suggestion helps. Blessings, Piper

Yeah, check out Tasty's KZbin vegan recipes for options in the US. I think one type of vegan cheese is called Pepper Jack or something
