What you chucked in the garbage was a shunt for that test meter. It was used for checking amp draw in and out of a battery without blowing the meter.

Haven't seen a growler for a long time. I used one at work, a few times, for testing DC exciter generator armatures. One thing that was apparent, was that despite testing as faulty, most often the armature worked perfectly. We always took the test results with a pinch of salt! That's quite a good little haul that Slippers brought in. You guys need to show that fella some grass rat respect! 🌾🐀🌾🌾😁😂😚

That tossed in the trash items is an amp meter shunt to extend the range of the amp meter. Your test could read automotive starter current from the battery using that meter shunt with any amp meter.

The armature tester or growler, just shows how cheap parts are today. Years ago things had to be repaired as they were expensive to replace. I can remember auto electricians testing armatures, re-cutting them on a lathe, replacing the bearings and rebuilding motors and generators. Today just replace it.

That's why older cars are still around. The parts are of higher quality and where made to be fixed if broken. Nowadays it's all throwaway garbage. You'll lucky if a modern car lasts 8 years.

The probes on the armature tester are for "bar to bar" testing. You contact two different bars on the commutator all the way around one pair at a time. It's for testing resistance between the individual coils of the armature, which are very low. A standard ohm meter doesn't read differences in very low resistances finely enough to detect a short in an armature coil. The Hi-Pot meter is like an ohm meter but uses high voltage to stress the electrical insulation in electrical apparatus. You connect the hot lead to the coil(s) and the ground to the frame or shaft, depending on what it is.

The old Toro electrical tester is a Megohmmeter (megger) for 120vac, it tests the resistance of the corded yard tool you plug into it. High resistance or infinity means it's not shorted, low restistance means cord or motor problems and will detect a dead short as well.

When you repair a motor and have to turn down the commutator and under-cut the slots you can check with the growler to make sure there are no shorts between the bars or there are no open or shorted turns. If you place an armature on the growler, plug in and turn on the growler and then lay a hack saw blade parallel on the polls of the armature the hacksaw blade will buzz or growl when the armature is rotated and you come crossed a problem area. You can also use the probes to measure the voltage between each pair of commutator bars as the armature is rotated on the growler. You can make the saw blade buzz if you make a short between a couple of the commutator bars.

What's great about old diagnostic tools is that they are still useful when working on older equipment or when repairing something that has parts unavailable or too expensive to just throw away. They also don't require an internet connection or updating. What's sad is that the newer stuff doesn't teach you some of the basic theory of how things work. If a part is bad just toss it and buy new. Who cares what went wrong? :(

@@johnc4352Thanks for the reply John , you are failing to understand a really basic electrical principle here Bud. If you don't want to listen to my explanation heres one from the manufacture link included "The purpose of a Hipot test is to check for excessive leakage current (not voltage!!!!) flow through a product's insulation. Under normal conditions, any electrical device will produce a minimal amount of leakage current due to the voltages and internal capacitance present within the product. @@johnc4352 Glad you got my point and understand that voltage travels through a load , rather it is only the electric potential difference or electromotive force across a load. What travels through the load is the current characterized as Ampère's force law (1820). Just seems strange that you jumped over my post in the first place if you understood the point I was making. Any how no harm done, best wishes.
