Jules if they keep going up in value like this I will be able to retire soon 🤣🤣🤣😂 .. I think us that have collected for many years probably think they are only a £1 or £10 a book and forget just how collectable they have become over the years .. great video as always ..

Regarding B.S. Johnson's Travelling People: Johnson was an experimental novelist. One of his books was The Unfortunates, published as separately-bound chapters in a box, which could be read in any order. Travelling People was his first novel which he later disowned, so there's been no editions since the 1960s, making it very scarce. With the unexpectedly expensive set of Fleming's James Bond books, I wonder if that was due to media stories about the upcoming bowdlerised versions of Fleming's Bond books that are due to be printed in April - the extra attention may have encouraged some people to go online and look for unexpurgated sets of Bond.

Thanks for the information, that's really useful to viewers. You know, I hadn't thout about the recent Fleming censorship issue having an affect but that would indeed explain things! Great stuff 👍

Another fascinating and often eye-opening video, Jules, and I always look forward to your regular eBay vintage paperback sales roundups. That Dell PBO of Jack Ritchie's A New Leaf And Other Stories is a movie tie-in to the Elaine May comedy starring Walter Matthau, and the cover text states this. However, it sold poorly at the time, probably due in no small part to the curious choice of front cover art which, good as it is, doesn't feature an image from the film and only text referring to this fact. Over the years, Ritchie has become a cult writer - and deservedly so - and the book increasingly uncommon. However, I turned up a mint unread copy over here for pennies, probably because apart from those in the know it is often way underpriced by sellers and dealers. Maybe not for much longer, though!

Great information David, thanks. I thought you might know something about some of mystery books in this selection. I'd really like to do more of these, broken down by genres/publishers/authors. Thanks again👍

Always love when you safari around eBay. Imagine how fun reading those ACE DOUBLES would be. And I really love seeing the early PAN Bonds. I would love them all, but not sure how feasible that would be. Perhaps in my favor is that I’m not so concerned with condition. As long as the covers are intact and legible and pages are not falling out, I’m good. I frame them in archival conservation fashion for display and don’t mind the “well read” look. I’m not much of a collector really, but who doesn’t like to be surrounded by beautiful artifacts? 🗿

Thanks my friend! I always enjoy taking a look at the latest sales and I'm constantly surprised at what some books are selling for. The original numbered Pan Books run is definitely attainable, particularly if you're not to concerned about condition 👍

6:55 No way I'd ever pay that much for an autographed copy, when the autograph cannot even be authenticated! Plus Tolkein was very down on paperbacks as everybody knows.

He certainly was on this particular edition, filled with spelling errors etc . I'm tempted to think it might be real though, just because the copy isn't in great shape anyway and maybe a youngster approached Tolkien and caught him off guard. There is a signed copy in the Bristol Archive which we can compare it to.👍

Amused by this. I was the buyer for the Triad Bond box set. Bought, admittedly, more for the box than the books, which are a trifle tatty. There seems to more than one version of the boxed set: there’s also a smaller boxed set with typography in red, rather than black (and with just four paperbacks), which I managed to find about ten years ago. Can’t find any information about it, and it doesn’t seem to be listed in any of the bibliographies. Have you come across it before? Best wishes, Luke Honey.

Hi Luke, I've not seen a red one but I'm sure there one in black. The boxsets are getting increasingly scarce. Like you say, not for the books, more for the slipcase. I'm certain there is a great website with these all listed on. Graham Rye runs in.👍

@@JulesBurt Thanks. I will have a look. Iain Campbell’s “Ian Fleming: A Catalogue of a Collection” is also useful. I really like those Triad 80s Bond paperbacks- clean design, photographed by Beverley Le Barrow. Have something about them. But as you say, Condition is King.

Those Dick prices are indeed crazy. I have many of his Ace and Daw PBOs and while I did pick them up years ago, they still don't go for that much unless in perfect shape. Most of the rest, like those Vintage reprints, shouldn't go for more than $10 apiece I would think - at least, that's what I've seen them for in actual stores recently. Crazy rich person who just wants an instant collection without the bother I guess. I like that Peake set - I have a lot of Peake, including several editions of the Gormenghast trilogy - most notably a 1st ed hardcover set in great shape - but I wouldn't mind that Penguin one. And I don't know that I have anything signed. Someday. Great stuff as usual.

Excellent video Jules! I wonder what your thoughts/experience is with spotting on the pages/inner cover? Have you had any run ins with it - does it spread (is it a mold/fungus) or do you just accept it and leave it? Is there any remedy for it? Keep up the great work
@JulesBurt
@JulesBurt Жыл бұрын
I have many books with spotting. It is a mould that has developed when the book was in a damp environment at some point. You can usually clean up the covers but inside has had it. If it's really bad, just check the book, if only light you'll be ok as s long as the book is now bone dry👍

@@JulesBurt Thanks Jules good to know! I've always wondered this with old books - is there a process whereby you can 'dry out' a book you are concerned about? Thanks for your thorough response
