I love Seramas they are one of my favorite breeds! I might order Serama eggs too because I can't hatch my own right now. I have 5 Serama hens and 1 rooster but my rooster is sick right now so Im giving him medicine and hoping he gets better! Edit: I ended up ordering 8 eggs and they came in yesterday im really excited they sent 12 and none were broken! Also my rooster is doing better now

I watched this video at 5 am this morning. Wonderful way to wake up with coffee. Very informative, interesting, and touching. I am doing my first hatch right now and one of my hens went broody for the first time. 3 of the eggs I had shipped were put under her. I so appreciate the inclusion of the embryology charts from Brinsea. Your interaction with your daughter is so precious.

How important is it to take out the eggs that aren't developing or stopped? I'd hate to mistake a good developing egg and take it out. Great video btw! Very informative 👏
@HeadFamilyFarm Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The main reason to take eggs out is to avoid spoiled eggs accidentally breaking in the incubator. This can cause a stinky mess, and every now and then can lead to infections for the other chicks. It isn't super important to take them out. Typically at the two week mark we will take out eggs that don't show development. By that point it is pretty obvious and you won't run the risk of throwing out good eggs. Thanks for being here with us!

Great video, it was super informative. I’m going to be hatching my own chicks soon. I have a question for you. Can chicks that are a couple weeks older be put together to brood with younger chicks? I’ve got some day old chicks arriving a couple of weeks before my eggs will hatch, and want to know if I can eventually integrate them together. Once the younger ones are feathered and such to brood together. I hope that makes sense. 😅
@HeadFamilyFarm Жыл бұрын
It depends on the chick’s honestly. Sometimes it’s an easy integration and sometimes you have to re-separate. If they’re no more than a week or 2 apart and similar in size it typically goes ok. They will act as 2 separate flocks with their own pecking order, which is why it can be harder to integrate.

hey i was wondering whats the best position to hatch shipped eggs? horizontal or vertical, and if so does it make any difference?
@HeadFamilyFarm9 ай бұрын
I can only speak from our experience and having read blogs/comments/forum posts and watched videos about other people’s experiences, so this isn’t definite truth. We have had the most success hatching shipped eggs in incubators that hold the eggs pointy end down and tilts them from side to side rather than turning them. We have had some decent success with using Nurture Rights as well with shipped eggs. We typically will let shipped eggs rest for around 24 hours in an egg carton pointy end down (in hopes of allowing the air pockets to settle on the other end). Then if we are using our cabinet incubator that holds the eggs up and down we will go ahead and put them straight in as any other egg. If we are using our Nurture Right (lays them on their side) we will put the whole egg carton (we have a couple we’ve cut in half to fit in the incubator) into the incubator for 24 hours. Then we quickly take the eggs out, place the turning mechanism in, and lay the eggs down in the incubator. I don’t have any hard evidence that this method is more effective (shipped eggs really are a gamble and the outcome depends greatly upon the individual box’s journey through the post, so it’s impossible to tell what works best on the hatchet’s end), but it makes me feel a little better about putting them on their sides after they are shipped.

Did you add the rubber mat under the tray? Ours just has the plastic floor in it.

We use the foam shelf liner with holes in it and cut it to size. The floor is really fine but if you’re hatching bantams sometimes their feet can go through.

Hey there, I was wondering, once the chicks hatch, what temp and humidity does the incubator have to be in for them to be comfortable in there ?
@HeadFamilyFarm9 ай бұрын
As long as it’s between 95 and 105 degrees they will be fine. It’s best not to adjust the temperature. As far as humidity goes, it shouldn’t mess with the hatched chicks one way or another. We typically take the chicks out of the incubator after around 24 hours, even if we leave the incubator running longer.

Quick question, what do I do if I can see a chick struggling for over 10 hours? Do I intervene or wait it out?
@HeadFamilyFarm Жыл бұрын
That sounds like it might’ve been tough to watch. I’m sorry. There is a lot of mixed information out there on similar circumstances. There are tons of varying opinions as well. Some will say you should never intervene, whether it be because of a risk of “shrink wrapping” other chicks or because of other reasons surrounding timing of hatch or physical fitness of chicks. Some will say you should intervene immediately and that it takes a lot to shrink wrap chicks. In my personal opinion, animal husbandry of any kind is largely about your connection with the animals. We have helped countless chicks and ducklings over the years, and have also given space for a more natural process at different times. All this to say, I think you should make yourself aware of the risks and benefits and make a personal decision. If it were me, I would add a little humidity (spray some water in the incubator with a misting spray bottle) and possibly use tweezers to gently pip/zip the egg a bit more using the pip from the chick, but beyond that it would be a case by case decision based on how far out of the egg they’ve made it and what condition the chick appears to be in. Removing a chick before it is ready is a mistake we’ve made a few times and we don’t want to repeat that mistake. Hope this helps!

What do you do when incubating eggs and your power goes out, say in mid way or towards the end of 21 days incubation? We’ve had several storms and thank God power did not go out. But sooner or later that problem will arise.
@HeadFamilyFarm17 күн бұрын
It’s only happened a few time to us and no more than 2 hours. The incubator would have to be in a cold location for it to make a difference for just 2-4 hours. You can wrap in a thick blanket or 2 to help it hold heat. With my large cabinet incubators, I just leave them be.
