*_”Make Yourself” was the first burnt CD I ever listened to. A kid on the bus gave it to me to listen to over the weekend. He printed a custom label for it and everything. When I was 16, a girl that I liked printed all the lyrics from Hybrid Theory of LP by sneaking into his dad's office. To me it was magic in an age with no internet access, I had no printer or even computer. When she handed me the sheets, they smelled like her so I spend two weeks singing to this songs and remembering her. To this day, I know all the lyrics from that album.

This song got me through some of my darkest days, whether it be substance abuse, tackling attraction that wasn’t mutual, or the homelessness I went through, it strengthened my spirit. It made me feel that everything I was going through wasn’t for nothing, and that it’d lead to something better. Fast forward a few years, and I’ve got a good grasp on my emotions, I’ve become cleansed of substance abuse, and I’m no longer homeless. I pushed to survive, and I did just fine doing so. I feel that sometimes people just need a push in the right direction and that’s this was for me. Odd, because I never thought music could save people til it saved me. I hope that people out there struggling find your peace, your push to do better, and to never forget that there’s a light at the end of every tunnel.

A song about coming of age and the everlasting fear of death. A reflection of what we all know is inevitable, being a ripe age of 18 this song has a deeper meaning than most think. The idea of bursting among the flame is going beyond death. Whether you believe in god or not we all have our struggles and suffering. Times change and the world changes, whether you change with the times is up to you. The song is beautiful in every way possible.

Death comes to all of us. Worrying about a natural process is foolish. Accept that fact, but do know what you have done will affect the future. Were you a good parent? A good person? If God exists then this entity will sort us out for eternal life. If God doesn't exist then realize your choices, regardless of belief, in YOUR life affects future generations. We all matter while we live. Our actions or non-actions affect the future.

By the time I started watching MTV2 (remember when they played music there too?) and Fuse, Incubus was more popular and they only played their newer videos. 2024 and still going strong. Thank you to all the Gen X Dads who showed their millennial daughters good music like mine did. I was born in 93 and I was raised on 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s rock, and 2000/10s emo music and I refuse to listen to anything else. Music now has no meaning music then had all the meaning. Rock music is the only genre that has stayed consistent and I appreciate that. If rock music didn't exist I don't think I would be here today.

That's a neat and interesting take I had only figured out so many years ago that I was actually a millennial I guess you could consider me an elder millennial so I do feel like I was raised closer to the generation of Gen x, back then when this music was out I thought it was annoying stuff to gen xers but as I've grown older I've learned just how quickly time flies and how much of an illusion it really is enter always appreciate what I have cuz it is fleeting. Hallelujah to being 23 and thinking it was the end of the world, instead of it being more of the beginning. I loved Incubus starting in high-school. On my 23rd birthday I had a moment of emotion with this being one of the songs. I felt like it was the beginning of the end when in reality I was never truly happy until I was about 30. Really a league of it's own! It's also a very clever song that uses a lot of modulating mixture. At the moment he sings "An ominous landscape of never ending calamity" band goes from Ab minor mode (B5 chord) to Ab Locrian mode (Dsus2 chord), which is the darkest mode of them all, and it fits the lyric very well. Very cleverly done!

I remember seeing this video for the first time on The Box when I was 14. I had an extreme case of the the flu that literally took out my entire junior high including the teachers and even the principal and vice principal! I could barely walk, all I could do was eat soup and watch music videos, which is where I discovered some amazing bands like this one. The flu was that bad that they had to close, not enough substitutes but with the principal and vice principal gone...yeah, 3 day vacation if you can call it that. But omg the musical experience I had in those three days! Education to the max! I'm 33 now btw!
