For those wondering Wheel of Time was considered probably the biggest thing for High Fantasy after Tolkien, with George RR Martin ASOIAF basically only eclipsing it when the GOT TV show started it. It`s so cool seeing people coming back for WOT

I really liked George RR Martin with ASOIAF, but it isn't High Fantasy--it's a Renaissance-faire themed political drama

Yes, me too! But please, Robert, stay away from the show. If you haven’t already started watching, don’t. It is horribly disappointing. There are some very deep morals and issues in the books that the show neglects, ruins and even seemingly outright mocks. Many of the characters are completely misrepresented. The varied and unique characters that fans of the books love have all been turned into melodramatic husks. I love The Wheel of Time! My office was just a few hundred yards across campus from the office of Brandon Sanderson, the fellow who finished the series for Robert Jordan. Sanderson had quite the fan club there amongst the students.

I worked at a bookstore 25 years ago, it was my first job... I remember always seeing the WOT books and pondering whether or not to give them a try, as I loved the handful of Conan novels that Robert Jordan wrote. I never did though, and I just recently started watching the TV show just because... And now here I am, because I knew IDG would have videos on the subject... And I see myself picking up the books in the very near future.

I spend about half my fantasy-lore time in the Wheel of Time community, plus you're my favourite LOTR creator, so seeing you tackle these 4.5 million words of lore is super exciting. I hope you can continue! Free will in the Wheel of Time is a whole interesting debate. I think free will does exist, despite the pattern weaving as it will. The entire end of the book (being vague) suggests this. The pattern does push events towards people, and it 'knows' likely choices because it knows the people making the choice, but each person still does choose. Dark friends have chosen that path and it matters what people do for the outcome and their morality. But this topic is a whole debate!

There's also the point that, while ta'veren are largely subject to the whims of the Wheel, being nudged into fulfilling their destined roles, most people, while they can't change the course of history in any but the smallest details, are correspondingly more free to choose their own actions since, for example, who they marry isn't going to make a difference...
@dominicbarber3200

The illusion of choice... If you give a baby a choice between 2 similar toys, did you really give them a choice? On the other hand, did they think that they had one?
@questionsroxelane3643
@questionsroxelane3643 Жыл бұрын
Actually, the ta'veren exist precisely because of free will. They are made to "correct" the current "web of destiny" according to the design of the Pattern. From one turn of the Wheel, there might be differences small enough that they may look alike seen from far enough. Yet, looking at 2 turns very far apart, you might not recognize the similarities at all anymore. But those changes must be gradual enough, thus the existence of ta'veren to keep the Pattern on the right track every turning. If you want a very visual explanation for that and much more, look at the channel "Unraveling the Pattern", he's awesome!

This is perhaps semantic but if you delve deeper into thematic elements later it could be important; the difference in Saidin being a raging torrent to be mastered vs Saidar as massive; yet gentle, river that simply requires acceptance is important. It does NOT seem to be in any way related to the Dark One's taint. 5:10 in the video made me want to chime in. Love that you're covering my favorite here. Your Tolkein videos have always been exceptional!

I believe it's true to say Saidin was always like a raging torrent, independent of being tainted by the Dark One. Even when pure, it behaves in a similar way, part of RJ's gender dichotomy. Also Eamonns Field wasn't matriarchal, but had balanced forces of the Village Council and the Women's Circle (although arguable at times if the WC was the real power!). 😊
@mike2RR

Yeah, as RJ has it women guide their power, while men wrestle theirs into submission :) The man definitely had views on the difference between male and female character...
@Levacque
@Levacque Жыл бұрын
I got the impression that Emond's field held to egalitarianism after Aemon and his queen's example. The Councils and the Circles like to joke and spar, but I think deep down both recognize the essential services of the other groups (with the joke being that the women's circle almost always has the upper hand).
@JimCullen
@JimCullen Жыл бұрын
I'm glad someone already made this comment, because that was my understanding too. It's not 100% clear if Robert (of In Deep Geek-not Jordan) misunderstands this, or perhaps just communicated it poorly in so short a video. The difference between men wrestling with Saidin and women gently directing Saidar is just a microcosm of how Jordan portrays men and women in general. The Village Council vs the Women's Circle is much the same. The Council is technically in charge. They set the rules and enforce them, apart from "women's matters". And yet the Women's Circle is very effective at persuading the Council to do what they want.

There is at least one time when one of the boys says something to Mat about thinking if his father ever really did anything his mother truly didn’t want him to do as well. From what I read on Jordan’s blog this rather reflected his view of the proper relation between men and women. He basically says I do what my wife wants most of the time because mostly it is unimportant, but every few months I just do something completely contrary to keep her from growing contemptuous of me.

1.) Super happy you’re covering WoT now! Huzzah! 2.) I’d dispute your description of Saidin here. You say that unlike Saidar which is about surrender and nurturing, wielding Saidin is like a struggle and a fight, and that’s true. But you said the *reason* Saidin is a struggle is because of the Taint. It’s pretty clear in the books that Saidin is that way just because that’s how Saidin has always been-the nature of Saidin and Saidar more or less line up with the mythical traits associated with their respective genders. The Taint is (like you said) a nasty oil slick on top of the Saidin that you can’t help but get gooped up with, but Saidin itself being a struggle isn’t really anything to do with the Taint iirc.

Nitpick: while every book in the series officially begins with "The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend..." they all start with a prologue. In the case of the first book, the prologue shows the end of Lew Therin Telamon, Lord of the Morning, the Dragon, before beginning chapter one with the wind blowing into the Two Rivers...

I was wondering if you'd ever get around to covering the Wheel of Time, glad to see you take up the banner! Minor corrections though: the Wheel of Time is a *fifteen* book series, including Book Zero, New Spring. Which happens to be my favorite book in the series. Also, Emmon's Field isn't Matriarchal specifically. Yes there's a Women's Circle, but the main governing body is the Village Council, which is all men. It's hinted that the two groups split duties, but the male POV of Eye of the World seems to think the village council has higher authority.

I have read up to the third book. What I like about the books is the complexity of the world. It was a tapestry of interests and ideologies like with the Dark Friends hiring worldwide and the Children of the Light being religious extremes who think they are doing the right thing. I have watched some of Civilization Ex's versions which explore the lore of popular fantasy and sci-fi stories and I do like the idea that the world was once more scientifically advanced but has regressed. By the second book, the series introduces ideas of multiple universes. I also like that WoT is more ground-level compared to ASOIAF (which I love), since George R. R. Martin's work was more focused on powerful nobles.

But I haven’t revisited the series since it concluded. I liked the first season of the show even though it had some major flaws, but they also made some fascinating choices. I’m very curious to hear your take on all of it.

Stumbled on your channel by accident - some random LotR topic - and was glad to find a WoT video, if even just one. Would LOVE to see more of it, though, as it is an amazing work of fiction and by far my personal favorite among those you've covered, with TONS of areas for deeper exploration, even among those of us who've read the books.

would love to get more content on the wheel of time! ive read the books and seen both seasons of the show so far, but there is so much there and its been long enough since i read the books, it would be wonderful to get some content on the differences between the two. or even really just more about this wonderful series in general, in your normal style, character dives, power levels etc.

That was a great introduction! I binged through the books two years ago (thanks to the magic of audiobooks it only took me a few months :) ) but now only remember the bare bones of the lore. (Enough to not be very happy with the Amazon show though :/ TBH the second season I stopped watching after the 2nd episode simply out of boredom. It simply doesn't even have a quarter of the oomph that the books have! )

I can never forgive Amazon for what they have done to this amazing rich story the point i finally gave up was s2 realizing how absolutely insufferable they have written Moriane... I still love the books and will probly start another relisten soon it happens a few times a year. I just cant handle anything done by amazon. I even overlooked the "boy or girl" crap from season one and kept an open mind as long as i could but by the time the "sister" showed up in season 2 i had my fill of rewriting something i feel so passionately about. I hadnt ever gotten into reading before watching things like Lord of the Rings so i was not seeing any issues back then (original trilegy) sometime mid 00s i started really getting into reason and yeah my mid 20s i was and still am obsessed with Harry Potter i was offically a reader after starting WoT. I had such high hopes for a movie or show but what we got was just absolute crap.

More wheel of time please. Read the first four lengthy books back in late 1990/2000 but lost track after that.

Thank you. I definitely needed this recap for season 2. I may tackle the books eventually but the amount of them is a bit intimidating.

You really don’t. Show already broke several core principles of WoT story, and it won’t get better or closer to the books.

@@Alpha___00 That may be true but I still needed the recap to follow the plot of season 2 (regardless of the changes from the source material).
