The 4th of July is on its way so Tony and Newt decided to watch the 1996 classic, Independence Day. In this Podcast / Movie Review Tony and Newt will talk about the things that make Independence Day cool! Like the miniature cities they built and destroyed, the unique alien design, and the most patriotic speech ever put to film!
On July 2nd, communications systems worldwide are sent into chaos by a strange atmospheric interference. It is soon learned by the military that a number of enormous objects are on a collision course with Earth. At first thought to be meteors, they are later revealed to be gigantic spacecraft, piloted by a mysterious alien species. After attempts to communicate with the aliens go nowhere, David Levinson, an ex-scientist turned cable technician, discovers that the aliens are going to attack major points around the globe in less than a day. On July 3rd, the aliens all but obliterate New York, Los Angeles and Washington, as well as Paris, London, Houston and Moscow. The survivors set out in convoys towards Area 51, a strange government testing ground where it is rumored the military has a captured alien spacecraft of their own. The survivors devise a plan to fight back against the enslaving aliens, and July 4th becomes the day humanity will fight for its freedom. July 4th is their Independence Day...

This channel is healthy. The spin off of rental reviews with the old set was a very good albeit no Brainer idea. I've noticed there are consistently over a 1k simultaneous viewers for the live streams once they get rolling. For a channel with 36k subs and counting, those have to be encouraging numbers.

@@robk.6591 right, as someone who had the Mars Attacks and Dinosaurs attack cards as a kid it was awesome seeing the art on the cards brought to life. plus it felt like a more polished version of the 50's alien B-Movies it was paying homage to. I actually did get more entertainment from Mars Attacks than I did from Independence Day. It would be kinda cool if someone could Mars Attacks in black and white at a drive-in theater, the black and white color would compliment the special effects and give some scenes a creepier vibe. This flick doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Spielberg’s War of the Worlds is pretty damn good. I like Man of Steel fine enough but it’s bizarre to hear Newt, who enjoys that film, complain about on the nose 9/11 parallels. Art always reflects the horrors of the time. Why do you think every New Hollywood movie in the 70’s had such a cynicism to them with alienated flawed protagonists after the Manson murders in 69 shattered the free love optimism of the hippies. Also just look at how many Vietnam films came out. The problem now with inserting real world parallels in major Hollywood films is it always feels so insincere, like it was a decision made in a board room by executives and not an honest artistic choice by an individual.

Nice. Was in time for Canada Day. Man I was 11 when I saw this. Saw this with my Uncle, Pops and somehow my Grandmother as my Aunt was sick that night. I saw Stargate in 1994 so I was kinda pumped. Commercials pumped this sucker up. I remember getting kirby's block ball (since I loved playing arkanoid before my piano lessons in the waiting section, get this baller take on arkanoid only 3 dollars on eshop) while we were traveling in the USA that year and seeing a crazy standup alien from the film in a collectors shop in the same mall that I got that gameboy game.

I missed out on seeing it in theaters when it came out. I had seen it multiple times on video and on TV, but I wondered how the theatrical experience was. Back in 2016 when the second film was coming out, I figured that I make up for it by seeing a double feature on the two films. I am glad that I experienced the first film in theaters even 20 years later. The second film, well, that's a different story.

I maybe crazy but I would have sworn I heard the song "It's the end of the world" by R.E.M watching this in the movie theatre. When I rewatched it 20 years later on HBO, the song was taken out. They did not have rights to play it? Or maybe it was in the commercials.
