Why put oxygen absorber in the bag? #1, rice are natural absorbers. #2, drill a small hole in the lid and use your vacuum pump to pump the air out of the bucket and then quickly place a piece of gorilla tape across the hole. Works quitet well. Just pull off the tape and then unscrew the top. Reseal when done with a new piece of tape.

The five gallon buckets and GAMMA lids are the best thing since sliced bread, if you ask me lol. Im curious, where do you order your GAMMA lids through? I was paying (like a fool) amazon about $11-$20 for the colored lids, til I found them at Menards for just shy of $7! Unfortunately, it appears they're becoming harder to find these days. Which is good though, means more people are getting on board with being more self sufficient!

The gamma lids are already airtight, right? So why do people do the mylar bags also?

Yes, Gamma lids are airtight. However, to be properly stored for long term use, the mylar provides an impermeable oxygen barrier. This with the O2 absorber, creates an environment that is nitrogen rich and keeps bugs and mold at bay. Just the Gamma lids will not prolong the self life of rice and grains to the 20+ years we are looking for. If you just want a place to store your grains for short term, then a bucket and lid are all you need.

Buckets degraded over time and are not considered an oxygen barrier. The cost of a mylar bag, $.40-.50, is a good insurance policy for food security.

If you are not using oxygen absorbers, any grain, pasta, or legume will benefit from freezing. This will kill any spores, eggs, or bugs present.

Most dry goods will be edible for 15-20 years as long as it is quality food/grains and properly packed.
