This underwater rail tunnel is an engineering marvel. An ode to the engineering skills of Kolkata Metro and Indian Railways. In 1990, during my first visit to Calcutta (as it was then called), I had traveled in Metro. This was the only city with metro rail facility at that time. The immaculately clean underground metro was in stark contrast with the dirt and grime outside. Long back, when I visited Dubai, I had passed through a underwater road, which based under the Dubai Creek. India's engineering skill is indigenous, not imported as in the case of Dubai.

We, those who commute daily 2 times through HOWRAH Railway station, have been waiting for this day since the foundation stone was laid in 2009 by UPA & Left Front Govt . In the year of 2006 the under water metro was under construction and this plan was of left govt. Separately Kolkata metro railway corp , owned by Bengal govt and IND railways , was established. But due to some reasons then gov was unable to finance the project and withdrew. In the year 2010 , mamata Banerjee was the rail minister , then she (with ind railways) bought the remaining share of Kolkata metro. That's why Kolkata metro is the 17th zone of Indian railways ( only metro operated by Indian railways).

Great news but doesn't the existing network of Chennai Metro already have a part of its lines running under the Adyar RIver? So doesn't this make Chennai Metro India's first underwater metro, since this has been in operation since I think 2015 or 2017?
