My dream is to bring a huge crew of construction workers and plumbers over there and build the world's largest western style bathroom. Real plumbing and electricity not what they have now. Then the Indians themselves would be paid the equivalent of 12.00 American dollars an hour to clean and take care of it. (That's a huge wage for the money they have now.) Then a richer Indian who learned how to be a plumber would be bussed in and paid 20.00 dollars an hour. Not only would it eliminate a lot of water born diseases, but it would give them a comfortable living, maybe enough to improve their economy.

You want to see poverty alleviated by giving wealth to the poor without any condition? Read about how the Zimbabwe govt. printed more currency notes to pump in more money for the country and it's people and instead brought the downfall of their economy with inflation and all that. See money should not be given, it has to be earned. How to alleviate poverty? Step 1: Create wealth. Wealth that grows with time. In other words sustainable wealth. Step 2: Create opportunities. The people should be given the opportunity to earn a part of the wealth that was created in step 1. This can be done by providing education and imparting skills. Step 3: Leave it to the people to see how things work. If you've heard of Darwin's 'survival of the fittest' theory, you know there is always a chance of some people always ending up at the bottom. It's a competition and somebody has to come last. Then, when there would be a significant amount of wealth and majority of wealthy people, some amount of money can be donated without condition only to the needy who are really not capable of earning on their own. My dad worked in New Deli for 3 years. He said it was the worst time of his life. In the Chinese embassy in New Deli, there would be around 7 hours a day without electeicity and they had to use Diesel Engines. In Old Deli, No toilet for women, Men toilet is just 3 walls. He told me to never go to India no matter what. All these happened 10 years ago, I want 2 visit India, hopefully things have changed.

I visited India and I think proverty is a major issue a long with the caste systems...If Social services and the government will partnership with other countries to help build up India this will be a powerhouse country and provide every one with a free education including college and even free healthcare and free training for those who want to go into the public service and education and public sector careers....But ultimately India is a very beautiful country and the people are really friendly

Though poverty is still rampant in India, I think the country has seen a lot of positive growth as well, not just economically but with respect to the mentality and perspectives of the people. There are people in India who care about ending poverty and they are not just NGOs, they are Indian citizens and that right there is remarkable because it means they view it as a problem that should and can be solved. and they are willing to address it.

Not tryin to bash their religion but I think this problem is rooted in Hinduism. Fact is Hindu are born in a certain caste and they are expected to be in that castr for their rest of their lives. Poor people in india are from generations of poor ,unlike in other countries where everyonr has an equal chance of uplifting themselves. A doctors child in idia is expected to be a doctor too or some other white collar professional, just as a rat catcher or a prostitues child is expected to be a ratc catcher or a prostitue. In addition to the caste being in place, the lowest caste which are called "the untouchables"scarely gets a chance at education and as such they will continue procreating at an alarming rate as they arnt thought about proper contraceptives. It is in these later years that some upper class or ",brahmins" are behinning to look out and help up their stuggling people. Hopefully one day everyonr will have an equal shot at life

I am hindu living in Bali, Indonesia. People don't care anymore about caste since I was a child. Many people with higher caste live a poor live. What matter most is whether or not you live a good life, your achievements, your contribution to the society where you live, your social skills, and ofcourse if you have more money that will place you in a spot light. When the British left us 90% were poor . Before the British arrived India was the second richest country in the world behind China . Before the Muslims came , India was the richest. After the British left in 1947 , we have curbed the poverty down to 15% . While it is a big number, I believe with the spread of faster connectivity it will come down tremendously within the next 10 years. Around 9% growth per year for the next 10 years will eliminate poverty and once that is settled , then the world will see an unprecedented middle class youth and India will be the largest consumer market in the world . If we grow around 8% percent it would take 15 years. The thing is , more we grow and with smart policies like crop insurance and lowering of medical cost will help reduce the poverty in an exponential manner and the more the economy grows , the faster the government and spend on the poor. I hope by 2022, we would provide Housing for all . That would be an incredible milestone. When the population is so big , there will be more rich people and there would be more poor people and the divide will also be more.

dushyantx You my friend need to understand how economics and money works. You want to see poverty alleviated by giving wealth to the poor without any condition? That would be an insult of money. Read about how the Zimbabwe govt. printed more currency notes to pump in more money for the country and it's people and instead brought the downfall of their economy with inflation and all that. See money should not be given, it has to be earned. What the govt. should do is to create more job opportunities, ensure everyone gets proper training and education for the created job opportunities. This is easier said than done in a country of 1.2 billion people and when the world economic situation took a hit after recession. Fortunately India wasn't hit that badly and it would be interesting to see, given the current economic projections, how the economy shapes up in the next 20 years.
