None of them had the good sense to at least mention Murali Vijay for the Test opening position. Not that he should be in the XI as such, although if you are picking a specialist Test opener, he should be the one to join Viru. I liked the idea of Kumble as captain, tho.

These guys are just too dumb with their analysis and short term memory. Opening the batting is a specialist job and you need Harbhajan in the line up as well who has been one of the biggest match winners for India this century. My XI will be - Sehwag Gambhir Dravid Sachin Kohli Dhoni (tempted to go with pant) Ashwin Harbhajan Kumble Zaheer Bumrah 12th man- Shami If it’s seaming conditions, just get shami in place of any of the spinner. Otherwise this team will score 600+ and bowl out any opposition twice within 3.5 days

To me, I genuinely hate picking a team by having players play in positions out of position. Dravid spent majority of his career at 3, Kohli played all his career at 4, and Laxman played most of his career in 5 or 6. So Kohli doesn’t make it in my team. Laxman plays at 5, Dravid at 3, and Rohit as opener. Bowling and Wk is fine.

Agreed that the case for Vijay opening should've been spoken about a bit more, but the team selected is easily the best one. As for those suggesting Pujara should be playing, there's not one batsman in this lineup he can replace , not to mention his very poor record in SEN countries .

Shami walks in any Indian XI as first choice. Dravid over Gambhir or Vijay as opener? Also, Kumble was past his prime. He is India's best ever number 3! Here's my XI: Sehwag,M Vijay, Dravid, Sachin, Laxman, Pant, Jadeja, Ashwin, Shami, Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar. Bumrah and Bhuvi open the bowming, taking a few quick wickets. Shami comes and keeps the pressure. Ashwin and Jadeja do there magic. Elegant Vijay plays swing well and sehwag whacks. Dravid steadies the innings as he supports sachin. Laxman and Pant save the day.

@@upabovealways at no 4 yes but SRT with 56 avg 16000 runs but kohli has avg 49 at 8900 runs vis-a-vis SRT not at no 5, at no 5 Lara/ABD/Laxman makes the cut VVS has a tons in SENA as well and more in winning cause and double ton at Eden Gardens no one's playing that 281in 2nd innings day 4 pitch to bail out a lost match to winning one against that Supreme Aussies side , 7 double tons none in 2nd innings most important for a no 5 batsman. Laxman is amongst top 5/6 batsman at no 5, which included Lara/ABD amongst others. Just because you are great at no 4 doesn't mean you are great at no 5, if not for SRT Kohli was an automatic selection. No 3 is still open for him now as well No 3 is easier for No 4 than No 5. No rules but people who have played the game they know it . Why ain't steve smith batting at 5/6 then? 4-1 = 3 , 4+1 = 5 what logic hence a no 4 can play at 3 or 5. Test isnt ODI. Not denying the fact Kohli is the greatest White ball batsman at no 3 ever to play cricket no one is even close( 59 avg with 13000+ runs) and I respect him.
