Stalin K.’s award-winning feature-length documentary is perhaps the most comprehensive look at untouchability ever undertaken on film. The powerful stories and shocking visuals in this film makes it impossible for anyone to deny that Untouchability is still practiced in India today. Director Stalin K. and his team spent four years traveling the length and breadth of India to bear witness to the continued exclusion and segregation of those considered as 'Untouchables' .
The film introduces leading Benares scholars who interpret Hindu scriptures to mean that Dalits 'have no right' to education, and Rajput farmers who proudly proclaim that the police must seek their permission before pursuing cases of atrocities on Dalits. The film captures many 'firsts-on-film, ' such as Dalits being forced to dismount from their cycles and remove their shoes when in the upper caste part of the village.
It exposes the continuation of caste practices and Untouchability in Sikhism, Christianity and Islam, amongst the Communists in Kerala and within some of India's most revered academic and professional institutions.
In an age where the media projects only one image of a 'rising' or 'poised' India, this film reminds us how far the country is from being an equal society. Traveling through eight states and four religions, this film is perhaps the deepest exploration of caste oppression ever undertaken on film.
Stalin K is a human rights activist and award-winning documentary filmmaker and the director of Video Volunteers, the Co-Founder of DRISHTI- Media, Arts and Human Rights and the President of the Community Radio Forum-India. He is a renowned public speaker and has lectured or taught at over 50 institutions ranging from the National Institute of Design and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in India, to New York University and Stanford and Berkeley in the US.
INDIA UNTOUCHED is Stalin's second film on the issue of caste -- his earlier film 'Lesser Humans', on manual scavenging, won the Silver Conch at the Mumbai International Film Festival and the Excellence Award at Earth Vision Film Festival, Tokyo, and helped to bring international attention to the issue of caste. He also leads the Article 17 Anti-Untouchability campaign in Video Volunteers through which Community Correspondents are documenting hundreds of instances of untouchability and caste conflict, some of which have formed the basis for a Public Interest Litigation in the Indian Supreme Court, filed with the Human Rights Law Network.

@@kiran..2814 Birth Based Caste is a superstitious system, however Varna was the original system, in Varna there was no upper or lower, people chose the work of which they are qualified for and according to Bhagavad Gita, anyone can be a Brahman (Teacher), Shatriya (Warrior), Vaishya (Trader), Shudra (Labor) based on knowledge and skills: 🔹In Bhagavad Gita 4:13, Krishna says that he created different Varnas (Profession) on the basis of one's Karma (Activity) and Guna (Quality). 🔹Bhagavad Gita 5:18 "The truly learned, with the eyes of divine knowledge, see with equal vision a Brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater" 🔹Bhagavad Gita 9:29 "I am equally disposed to all living entities: there is neither friend nor foe to Me: but those who with living sentiments render divotional service unto Me, such persons are in Me and I am in them." 🔹Bhagavad Gita 18:41 "The duties of the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are distributed in accordance with their guṇas (quality) and not by birth. Caste is a Spanish and Portuguese word 'casta' which stands for 'Breed' or 'lineage'. During earlier times Caste use to be Varna (Profession) and based on merit and not by birth, I can give you instances from the ancient times, where a so-called modern day "lower caste" moved to "upper caste", e.g. Guru Valmiki, Kabir Das was from a shudra family but became a brahmin based on merit, etc and btw Ravana was himself a Brahmin knowledgeable person from Northern India but because of his notorious activities he got punished by Rama (believed to be an OBC if we abide by caste categorization). Lastly, you have to understand the British/European motive behind imposing caste: The Caucasians (Europeans) created Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda, Africa, to divide and control the native population, and for this reason, the Rwanda Genocide occurred. The same attempts and inequalities Europeans also tried to create amongst Indians by separating Northern India and Southern India into "Aryans" VS "Dravidians" and further dividing Hinduism into 3,000 castes and 25,000 sub-castes. And also read about Herbert Hope Risley who created casteism, racism in Indian society by one's facial features and skin color, and Bishop Robert Caldwell who propagated the "Aryan Invasion" in Southern India to convert "Dravidians" into Christianity.

Thank you for your wonderful video. Literally I cried after watched this. I don't know my brothers and sisters who were from untouchables facing this kind of stupid. In my childhood also, I experienced some situation of caste discrimination. But the scenes showed here was brutal and unexplainable. I am showing gratitude towards the people who were trying to expose these situations in society.

I can't tell you how touched I am by this documentary. It is one of the best tear jerking documentaries I have ever watched. It is incredible that in today's world, there are still people who believe that the accident of birth confers on them some special privileges that makes them feel superior to other humans. Moreso, it is shameful that no religion has succeeded in breaking this obnoxious taboo. The question I am left with is - how does one get rid of this nonsense? What can one do to help the people of India?

The likes of the hindu priest who keep quoting from MANUSMRUTI should be publicly tried and punished. The punishment should be substantial to make others refrain from making such remarks and practice untouchability. education is very important for the upliftment of the downtrodden and i think there should be social watch organizations to ensure the police, panchayats etc encourage the continuation of such brutality

Thank you Siddhartha. People do need repeated reminding of the status of the society of its darkest sides. Some highly venerated Religious leaders from the beginning, some scriptures and several reformists worked against this disease. It is probably rectified by education and economic upliftment of the unfortunate. There are other subjects that need similar treatment: the male attitude towards woman; treatment meted out to the transgenders; religious persecution of Jews for over two thousand years across the globe without ever regretting, apologizing and making amends to mention but a few. Thanks again for your great effort.

lmao, casteism was introduced by a white man to ruin indian society, the origins of this system were very simple and not discriminatory at all but the colonizers had twisted it into their own perverted fantasy. sri Siddhartha Chabukswar Sir you did a wonderful job. I have seen all the 4 parts in one go. Lot of balance is there in the presentation, it is a reflection of our society - irrespective of religion/caste. Again, we expect higher neutrality from upper castes and so on. But I believe thoughts come from our own wisdom and equanimity but not from caste or religion or even region to which one belong, let us segregate each from the other(thought and caste etc). We have to have a humane approach towards everybody, then we may be able to guide next generation. It is important that more and more people should get into this path and away from skewed thinking, thanks.

RedoranGuard-SkyrimBattles ? atlas shrugged was not about separating people into casts, in fact it's premise is the exact opposite, it was about how humans should interact and that their interaction should not be about casts but about placing value on a person based on what they set their minds to do and accomplish. “The only proper purpose of a government is to protect man's rights, which means: to protect him from physical violence. A proper government is only a policeman, acting as an agent of man's self-defense, and, as such, may resort to force only against those who start the use of force. The only proper functions of a government are: the police, to protect you from criminals; the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect your property and contracts from breaches or fraud by the others, to settle disputes by rational rules, according to objective law. But a government that initiates the employment of force against men who had forced no one, the employment of armed compulsion against disarmed victims, is a nightmare infernal machine designed to annihilate morality: such a government reverses its only moral purpose and switches from the role of protector to the role of man's deadliest enemy, from the role of of policeman to the role of a criminal vested with the right to the wielding of violence against the victims deprived of the right of self-defense. Such a government substitutes for morality the following rule of social conduct: you may do whatever you please to your neighbor, provided your gang is bigger than his.” “There's nothing of any importance in life - except how well you do your work. Nothing. Only that. Whatever else you are, will come from that. It's the only measure of human value. All the codes of ethics they'll try to ram down your throat are just so much paper money put out by swindlers to fleece people of their virtues. The code of competence is the only system of morality that's on a gold standard.”

I was also saddened to see those who call themselves Christian doing such evil, but I also know that many people call themselves Christian and then go about living unkind lives because they truly do not love and follow Christ. Also, there are Christians who do not take their faith seriously enough to really learn what God requires of you - love Your God first with all your soul, mind, and body and love your neighbor as you do yourself because no man really hates himself. Jesus said that following those two laws will cover everything and He is right. There's no way that humans can fulfill the Ten Commandments, it's not possible, but if you truly do your very best, with God's help, to live those two laws, you'll also be fulfilling the Commandments. The other thing that I realized is that they (leaders in India) have made Christians to be a caste, a high caste, for a very evil purpose which I'll try to explain clearly. Missionaries have always been happy when caring for those who have been abused by caste systems to see them learn that they are equal to everyone else in God's eyes. In India it's the Hindu gods who insist upon the caste system, so the Dalits are surprised and happy to find that Jesus values each person the same as the next and all are loved equally. So, I can see where making Christianity a part of the caste system will also protect the Hindu religion because the Dalits can be convinced that they cannot even become Christians - not anything to do with accepting Christ as their savior, but because they cannot aspire to a higher caste! No human being is without sin and evil, even Christians, but the difference with Christians is that they will be forgiven when they recognize and turn away from that sin. That's why I can't believe these so-called high caste Christians (landlords) are truly Christian. If they had started out approving in the caste system and then become Christians, you might see them continue for a short time, but it won't take long for them to be informed of the evil they are involved in, yet these high caste so-called Christians don't repent and turn away from that sin. It's probably been very effective in India in keeping the Dalits in the Hindu religion instead of embracing a God who loves them equally.

Being one of the lowest of lows of India: So much power advantage, so much vacuum left by avoidance and indifference! In my opinion, India's untouchables have nothing to worry about status quo or future. Why? No matter how you look at it, it's our forefathers-their toil sweat blood and tears, it took labor to create what now you see is India and yes, to transcend this world. Never forget reminiscence our forefathers. So much diverse we are, opposites are always interconnected and inseparables. In modern India, I strongly believe untouchables being benefited in the long run. Feeling low or down because your caste? Don't please! Why? Be proud of your forefathers who (labor) created this world, yes I say this whole world. Their labor is tantamount to whatever you see and transfix your eyes to. Be educated in basic numeracy and literacy, automation, arts, and in just about everything in English. Our caste identity is very important for us, our cohesive strength and our visibility that will keep us together. Love you all!

Its sad to see such atrocities happen in our own backyards........the untouchability eradication should be strongly done in the grass root level and from an early age......i am very doubtful as to how people who are truly shunned from society are able to avail the government provided reservations the purpose of which is to enhance them, but is it really reaching them? do we need more stringent system or a different system which could be more effective?

No, it's a beautiful country, polluted rivers and streets aside, with many really good people. The thing that's screwed up is this issue of untouchability. You are just continuing another kind of prejudice that you're condemning an entire country for - start using the brain you were given and look at your prejudicial issues.

when the hindu holy books were written there were only 4 castes mentioned but they were only based on types of work done by the person, not based on ancestors or inheritance. todays caste system is was the corruption of the original system. after all in Krishna's time he was from a family of the low caste as he himself was a cow herder. but that was never looked down upon in those times. All four castes were important parts of the society. untouchable system is further corruption made worse or caused by the muslim invasion with their belief of impurity and untouchable status of all non muslims and further this system was codified by the british into set laws.

Birth Based Caste is a superstitious system, however Varna was the original system, in Varna there was no upper or lower, people chose the work of which they are qualified for and according to Bhagavad Gita, anyone can be a Brahman (Teacher), Shatriya (Warrior), Vaishya (Trader), Shudra (Labor) based on knowledge and skills: 🔹In Bhagavad Gita 4:13, Krishna says that he created different Varnas (Profession) on the basis of one's Karma (Activity) and Guna (Quality). And also read about Herbert Hope Risley who created casteism, racism in Indian society by one's facial features and skin color, and Bishop Robert Caldwell who propagated the "Aryan Invasion" in Southern India to convert "Dravidians" into Christianity.

jmort253 I'm very glad to hear that; I wouldn't want to judge all of America by the atrocities the south committed on black Americans in the 1960s, and wouldn't want to judge this country by the actions of a few stuck in an older, well-disposed-of age. I think of India as a country moving fast into the first world with a long, fascinating history behind it, but this film so depressed me. It's good to know that there's another side to the story.

David Williams I am often confused over this issue: I am Indian. I find people of two scheduled castes, both looked down by others, fight each other for supremacy- they do not eat together, drink water from the same well, they live on opposite sides of the same village...the castes in what you can call middle level, blame the "upper" castes but practice the same discrimination with those who are "lower"!!! Can we blame all whites- all of any one group? There is conditioned mind discriminating. Once we understand sincerely, things may be better.

There is no perfect answer here but one thing is for sure - law and order is everybody's right, not necessarily equality, equality is something to be earned but law and order must always prevail! Those who think they have a right to beat, kill, torture and rape MUST BE HANGED, PUBLICALLY to show people laws will be enforced. They do not enforce laws in India because they do not want to enforce laws in India, that is why they are not enforced, simple as that!
