With digitization increasing exponentially, semiconductors have become one of the most prized technologies in the world today. All electronic devices - big and small - contain semiconductor microchips, resulting in a worldwide race among countries to become the leader in semiconductor design and manufacturing. Historically, the U.S. has led in semiconductor technology, and with their support, today Taiwan is the biggest producer of semiconductors. But China has slowly been gaining ground, with reports that under Xi Jinping, the Chinese military is using semiconductors to develop AI weapon systems. As a result, America has banned the export of all semiconductor software and components to China, forcing companies like Apple to look for alternatives. In this video, we discuss why India is well-placed to benefit from these developments and replace China to become a leader in semiconductor technology.

Two clarifications: 1. We mentioned in the video that TSMC produces chips for Intel. Which is not correct as, it’s only a very recent phenomenon and it hasn’t always been the case. 2. We mentioned that TSMC gets innovation support from the US. That’s not completely true, as TSMC has its own R&D team. However, TSMC’s conception and evolution still owe a lot to America-trained engineers and researchers.

And within that time, the innovator will move still ahead.. thus we will still be lagging behind. And remember we are just a manufacturing hub.. Just where machine is placed to manufacture.. Not a designing or innovation hub. It's done in US, UK, foreign itself.. They are just piloting Polluting our country by not manufacturing in their country more in the name creating jobs. How pollution and dead the Beijing situation. Air , water has become.. same will happen in India. India should Becoming designing hub also, not just manufacturing.. Otherwise it's just like an employee working under owner of shop & does just what owner says without knowledge exchange of important things.

I am currently pursuing my master's in engineering and in our 2nd year we're supposed to do research. As I am electronics engineer and really passionate about semiconductor fabrication, I really wanted to work on neuromorphic chips which mimics our brain architecture and I even spent 6-7 months on learning everything and creating prototypes of these chips on a simulation software but then I was forced to switch to some another topic because my professors told me that there is not a single facility in India which can actually fabricate this chip. Most of the electronics engineers in India do IT jobs due to lack of core companies and rest goes to other countries for core jobs, I have read research papers of foreign institutions getting global recognitions having Indian author's name. To be honest, Indians can make advanced chips if we are provided with infrastructure and proper education.

Hi Mohak, Great informative video. Being associated with this semiconductor industry for quite few years, would like to add: - lack of EDA tools in china: this is not going to stay true for longer, as there is a Chinese company which is employing many engineers from different parts of world to develop these softwares for them [name: x-epic] - along with 24x7 electricity supply, one thing you missed including is, semiconductor chip manufacturing process requires uninterrupted supply of fresh water, 24x7. Tsmc has already been warned for it's huge water consumption. It's not an easy step to establish fab in India, but I really wish we should be on track soon, keeping our focus on manufacturing, packaging and designing of chips. It's an exciting and rapidly evolving industry. I would urge people to look out for this domain and contribute to it's development. Cheers!

If India continues the same path as others in this race , it will never beat china. India need an out of the box plan by its think tank and more investment in the r&d to tackle the shortcomings of this plan. As said by Rajan sir focusing on designing is a safe bet but its high time that India build its manufacturing sector as good as its services one. Not just this but a large number of our problems will be solved. It need to take a leap to atleast be a worthy participant. Hoping for the best.

We have example of GATI SHAKTI Yojana by ministry of road transport and highways to improve road-railway connectivity and development of ports to reduce shipping cost , time and resources and logistics costs and to build central portal to create coordination among various departments of ministries for quick implementation of plans and this will save tax payers money and will surely attract big companies to start large scale manufacturing in India. New Logistic policy will going to boom this . Exactly my point. People are complaining that most companies are going to Southeast Asian countries instead of India. Why will they come to India when we did not even have decent infrastructure for decades. We have started only now building and completing some of the most critical infrastructure projects, so it will take time.

No thats not the whole truth in some recent years intel is lacking on innovation for advanced technology like fabrication process (ex 14nm ,7nm,now 4nm) so for advanced manufacturing of their own designed processor there chips are manufactured by tsmc but intel is picking up the speed giving full throttle to tackle the situation. If want to know more or short summary there is a wall street journal's video of tech news briefing podcast you can watch that. And manufacturing is really complicated for ex: a manufacturing plant or a fab need 1-10billion dollar(not uncommon by tsms) 3-4 years and multimillion dollars utility equipment ex extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) photolithograpy machine is manufactured by only one company ASML and 1 machine cost 180 million dollars. Thank you soch for this video,it needs to give the reality for the production as well as innovation in technology in India.

14:30 "India should train its engineers to design and develop chips..." -- Raghuram Rajan This is what happens when an expert in one domain (Economics) steps outside his domain into another that he has NO idea about (VLSI design) and shoots his mouth off. 20% of the world's VLSI design engineers are Indian. Chip design history in India goes back almost as far as its software history: Texas Instruments setup the first design house in Bangalore before software was even a thing there!

The 2 steps involved in making a chip is 1. Design 2. Fabrication......3 types of main companies are there .... 1.Fabless(They do only design of their chips) e.g- apple, nvidia, amd, qualcomm 2. Foundries- (only manufacture/ fabricate others chip) e.g Tsmc, global foundry, umc 3. IDM- (Integrated Device manufacturers)-> does both design and fabrication as they have their own plants e.g INTEL,Samsung, Texas Instruments, Micron technology So Mohak you made a slight mistake in the video by telling TSMC is manufactures Intels chips. Tsmc manufacturers apple nvidia chips but intel chips are manufactured by their own foundry

I wish you had talked more about ASML - the company which actually makes all of the world's semiconductor fabrication equipment (the machine which actually makes the chips). TSMC also gets its equipment from ASML. And the US is banning ASML to sell their most advanced equipment to China. So China can't set up a fab of its own parallel to TSMC.

Chinese SMEE is supposed to deliver 28nm indegenous lithography machine by 2023 which is equivalent to ASML's DUV ie one generation below EUV. They are slowly and steadily getting there to make completely indegenous supply chain fr semiconductors . Within 2 years SMIC would be able to tape out 14nm and below using indegenous equipment.

@@cb9461 Indian are overconfident bro. They don't know about china but boast like india will become china by next decade. China have been in semiconductor since last 2 decades and they are also making tools from design to semiconductor manufacturing tools. They would have leapfrogged tsmc too if USA haven't sanctioned smic for purchasing EUV lithography and almost all semiconductor industry are now under heavier sanction. If china come out from it then they would have entire supply chain in china alone
