Another alternative source of fuel is being developed by Porche somewhere in North America... Synthetic fuel - called eFuel by Porsche - is created by splitting water into oxygen and green hydrogen, then combining CO2 with the green hydrogen to produce synthetic Methanol, which is then converted into e-fuel, which can be used in regular (ICE) combustion engines without any engine modifications. This can also be a game changer if the technology is in the right direction...

@bookishguru8708

It's not practical now because creating green hydrogen from water is the most expensive process. It determines price of hydrogen. And then you are converting it into methanol but whereas here you are just using using hydrogen no conversion needed. So Porsche only making a process tedious,complected and expensive

FCEVs can really bring a kind of a revolution in the automobile industry, if taken seriously. Sometimes, your video comes a bit late but better things need time and your oratory skill mixed with an excellent editing compell me to praise you, often. It's not just electric cars, the whole concept of our mobility needs to be revised. In cities we definitely need more micromobility like bicycles, scooters, e-bikes, ... More public transportation options would be also great. For example high speed trains between suitable city pairs. Btw if we transform whole transportation sector (including airplanes, cargoships etc - where we still DO NOT have CO2 free optins) we will reduce emissions around 12%...

@ICN As a car journalist, you focused on the technical problems to solve in Hydrogen cars. But, the real stopper with hydrogen cars is not inside the car. The problem is in the energy system required to produce green hydrogen, store and transport it. It takes 3-4 times more renewable energy if we use green hydrogen fuel cells vs batteries. Instead of wasting so much renewable electricity on making hydrogen for cars and then converting it back to electricity to run the car, we can directly store 1/4th the electricity in batteries for the same distance! Green hydrogen cars mean we will need to set up 3 to 4 times more renewable power production and transmission! Plus, the complex, expensive infrastructure of hydrogen storage and transport. Realistically speaking, a hydrogen car will be 8-10 times more expensive to run that a battery EV, even after hydrogen gets cheaper. The hydrogen engine is even worse because it is only half as efficient as fuel cells. Green hydrogen simply does not make sense in cars - either financially or in terms of energy use. Green hydrogen will be useful in many industries like chemicals and fertiliser where it will replace highly polluting grey hydrogen made from gas. I suspect Toyota is using hybrid and hydrogen propaganda to delay battery EVs, because they don't have the technology to compete today. 1. Toyota is buying time. Decades of investment in hydrogen car technology has failed to produce a commercially successful product. No return to show to shareholders against billions of spend. 2. The new CEO has announced a shift to EVs now, only after pressure from shareholders threatening to fire Mr. Toyoda from the board for his anti-EV stance. They are losing market share in lucrative segments and have extremely high debt. It is shocking to think but the world's biggest automaker could go bankrupt if it cannot quickly build a successful EV portfolio. 3. Toyota does not own a single dedicated EV manufacturing line anywhere in the world. Toyota engineers have admitted they are far behind EV companies like Tesla or BYD in EV design and manufacturing techniques. The value of Toyota's existing car and component making plants will need to be written off, because EVs demand completely different techniques. 4. Toyota have lobbied against EVs and even against improving fuel efficiency standards in internal combustion engine vehicles globally. They are behaving like an oil company, harming the planet. This is causing loss of brand reputation, as environmentally conscious consumers step away from buying Toyotas.

Hii Vikas sir, after watching this video there are some questions in my mind. 1. If H2 gas will be used in Internal Combustion Engines, didn't they it perform a reaction with oxygen and form water, when we compress the air fuel mixture in compression stroke. 2. Can H2 fuel be used as alternative fuel like a normal car can running on CNG and petrol both with any alterations in engine. 3. Why automobile brands are so concerned about the distributive infrastructure of H2 while we can about distribute it with the same way we are distributing CNG.

Over 12 minutes video and yet no mention of energy efficiency. Is this video a joke? Hydrogen ICE engines have more moving parts than FCEV plus a gear box. Thinking green hydrogen is ecofriendly? It requires treated fresh water which is scarce and water treatment itself is energy intensive process... And not to mention Electrolysis, compression, transportation, electricity synthesis are fundamentally energy inefficient hence more than half of energy input is wasted as heat. Why noone is bothered about much more promising fuels like 2nd and 3rd gen Biofuels? These can be used in our regular ICE vehicles and are carbon neutral

Following few questions on my mind: 1) What is total cost of ownership for a Hydrogen car vs EV (some Excel calculation for 50k running) 2) Why normal engines won't work for Hydrogen? What kind of modifications are needed to make it hydrogen compatible? 3) Sustainability aspects? Can Solar wind farms be converted to Hydrogen factories to store energy? I feel this is most important aspect of Hydrogen which makes renewables even more efficient 4) Other than Cars, hydrogen is being envisaged as replacement fuel for heavy transportation such as Ships and trains. Can hydrogen help replace diesel? But can high compression diesel engines work with highly volatile hydrogen? Your thoughts on all these aspects help us to understand total hydrogen story.

Any comparisons on the cost of producing hydrogen? Efficiency of the engine? Maintenance aspects of such combustion engines? Carbon fibre H2 tank, not kidding right? I am sure this can be a replacement tech for Diesel earth moving equipment and generators, but why not directly use electricity instead? Why create green hydrogen using green electricity and the produce combustion and burn only 47% of it to produce sound and motion and then say we didn't understand the long term emissions impact on earth? Just imagine whole earth turning humid with water vapour and unburnt hydrogen combining with carbon to form hydrocarbons.

Green hydrogen is produced using electrolysis of water which require electricity. Then it has to be transported by means of ships, trains, tankers etc. Then it has to be filled in cars and then burn inside the engine or use a fuel cell to convert back into energy or electricity to derive the vehicle. It is far more efficient to directly transfer the electricity used to produce the hydrogen over the transmission lines to charge the electric vehicle. Production of hydrogen is waste of energy. Transportation of it again requires more energy. Converting it back into electricity or burning is not efficient. Also, do anyone want to travel by sitting on a hydrogen bomb! Hydrogen has no advantage over battery electric.

Talking hydrogen for consumers is like talking about civilization in moon, technically possible yet technology is immature and expensive. BEV is available for consumers in most market in large quantity, while FCEV is very few, fuel is costlier than petrol and there is monopoly on tech.

Hydrogen might get popular in commercial applications as they have requirement for quick refuel and light weight, but most consumer dont have use for them. Even after 10 years, it will remain niche because its more complex. BEV was, is and always will be simpler to build, coz there is only 2 parts, motor and battery.

Nope, I focused on both the tech equally. Since hydrogen’s working principle isn’t known by most so had to focus on that. My pick, however, would be a hydrogen combustion engine filled with Green Hydrogen

Hydrogen IC engines could be a leap but the caveat is that Hydrogen takes a lot of space to store in an average car. Let's hope Toyota cracks this problem and we will hear engine sounds in the future.

A range of around 500km is already offered with 3-cylinder setup, and that according to us is a sweet spot considering the refueling time is hardly 5 minutes.

@@ICN I very hyped up for Hydrogen IC engines. But the packing of enough combustible fuel in an average car looks sketchy. There is a very informative video on KZbin regarding fuel storage capacity of a Hydrogen IC based car that shows, it needs to sacrifice all the rear and boot space to store hydrogen in the fuel tank of an average car. Because hydrogen takes a lot of space for its expansive property. So, storage is a huge issue right now.

After Dieselgate next is H2gate, unless someone can prove Hydrogen is safe to carry and millions of vehicles emitting water vapour and unburnt hydrogen is good for environment I can't trust Toyota. If Toyota only did 1% of the work towards EVs, world would be a better place. Now I know how Toytanic crashed, they refused to see the iCE berg, pun intended.😂
