The actual engineers of IAF are Airmen only. Engineering Officers mainly perform managerial functions.

In squadron maintenance and service of aircraft, in training school as instructor, in signal unit repairement and maintenance, in helicopter unit repairement and servicing. Totally hectic, and pressurized job untill your co ,Oic is good to you or else go to hell. No body cares for you and your future promotion are 1:100 means out of 100 only 1or 2 people get promotion. In each trade from sergeant to Jwo, wo or Mwo.

If a candidate has not cleared the EKT exam but cleared the AFCAT, and then SSB and Medicals to join as a Ground Duty(Non tech) cadet, then is there any chance (internal exam) to get the technical branch later on?

Basically the same but ground duty will have slightly lenient eye standards when compared to flying. Also flying branch candidates have to undergo additional measurements like sitting height leg length and 7 x-rays of the spine at various angles.
