This _Ray of Light_ album is definitely her most “Indian” influenced album. Many musical moments influenced by ragas and simple melodies of Indian classical music. She gave birth to her daughter Lourdes a few years prior, and she started ashtanga yoga afterwards, so that practice really shaped her musical influences here. Even her song “Shanti/Ashtangi” is entirely composed of the ashtanga yoga prayer “vunde gurunam charanaravinde…” something like that! But musically, the orchestra especially on “Frozen” is very Indian influenced. I love the entire record!

Great reaction. Madonna is a very versatile artist. During this Ray of Light Era, she drew inspiration from Asian culture, including India. Check out her song “Shanti/Ashanti”. She has a live version too !

Sadly during the live version, she butchered the accent horribly! Not sure why, or if it was on purpose or not. She says “sandarsita” as “sandarrrr sheetarrrr”. For effect…? 🤔 I love her but that made me go, huh? Haha

I love your input, especially your feedback on how many shoutouts Madonna gives to Indian culture, and especially Astanga Yoga, which Madonna practices. She's able to deliver both a very practical and spiritual message at the same time. Sadly, we don't have the power to melt the frozen hearts of other. Not even Madonna, the Sorceress.

Such an interesting video. Madonna is filmed in California's Mojave Desert - an antiphrasis of sorts to the nature of the song, dressed in a Gothic-style ball gown designed by Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens, her hands and wrists decorated in Mehndi with the Om symbol on one of her hands and seemingly playing the role of the Celtic triple goddess Brigid who is often represented as three separate entities whilst still being one being (maybe relating to the 3 stages of the female lifespan.) This Goddess is often connected to battlefields or desolate areas where lives have been lost and victories claimed. The video also associates Madonna's character with crows, maybe a nod to the Hindu goddess Shani and a large dog, possibly referring to the Greek Goddess Hecate. Madonna has also sited the film The English Patient as a further influence on the video. What it all means is anybody's guess, but that lady certainly draws from far and wide to inform her work and her medium. A stunning and complex music video from the Madonna. Great reaction. Thanks.

NOT Brigid!! The MORRIGAN. It could also be the Hekate or the Moiras. She represents the divine feminine, and 3 is also the number of Binah, the dark Mother of Kabbalah

It was really interesting to see you react to this one as it has Indian symbolism. She was using it quite a bit at this time, she has couple songs Shanti/Astangi and Cyberraga that are Indian inspired, and she's also included Indian themes in her live performances, even on MDNA tour. I remember some groups were upset she used the Indian symbolism during the Ray of Light era so that is why I find it interesting to see someone from that particular culture reacting to what she did. Times have changed so much. Many things that were perfectly okay that a lot of artists did decades ago would now be blasted online with claims of cultural appropriation. I think, as long as you do it respectfully, it's ok. At least it would be if someone used my culture as a reference point. But I am sure someone else feels another way and that is ok too. I just think we should be open-minded and embrace different cultures. After all we come from the same tree of life.

Meaning of Video Frozen (the video must be seen from its end towards its begining): 1 Madonna represents a gothic witch. She plays the part of Hecate, Godess Witch who represents the 3 forms or 3 faces of the Moon. 2 Frozen, in its video and its lyrics, talks about Lucifer's desperation of failing to capture human beings and lead them to his inferno. This is what this song is about. That's why it says: 'Give yourself to me' 3 Frozen Video is referring to a witch who goes to the desert to ask Satan for her illumination and to be lifted to a higher level. That's why she invokes Lucifer during the night. 4 She shows a black stone hanging from her neck: Saturn Stone, related to Capricorn Constellation, or Baphomet's. 5 She moves showing the sign of Mudra in her hands all the time, which represents the 666 sign or sign of Initiation. She does this to open a connection door with the pagan gods. 6 The 3 Madonnas represent a Triple Godess: Artemisa, Selene and Lilith, who is an important character in Ocultism or Esoterism. 7 Madonna levitates as the strength of the dark ritual grows. 8 As the door of hell opens, Satan, in the form of a dog, appears after Madonna's calling. 9 Madonna gives away her blood in the ritual. This is called 'Red Magic', in which blood is used to strengthen the power of the ritual. 10 Once the ritual is finished and the daylight comes, Madonna has already reached the illumination.

This is from her album "Ray of Light", her most spiritual album. She was studying Hinduism at that time, so the whole album is very inspired by that and also by Buddhism, Islam and Kabbalah. And she practiced Ashtanga Yoga for many years. She's a very good yogi. She also sang a song in Sanscrit called "Shanti/Ashtangi", you should react to the live perfoemance!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joC1loapYs-Jh5I
